Soul-Catcher, written by Louis Owens, is a short story about a young boy who is facing a crisis not only externally, but also internally. It is a recommended tale to read because it contains elements of conflict, suspense, and theme. The story is eventful because it contains two type of conflict, one that is dealt with physically, while the other conflict is handled mentally. The external conflict is between the young boy and the black panther, in which the young boy wishes to shoot the panther in order to protect his family. However, prior to this decision, the young boy faces a conflict with himself because if he connected with his indigenous background, he cannot shoot the panther as it is viewed as a spiritual animal. On the other hand, …show more content…
The story begins with an ominous atmosphere: “Out of the dark to the old man’s right came a scream that cut through the swamp like jagged tin…” (135). After meeting the panther, the young boy shows a firm urge to shoot it; however, the old man discourages him to do so. But it is evident that the young boy does not want to back down. This creates suspense as the readers are eager to know what the young boy plans to do. Even the conclusion of the story ends with a cliffhanger: “Beyond the doorway nalusachito [the panther] crouched, ready to spring” (143). Besides action and suspense to keep the readers intrigued, the story contains a moral lesson. One obvious theme that can be found in the story is to listen to the advice elders give. Even though they are older, they are also wiser and have more experience. Some of the advice given may not seem to be very helpful or relevant, it is never a bad idea to think about and consider it when making decisions as most advice contain some truth and can be applied to various situations. In the story, the young boy did not listen to his uncle’s advice, and as a result, he faces the consequences of meeting the

By Swales’ standards, it qualifies as a discourse community by meeting all six of the characteristics in his study. Softball is a discourse community, first and foremost, by the group selecting the team. The team shares common interests and goals. This community has a language that often times is understood only by this group. In a discourse community people are separated into occupational or specialized interests groups (Swales). The same thing is true in softball. There are key positons which cannot be filled by every player on the team. While a pitcher may be able to play second base or center-field, a member of the team who plays shortstop or catcher, cannot usually pitch. This group spends countless hours together, practicing and training, working towards a similar goal. The goal is to win all of their games, and that is achieved by scoring more runs than their opponents and having a pitching and defense game no one can beat. Baseball Tryout Narrative

...Baseball Tryout I approached the turf hearing the sound of metal bats as kids are hitting baseballs against the net. I feel the sweat drip from my head and run down my neck. I watch the other players warm up and notice a garage door against the back of the facility. The turf covering the floor of the facility is divided by four massive nets. I duck under the small openings in the nets and try to dodge all the baseball bags lying on the ground. I have to stop at each net and untangle my bats that keeps finding a way to get stuck in one everytime I duck. I set my bag down by the garage window and felt a cool breeze. I examined the window and noticed there was a massive crack to the right of the window and on the left, the window had a baseball stuck in it. It held onto the ball like a spider holding its prey. I proceeded to join in on the warm ups. I tossed the ball around with some guy I didn’t know. My heart pounded every time I caught the ball, knowing that the coaches’ eyes were directed towards me. The coach called all of us to meet up and then began some drills. At that moment the tryout began. Going into this tryout I was nervous but prepared. I went to two other tryouts and didn't make either team. I wanted to play travel baseball once I reached middle school and made a big decision to stop playing soccer. I had private hitting lessons from a friend of my dad's who coached a younger travel baseball team. He helped me fix my terrible batting stance and I had a lot of confidence...

Summary: Back Foot Connectivity In Pitching

...Back Foot Connectivity in Pitching by Jonathan de Marte – January 2nd, 2018 A mechanical predicament I have come to in the last year is whether or not a pitcher’s back foot should be connected with the ground at the point where the ball releases the hand. After analyzing teammates mechanics and comparing with big leaguers, I noticed that almost every pitcher with plus velocity has some sort of back-foot connectivity with the ground at release point. When I compared with major leaguers, I noticed the same positioning at release. Almost all were connected, or an inch or two from the ground. This is so important for me because I noticed that when I release the ball, my back foot is roughly 6-8 inches from the ground. I believe this leads to a...

How To Play Softball Essay

...Despite its name, softball is far from a soft sport. Some even argue that it’s harder than baseball. However, in both softball and baseball, batting is one of the hardest parts of the game. In order to be successful at the plate, one must understand what they are facing. In fast-pitch softball, the ball is thrown from 43 feet away averaging about 70 miles per hour. This gives the batter .350 milliseconds to react to the ball; that’s less than half of a second. Under these conditions, it becomes very apparent how important it is to understand the correct way to bat in order to increase one’s chances of actually hitting the ball. So, today I’m going to show you the most effective way to hit the ball. With the ball coming at you so fast, it is important you have the right equipment to protect yourself from the ball, so the first thing you will need is a helmet. Some players wear elbow guards; although this is not necessary, some believe it is effective in the way you swing. The most important equipment you’ll need while batting is a bat and batting gloves. The gloves protect your hands from blisters and help give you a better grip, and the bat, well, you can’t hit the ball without one. Then, do the same with your bottom hand. You want to make sure that your wrists are loose and the bat is placed...

Persuasive Essay About Baseball

...Baseball is a truly amazing and exciting game. The momentum can swing from offensive to defensive in a matter of seconds, sometimes just by only one pitch. One of the great things about baseball is that you don’t need to be physically talented or tall to win. Your physical appearance doesn’t matter; what really matters is your mental aspect. Nobody else but yourself controls your attitude. You need to be able to control your emotions, prepare yourself for each game, and block out fans. Baseball players play around four to five games a week. Because of this, they have to be prepared for each game. As Yogi Berra once said, “Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half physical,” you have to be always be thinking about what to do next in the game of baseball. Baseball is a game where your thoughts take over. Mentally preparing yourself includes focusing in on the upcoming game, getting all of your personal needs out of the way, and thinking about what you can improve on. But ironically, even though it is good to think mentally in the game of baseball, you can’t over-think each play. Overthinking will cause the same effects as not thinking at all. Once you are prepared for the game, you have to think positive while playing, and you will have to control your emotions. Having confidence in offense and defense during play time is key to success. If you don’t have courage on defense, you will be scared when a ground ball is hit to you, and you probably won’t field it. If you...

Race-Personal Narrative

...They tell me hey batter, batter, batter, hey, As I step up to the plate, Take my first step a little late, Then I ask myself is this really my fate. I look upon the pitcher as he throws the ball, He looks me directly in the eyes, and he’s nice and tall, My heart sinks in my chest, as I’m about to fall, But then my feet regain their strength I do recall. “Yes” I say as my feet land on first base, Now it’s up to my teammates to finish this race, Nervously I say “it’s up to you now” as I look them in the face, We must make this victory that is so swell taste. He takes the swing that the pitchers throw hard, I run as fast as I can to second with all my might, My fellow batter, played the right card, The game is so close and held together tight. The next hitter is up, And I can see his knees shaking, He is scared like a lonely pup, Then the ball fly’s and sprint for the taking Now the game is almost at its end, As I’m standing here at third, Now I can see hope at the next players that’s sent, And at last I see that ball fly like a bird. I take that first step towards home, And I can see it now as I’m stranded in the middle of the field, My feet start to flutter as I run to the people around the dome, And I see it now this game is peeled. As I’m rushing to the plate I see someone in the way of my trophy Someone trying to get me out I see, I come up and tumble under their feet, I see the disappointment across their face, as they are beat.
