...Development and Counseling Liberty University Career Field/Occupation of Choice For the purpose of this paper, I have chosen to explore the occupation field of education, guidance, school, and vocational counselors. More specifically, the focus of this paper will be on the career field of school counselors. My primary interest is identified as social, with my highest work value being relationships. These assessment results are accurate and highlight my personal passions and professional career aspirations. Nature of the Work A school counselor exists to support students, providing academic guidance, as well as personal counseling for students with special needs. The counselor serves as an advocate with the goal of guiding students towards success on both a personal and academic level. This support includes, but is not limited to, career development activities, drug and bullying prevention, and personal counseling regarding social, emotional, and behavioral issues. Although the duties will vary depending on the age of the student population, a school counselor exists to help students discover their unique abilities and interests. A school counselor will then assist the student in how to transfer their abilities and interests into career goals and life plans for a successful future. A typical workday may include one-on-one appointments with students and/or parents, as well as classroom activities and presentations. Personal appointments with a school counselor may offer...

...of teaching and counseling. Currently, as a school counselor for a high school in Duncanville, Texas, a suburb outside of Dallas, I find the results of the assessment to be very accurate. Making the decision to become a counselor is a rewarding and exciting career choice. In the world of counsling, there are many individuals who place emphasis on not just basic implications, but also on theoretical studies that usually are a part of their professional and personal experiences. As times have change, so have educational curricula. Counselors and educators, their philosophies, and educational standards continue to change; therefore, educators have to take on responsibility and think more about their chosen roles within the educational system and the various means of combining theory and practice. The general examination of the different roles in counseling, personal career assessments and ideological relationships each play a role in the area of education and counseling. As a result of the choice as having a career as a counselor attaches the decision to continue to research theories and then integrate them into areas of education helps to build a solid foundation, which will in due course will led to the creation of a personalized educational philosophy. The choice to be a counselor or educator gives an individual a chance to become more connected and familiar with both primary and present-day educational theories. Nature of the Work As a high school counselor works...

...children with special needs population, I decided to use this population in my paper. I selected this population because as these children grow older the problems they will face in adulthood also grow. Today many children have disabilities that may have happened during birth or a traumatic accident. Throughout life these children will struggle if they do not receive the right guidance, counseling, therapy, and love rom those around them. Testing and assessments that are not done before a child can enter in the special education program are two of the problems that are causing the program not to be provided. They have to wait for proper services once the testing and assessments are done to be placed in an education program. If special education services would increase educators still believes that the demand of special education would not be meet. Also another reason is the lack of funding for Medicaid to help with their medical needs. Being that their medical treatment is so expensive it caused cut backs on how many ties they receive medical treatment. It can be very frustrating for any parent with a child that has special needs when their child is in need of services. Services can really be hard to find for parents, such as childcare, or choosing the right type of long tern educational needs. Education is a service that is very important for special needs children. They really need education throughout adulthood. Most childcare provider does not accept special needs children...

...facilities share some qualities in common with adult prisons, but inmates have access to education, incentive programs, and more social services and support. Drug treatment in such facilities, for example, tends to be more readily available. Inmates in a juvenile incarceration facility usually have a very tight schedule, set to impose discipline. Like adult inmates, they work around the facility on tasks like cleaning and maintenance and may also perform other tasks. Many nations require that juveniles receive an education behind bars, and people may have a set number of hours of class each day. They can pursue equivalency tests while in juvenile incarceration so they leave prison with a certificate allowing them to seek jobs requiring a high...

...Improving Academic Performance and Achievement of children and youth in foster care Joanna Bermudez Mercy College Summer 2013 Introduction and Problem Statement Approximately fifty percent of adolescents in this country’s foster care system are graduating from high school each year. In NYS, less than forty-four percent of adolescent’s in the foster care system graduate from high school yearly. The outcomes of youth who leave the foster care system between the ages of 18 and 21 are statistically grim; less than 50% of these youth are equipped with a high school diploma (Scannapeieco, Connel-Carrick, and Pinter, 2007), and with-in two years of leaving the system, 25% of them face unemployment, homelessness, and/or incarceration (Krinsky, 2007). For all children, especially children in foster care, having the proper advocacy, stability, educational coordination and guidance are vital in ensuring their academic success. Unfortunately, children in foster care are less likely to receive these components to assist them in becoming successful in academia, which in turn affects their chances to live a productive adult life. The needs of the children and youth in foster care are in need of reformation across each state throughout the nation. Since the development of foster care, the focus of intervention has and continues to be a reactive approach, instead of a tactical approach. The intervention of foster care seeks to ensure the physical safety and well-being of each child...

