He believed that leaders should balance the behavior needs of task, team, and the individual within a diagram he created and the center of that diagram was the best approach to balancing those needs. Inspires a Shared Vision An effective project leader is often described as having a vision of where to go and the ability to articulate it. Visionaries thrive on change and being able to draw new boundaries. It was once said that a leader is someone who "lifts us up, gives us a reason for being and gives the vision and spirit to change." Visionary leaders enable people to feel they have a real stake in the project. They empower people to experience the vision on their own. Title your posting: “your name - Leadership Assignment” b. Briefly describe the individual (you don’t have to use their real name) c. Describe the characteristics that you feel make this person an excellent leader. d. Describe one way in which you would like to make yourself a better leader. Over the years I have encountered many effective leaders. In my last position as a medical intern, I had the pleasure of working with a man by the name of Dr. Wesley Wilborn. Dr. Wilborn, a very well known and respected man in his field, has been a dermatologist for more than 30 years. His knowledge far surpasses much of that in textbooks as it relates to his field, and some of his knowledge can be found in the books and articles that he has created as well as on his website which promotes his product line DPL. That which makes him a great leader is that although he is very knowledgeable, he did not make any of his staff, including the interns and medical students feel less than sufficient when they were unaware of a diagnosis. Instead he manipulated our minds through various questions that helped us derive our own answers. Many times people assume that a leader only leads. It is in my opinion that an effective leader not only leads, but teaches along the...

...Am I a leader or a follower? That is the question. A leader must be a well rooted individual full of values and who will have the ability to respect the talents of others and are able to accept contribution from other human beings. A leader cannot be intimidating or manipulating. A leader must look within them-selves and find a way to influence other. A leader must be able and willing to change. A leader must look at leadership as a responsibly, and must be able to encourage, and uplifts those who are on their team. A leader must also recognize other peoples success as being theirs as well. And being able to actually lead has to be the first and far most important quality of a leader. Being able to lead simply means being able to take a vision or mission and execute it through actions and demonstrations. So again the question is, am I naturally a leader or a follower? And what can I do to make myself more comfortable or more effective as a leader? Well in my personal own opinion, I am both. I can be a leader when it necessary and a follower when it necessary. It depends on the situation. I have self confidence, charisma and great interpersonal skills that can sometime influence and motivate other people to participate in different things that will benefit them. I can recognize and create an environment in which all those who are involved in creativity, their talents can be display. That will encourage those whom I am leading. As a follower, I posses the same skills...

...said that a good leader takes people, not where they want to go, but where they ought to be. This is true in the business world because it is a leader's responsibility to direct others in a way that is beneficial for the organization and to inspire them to be as productive as possible. Doing so requires the synthesis of many good qualities. It is important to remember that leaders may not necessarily be managers, but may simply be a fellow employee, who through hard work has become the pillar of the company. Leadership is defined as the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals” (pg402, Organizational Behavior, S.A. Judge and T.A. Judge, 2006, 12th Ed.). A good leader is one that is interested in the welfare of the people they lead. Just because someone has been placed in a leadership capacity does not mean they can lead and /or motivate employees. Not all leaders are managers and not all managers are leaders. To lead effectively requires the ability to influence people for the good, and to inspire someone to bring out their hidden talents and skills. Everyone has potential and value. A good leader can see this in their employee and help to nurture their potential. Once becoming a leader selecting the right people is the key to having a successful team. Good judgment is an important element in effective leadership. Other attributes of a good leader that differ from someone who is not leadership...

...broad range of job opportunities are offered by various organisations. But all these organizations suffer from one common problem which is recognition problem- they can’t seem to recognize a good leader from bad ones. A leader is generally defined as someone who inspires, rules or guides the work activites of others. A good boss creates clear focus on desired outcomes, properly equip their operations for high performance and above all build strong working relationships and foster teamwork. He creates a climate where employees receive ongoing feedback and coaching and they strive to maintain a work-life balance. Flexibility, understanding and the ability to listen to the employees makes up some of the important characteristics of a good boss. On the contrary, a leader who criticizes, belittles and disrespects his employees earns the label of a bad boss. A bad boss fails to give recognition for the little things his employee does. Such leaders not only make life miserable for their employees, but hamper organizational performance. No one starts out their career trying to be a horrible boss. Yet, it is amazing to see that a vast majority of the folk seem to accomplish this feat with absolutely no training. It is possible that a good leader turns into bad under difficult situations. This could be personal or professional. Ergo, the perception of whether a boss is considered good or bad, should be based on factors considering...

