...the dark triad personalities, characterized by a duplicitous interpersonal style, a cynical disregard for morality and a focus on self-interest and personal gain. Political thought In the 16th century, immediately following the publication of The Prince, Machiavellianism was seen as a foreign plague infecting northern European politics, originating in Italy, and having first infected France. It was in this context that the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572 in Paris came to be seen as a product of Machiavellianism, a view greatly influenced by the Huguenot Innocent Gentillet, who published his Discours contre Machievel in 1576, which was printed in ten editions in three languages over the next four years.[3] Gentillet held, quite wrongly according to Sydney Anglo, that Machiavelli's "books [were] held most dear and precious by our Italian and Italionized [sic] courtiers" in France (in the words of his first English translation), and so (in Anglo's paraphrase) "at the root of France's present degradation, which has culminated not only in the St Bartholemew massacre but the glee of its perverted admirers".[4] In fact there is little trace of Machiavelli in French writings before the massacre, not that politicians telegraph their intentions in writing, until Gentillet's own book, but this concept was seized upon by many contemporaries, and played a crucial part in setting the long-lasting popular concept of Machiavellianism.[5] The English playwrights William Shakespeare...

...12/16/10 Saint Patrick’s Day Saint Patrick’s Day is an old, historical Irish holiday. It has two histories, the history of Patrick himself, and the history of the day, March 17. It marked an important religious movement in Ireland’s history also. It was significant, and brings many of the important Irish symbols and legends together into one day. The person who was to become St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Wales, Scotland or Roman-England in about AD 373 to AD 390. His father was Calpurnius; he was a Roman-British army officer. His original name was believed to be Maewyn Succat, and he almost didn't get the job of bishop of Ireland because he didn’t have the required scholarship. Until he was 16, he considered himself a pagan; then he was sold into slavery on the west coast of Ireland by either a group of Irish marauders, or pirates that raided his village. During his captivity, he became closer to God. He escaped from slavery after six years this was when he started to convert to Christianity. He dreamed of having seen God; legend says, he was then dictated by God to escape with a getaway ship. Then he went to Britain where he studied in the monastery under St. Germaine, bishop of Auxerre for about twelve years. During his training he became aware that his calling was to convert the pagans to Christianity. His wanted to return to Ireland, to convert the native pagans to Christianity. But his superiors instead appointed St. Palladius, but two...

...just always have good luck, others just don’t have luck at all. If you ask St. Patrick himself, he might disagree because he believes in God and that he has the power to oversee everything that happens to you. On the other hand, if you ask someone who is not a religious seeker they might say that luck is just something that is magical or witchcraft. One thing that relates to luck is the little shamrocks- some believe if you find the 4-leaf clover among the shamrocks, you are said to be lucky. Is this true? everyone has their own opinion about luck but it all depends on how you look at it. Let’s learn more about the shamrock and how it relates to this holiday. The green Shamrock is a symbol of St Patrick’s day because of the man himself: St. Patrick. “According to Biblical scriptures, the religious figure used a shamrock as a metaphor for the Christian Holy Trinity.” Each of the 3 leaves represent God in 3 forms: The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. How it has to do with luck, some may question. Some get confused with the shamrock and the special four leaf clover; although they are close relatives. “And He watched over me before I knew Him and before I...

...User: from the marketing perspective, what has guinness done to ensure its longevity? Weegy: They made sure that Guinness can be remembered on St Patricks day. [ [ Guinness has stood the test of time, in part, because it has carefully managed its equities and resisted the urge to overextend itself into sub-brands that don?t resonate with its brand promise. Guinness? equity strategy is simple, yet effective: identify the core brand assets and leverage them across all touchpoints, all of the time. Black as the dominant color, the harp as logo and a unique opening ceremony are all symbols of the elite club to which Guinness loyalists belong. Similar to Apple and Starbucks consumers who flaunt their white headphones or white coffee cups as they walk down the street, brandishing a Guinness bottle or glass conveys a statement of belonging; of understanding the brand at a deep, emotional level. ] ] Auto answered|Score .9955|Fanboy|Points 340| User: how would you characterize the Guinness brand? ...Christian faith in these lands we have this sensitive, powerful, community based, care free mission church. Perhaps this church, more than any other, discovered what God has truly given to these lands, a missionary responsibility that is not to do with the imposition of Western Culture and manipulation, but with a humble, foolish abandonment to the Gospel of the Lord Jesus.”[1] Celtic Christianity, tradition and history, is acknowledged as the first Christian Church outside the Holy Land. Since Celtic Christianity was established prior to the first century it is classified as pre- Nicene . Christianity from that period, is sometimes referred to as "primitive” Christianity. [2] In his day, Julius Caesar noted that the entire Gallic nation was very religious.[3] Of course, he was speaking about pagan Celts, but a deep religiosity has been a characteristic of the Celts in general over the centuries, and especially during the Christian era. Alexander Carmichael (1832-1912) , who collected folklore in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland during the nineteenth century, is another, more recent witness to the deep religiosity of the Celts. He observed that the music of their hymns had a distinct individuality, which resembled, but was clearly distinct from, the old Gregorian chants of the Church. He ventured the opinion that this peculiar and beautiful music was that of the old Celtic Church.[4] The...