...1977, guidance and counseling became an important issue in our schools system. Since then, guidance and counseling has been a regular topic in our dailies conferences and seminars. For example, Nnadi (1984). Stressed its importance in our educational system and the priority that should be given to it in out schools because of its usefulness in transition in the various stages of education. Also, Nwabuisi (1984), emphasized on the necessity of proper guidance programme in schools if the current national policy on education is to have the desired impact. Perhaps, Durojaiye's (1972), Stand on the issue of guidance and counseling in our schools was one of the factors that influenced the formulation of the aspect of the new national policy on education that deals with guidance programme in schools today. Taking into consideration, our rapid educational and economic growth, he emphasized on the need for guidance and counseling in our educational policy. In his words; "We can see that the need for guidance and counseling in Nigeria becomes increasingly pressing as economic and educational strides are being made in the country. Each student needs to be helped to strengthen his abilities to make nice choices and to face problems encountered in society. Those who fall by the way side because of physical, intellectual or emotional inadequacy particularly need guidance"(p.72). In the above statement, Durojaiye points out clearly the fact that guidance and counseling is very important...

...occurs every minute of every day across the globe. Throughout time many offenders have been sentence and released for crimes committed. As the years pass, by not only has the type of criminal behavior changed but also the age of the offender. Overcrowding in the criminal justice system is at an all-time high with no end in sight. Laws are changed through trial and error. Change does seem to be evolving with the focus and understanding of the dangers when it comes to overcrowding. The Dangers of overcrowding: Prison Murders, Rapes, Suicides, (Offenders and Correctional Staff), are increasing within the prison setting. There appears to be fewer officers, nurses, and psychologist to meet the needs of the prisoner. Too few staff members not only promote violence, but also place the community in harm’s way. Prison escapes seem to be a special concern when it comes to the safety to victims and families involved. Mental Patients: In many cases mentally challenged offenders are misdiagnosed or simply housed with the regular population due to overcrowding and lack of staff. This lessens the likelihood of rehabilitation prevailing, without proper medical care and counseling. In these cases violence could present or incite riots, escapes and death. In California, there have been several mental patients who were found dead due to suicide incidents. In these cases it would seem to be easy for a prisoner, who has a mental challenge to be misdiagnosed and not given medications...

...Multicultural Awareness Mental Health Counseling After reviewing the results of my multicultural self-assessment scores, I have found that overall; I am very comfortable with myself and choices. In counseling, before understanding someone else you must first be able to understand yourself. Also the awareness of your own comfort range must be apparent. If it was not apparent, then how could you counsel someone else when you are uncomfortable with yourself? This self-assessment allowed me to realize factors that seemed to be unapparent before but, led me to see that they were important after all. “If you are lucky enough to be other, don’t ever change” I identified mostly with Jason Patton, PhD when he spoke about his first day at kindergarten, and he was made to feel other. What most got my attention was that he mentioned that he was an only child and spent a lot of time with adults, and was eager to be interacting the children his own age. I too was an only child and spent a lot of time with and adults. They adored me and made me feel loved, wanted and special. My first day at school was awful. The children looked at me as though I was an alien. I remember distinctly being called a chocolate girl, and then the comments about me being so tall began. From that point on I really did not enjoy school at all. I was afraid of being different. Being different meant that people might not like me. In my mind being called chocolate...

...New Students in the School Counseling Program New Students in the School Counseling Program Counseling and Special Populations CNDV 5380 Section A: Career Position Becoming a Professional School Counselor is the career position I have always wanted to pursue. Having been an Elementary School P.E. teacher and a Middle School Social Studies teacher for over seventeen years, I have encountered all types of students. Today’s students come to school with a lot of pressure and baggage including but not limited to financial stresses, illness, family issues, and others. In my experience, what I have found to be most true is that it does not matter what pressures and issues students may have, we all have a responsibility to educate them. Sometimes that “one” person can change another person’s whole direction in life. As a school counselor, I plan on being an advocate for students. I plan on improving the educational processes for struggling students and for those on the bubble. I plan on making a difference in many lives while giving purpose and meaning to my own life. I believe that now is the time to pursue my goal of being a professional school counselor. I have insight, knowledge, and forethought that will enable me to be successful and in return enable my students to be successful. Section B: Statement of Purpose The purpose of obtaining a Master’s Degree in School Counseling not only furthers my education, but also will open doors and allow for professional...

...Accomplished, achievement-driven and results oriented individual, seeking entry into Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling with a Forensic Counseling specialization. Personal/Professional Goals I am interested in furthering my degree, so I can advance in my career and more effectively help people with mental health disorders within the judicial system. After I earn a Master’s of Science in Mental Health Counseling I want become a licensed clinician. My focus primarily will be on helping youth that are court adjudicated into residential therapeutic facilities, such as KidsPeace. At KidsPeace they accept adjudicated clients but there is not a specific program in place to effectively treat these individuals. It is my goal along with the program director of the organization for myself to develop and pioneer a conduct disorder program and establish it within the KidsPeace organization. The reasoning behind choosing this field is my work experience and some of the population I have been exposed to. Through my observation violence is a learned behavior, and unfortunately young victims of violence generally become perpetrators of crime and develop mental health disorders. Many times if juvenile offenders are not adjudicated to the correct residential therapeutic facility; that specializes in conduct disorder programming. When this happens these individuals are more likely to cycle through the judicial system and become career criminal, which leads to over populated correctional...