Explain how framing influences leadership effectiveness. 6. Identify the four roles that team leaders perform. 7. Explain the role of a mentor. 8. Describe how on-line leadership differs from face-to-face leadership. 9. Identify when leadership may not be necessary. 10. Explain how to find and create effective leaders. CHAPTER OVERVIEW Effective managers today must develop trusting relationships with those whom they seek to lead. Why? As organizations have become less stable and predictable, strong bonds of trust are likely to be replacing bureaucratic rules in defining expectations and relationships. Managers who are not trusted are not likely to be effective leaders. Organizations are increasingly searching for managers who can exhibit transformational leadership qualities. They want leaders with visions and the charisma to carry those visions out. While true leadership effectiveness may be a result of exhibiting the right behaviors at the right time, the evidence is quite strong that people have a relatively uniform perception of what a leader should look like. They attribute “leadership” to people who are smart, personable, verbally adept, and the like. To the degree that managers project these qualities, others are likely to deem them leaders. For managers concerned with how to fill key...

...Skills for Effective Leadership Marion Johnson Wilmington University Abstract It is understood that management, which is defined as the act, manner, or practice of managing, handling, supervision, or control directly affects almost every aspect of the workplace (American Heritage, 2000). An incompetent or careless manager can have a devastating impact on an organization. This incompetent manger can cause and perpetuate decreased employee performance, dissatisfied customers, and poor production. An effective manager will avoid such effects through circumspect consideration and implementation of innovative management strategies. A leader sets the tone for those they supervise. Having a weak or ineffective leadership style turns what could be a productive organization into one that lacks direction, is chaotic, and fails to live up to its potential. Incompetent central leadership can also cause a power struggle amongst the other remaining team members. Groups seek leadership; when leaders fail to use their powers others will maneuver to use the power left in the void. This can lead to a power-struggle and backstabbing (Morgan, 2007). There are a plethora of skills that are necessary for effective management (Humphrey & Stokes, 2000), and there are just as many guidelines and principles that lend themselves to the advancement of admirable leadership. Many of these will be familiar, while others may be more obscure, but it is, arguably, the most valuable of the many management...

...the importance of the leader as a communicator. Framing: a way of communicating to shape meaning. Framing is a way for a leader to influence others. Charismatic leadership Charismatic leadership: a leadership theory which states that followers make attributions of heroic or extraordinary leadership abilities when they observe certain behaviours. Charismatic leaders have vision, they are willing to take risks to achieve that vision, they are sensitive to follower needs and they exhibit behaviours that are out of ordinary. Are charismatic leaders born or more? Individuals are born with traits that make them charismatic. But most experts believe that individuals also can be trained to exhibit charismatic behaviours. How charismatic leaders influence followers Influencing others is a four-step process. It begins by the leader articulating an appealing vision. Vision: a long-term strategy of attaining a goal or goals. Once a vision and a vision-statement are established, the leader then communicates high performance expectations and expresses confidence that followers can attain them. Next, the leader conveys, through words and actions, a new set of values and, by his or her behaviour, sets an example for followers to imitate. Finally, the charismatic leader engages in emotion-inducing and often unconventional behaviour to demonstrate courage and convictions about the vision. The dark side of charismatic leadership Many charismatic leaders used their power to remake...

A leader has drive and is committed to achieving their goals and vision. Leaders focus their attention on problems that need to be fixed, and will tackle the situation at hand. Leaders are determined, motivated, careful planners and effective communicators. Leaders are positive and do not waste time and effort with negativity. Effective communication is more than just being able to speak and write. An effective leader's communication encourages people to work toward their goals. A leader is motivated and motivates everyone to contribute to the organization (Owen, 2002). All of these attributes are what I considered when choosing a Leader to interview. I have chosen to interview G.O. who currently works as a Director of Nursing, and has an extensive background in management. This helps the doctor five more honest and open answers. 3. What letter grade would you give yourself for the ability to communicate in a multicultural setting? Why? I honestly would give myself an A for a letter grade. The reason is that when I am in a multicultural setting I try to relate myself to the other people and try to make them feel more comfortable. When you try to relate yourself to someone that is from different culture they will feel closer to you and will try to do same thing. 4. What are your personal hot buttons?