...History: It was first settled around the year 8,000 BC when hunters came from Great Britain and Europe. Early Irish society was organized into a number of kingdoms. They were pagans for thousands of years. This changed in the early 5th century AD, when Christian missionaries, including St. Patrick, arrived. In the 9th century Vikings invaded Ireland. In 1534 land was confiscated from Catholic Irish landowners and given to Protestants from England and Scotland. Religion became a source of division. During the 18th century, many laws discriminated Catholics. By 1778, only 5% of the land was owned by Catholics. In 1801 the Irish parliament was abolished and Ireland became part of the “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland”. In 1922, the southern 26 counties of Ireland seceded from the UK. They new country called itself the Irish Free State. Ties with Great Britain were cut in 1948. The country became known as the Republic of Ireland. ...Patrick Henry “Give me Liberty or give me death!” Robert C. Ramsey II History 221-D23, Survey of American History I November 5, 2012 While addressing the Second Virginia Convention at the St. Johns Church in Richmond, Virginia Patrick Henry gave his call to arms speech. It was a call to action, the time for talk and half measures was over. “He stated there was no time for ceremony”.1 He wanted colonist to see how England did not see them as equal but as a servant. The Question he raised was it freedom or slavery? Patrick Henry felt so strongly on the subject of liberty just the act of not making this speech would be treason to him. “I should consider myself guilty of treason toward my country, and of an act disloyalty toward the majesty of heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings”1. He wanted his fellow Virginians to see how England was and would still oppress the colonies if they let them continue. He wanted them to see something had to be done about the way England was treating the colonies. He wanted them to know the truth. Patrick Henry justified this by using the past ten years as an example how England had listened to their grievances and complaints only to be met with a false sense that England actually cared about what was happening in the colonies. The British have repeatedly threatened the revocation of its charter. Over the past decade England had taxed the colonies without any representation in the matter and then trying harder...

...on a personal level to a degree that may seem almost anarchic, but which symbolizes the continuity of the patron-client relationship, which constituted the basis of politics in rural Ireland. The achievement of the Catholic Irish in Canada but also elsewhere has been the translation of this personal approach into the management of politics and power in the modern context. 1 AUSTRALIA Irish in Australia All around the world, descendants of Irish emigrants have struggled to preserve pride in their ancestral culture. For instance Boston Celtics basketball team keep the Irish descendants pride alive in America. Whilst Irish descendants in Australia have mostly abandonned. According to the Irish Australian historian Patrick O'Farrell 2: "Australia first became what amounted to the Australian Irish Catholic slogan. These Australians of Irish background did not tend to regard Ireland as their "mother country". The penal aspect offers one explanation for why the Irish Australians abandonned their pride in the motherland. In America's founding era, people of English descent formed the bulk of the population, and were considered as first class citizens. The Irish, alongside with black people were considered as a second class minority, which naturally encouraged a sense of victimhood. On the other hand, in the mid-19th century, around 75 per cent of the population was a Convict, Emancipist, or of Convict descent. As a result, most of the population were second...

...Biblical Themes from Patrick Henry Sarah Lumbard HIUS 221 January 30, 2014 On March 23, 1775 Patrick Henry stood before the House of Burgesses in St. Johns Church in Richmond Virginia. His eloquent speech, now known as the famous “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech, was given to the members of the House, which included Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. The audience was a predominately Christian audience, as most men were in colonial days. Having been moved by the Great Awakening to be more involved in the politics and be a Christian influence, Henry appealed to the patriot and the Christian in each member of the audience. Throughout Henry’s speech, biblical themes can be found. Henry was not using the biblical phrases in context per say, but he was using them as catch phrases to appeal to the Christian morals and Biblical knowledge that these men had. One of the many biblical references that jumps out is in relation to the crown not listening to the colonists as they petition for fair treatment as British subjects and respect for their rights, and yet were always denied. Henry says, “Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a kiss.” This vivid imagery reminds us of the kiss from Judas on Jesus’ cheek as he identifies him to the Roman soldiers. Luke 22: 47b-48 says, “And he approached Jesus to kiss Him. But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” To the colonists, this kiss represents the betrayal of the King of England...
