Stage Play Experience Analysis

...I have always revered plays as literature to read like a short story or a novel. My enjoyment of plays has usually been in this capacity. Seeing a play on stage, as I'm sure the author intended it to be experienced, has never been a priority for me. The two experiences I've had with stage plays occurred through work obligations and were not activities I looked forward to. The biggest assumption I held was that, unlike other forms of entertainment, stage plays could not be captivating. It was difficult for me to accept that anything could achieve a believable and entertaining flow of action without editing techniques, like camera zooms and proofreading. I also did not believe that a stage Actor could pull off a role in a way that I could relate...

As a Director, How Would You Stage the Printed Extract from Your Chosen Set Play in Order to Bring Out Your Interpretation of It for an Audience?

...would you stage the printed extract from your chosen set play in order to bring out your interpretation of it for an audience? Your answers should include justified suggestions for the director of your cast and for the design of the piece as appropriate to the style of the play and to your creative overview of it. A View from the Bridge is a naturalist play written by Arthur Miller in 1955. It follows the Carbone family as they welcome two illegal immigrants into their home while they work to make money for their families back in Italy. However, the head of the household, Eddie doesn’t take a liking to one of the immigrants, Rodolpho. As Rodolpho and Eddie’s niece, Catherine get closer and closer it angers Eddie. This anger ultimately leads to his dead. The play deals with themes such as love, family and honour. In this extract, Catherine and Rodolpho have returned from seeing a film to Eddie waiting for them in the street. Eddie discussed Catherine’s relationship with Rodolpho with her and towards the end of the exact brings up the fact that Rodolpho may only want to be in a relationship with her for his American citizenship. While directing this scene, my intensions would be for the audience to feel sympathy for Eddie and a sadness for Catherine. As well as this, I would also want them to feel a new unease towards Rodolpho as this will be the first time the audience will see that Rodolpho may have ulterior motives for his relationship with Catherine. I would stage this play...

Popular Stage Play Analysis

...MKT – 21 20140544 What If? We, the FEU Diliman students, were given a chance to watch the musical stage play #Popular (Paano Kung Pinoy si Kiko?) written and directed by Vince Tañada. It tells the story about on how Pope Francis inspired Filipino heroes of the modern times. It started off with five Filipinos asking the question “Paano kung Pinoy si Kiko?” First was Joey Velasco who was a very brilliant painter well-known for his painting Table of Hope (Hapag ng Pag-asa) which portrayed Jesus Christ fraternizing with street children instead of his disciples. Joey was suffering cancer. Painting was his motivation through out all his challenges in life. Before he died he helped two street children who were also painted in his last painting – Table of Hope (Hapag ng Pagasa). After the people saw his painting many people were asking on how they could help the street children. He was able to show that art is a good medium to convey message to others and lead to something great. Second was Kristel Padasas, a 27-year-old Catholic volunteer who met her demise during a papal mass for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan last January. Kristel was eager to get close to the Pope during the mass rally. But an unexpected incident happened. The loud speaker fell into her head and it caused Kristel’s death. Third was Dr. Edgardo Gomez, a world-renowned marine biologist who was awarded the rank of National Scientist of the Philippines last year. He vowed to protect the coral reefs even...

As a Set and/or Lighting Designer, What Effects Would You Want to Create for Your Audience in Act 1 and Act 2? Explain How Your Set Design/Lighting Design Would Change from Act 1 to Act 2.

...would change from Act 1 to Act 2. A Doll’s House by Henrick Ibsen is an iconic play expressing harsh truths on social rules and etiquette in the late 1800’s. The play allows a simple yet symbolic set and lighting design – forcing the audience to think and question the play writes intentions as well as the interpretation of the director. The play is over a period of three days; Act 1 is on Christmas Eve and Act 2 being over Christmas day –the set changes over both acts in small but significant ways allowing the audience to understand the detrition of the perfect reality in which Nora lives by. As a set or lighting designer, I would want the audience to experience a tense, chilling and abrupt atmosphere that illuminates the distorted reality, which is being broken slowly. As women during the late 1800’s where not meant to become involved with the dealings of money and business – it was the man’s job. By doing this Nora has brought on a sense of shame and disgrace to her family, as Helmer is lead to believe by the influence of society that he can no longer control his wife. In Act 1, Ibsen indicates to the set and lighting designers how he wishes the play to be set up. From the stage directions I am able to understand that the atmosphere within the opening scene of the play should be ‘comfortable and tasteful’ but ‘not expensively furnished’, allowing the audience to be welcomed to the play. By not ‘expensively’ furnishing the set, the audience understand the previous finical...

Inspector Calls

...I saw a production of East is East at The New Alexander Theatre. My first impressions were that I was very excited to watch this play because I could relate to this play and the title ‘East is East’ was interesting and made me wonder what will the play be about. I think the director Ayub Din Khan wanted to express the Asian culture and his experience to the British audience. I watched this performance on 15th January 2015. In this controlled Assessment, I will be analysing the performance of East is East. The key characters in the play were: Ayub Din Khan (George), Jane Horrocks (Ella) and Micheal Karim (Sajit). George (Ayub Din Khan) is the head of the Khan family, who tries to enforce his culture in a different society. He rose and grew throughout the play with is humour. I believe he is an obvious stereotype due to the clothing he wears. His clothing reflects that he is a typical, narrow-minded Pakistani father. His strong determination to help his family was evident throughout the play. Ella is the mother of 6 children, whose first priority is the happiness of her children. She is the wife of George who tries to keep the family together. Throughout the play, Ella delivers a fun and incredibly emotional scene with equal excellence. Sajit, the son of Ella is a vulnerable child and shows the impacts of the family problems through his quietness. The first thing I noticed was the set. The set was realistic and had different locations; living room, the Khan chippie...

How Did the Arrival of Immigrants Affect the Carbone Household

...How does the arrival of the immigrants affect the Carbone Household? As the play progresses, the audience is introduced to Beatrice’s cousins – Marco and Rodolpho. It is soon realised by the audience/reader that the the arrival of the guests cause mixed feelings in every member of the Carbone family, which are displayed in the play by Miller’s language and stage directions. However it is important to understand Marco and Rodolpho’s characters to better acknowledge the changes they cause within their host’s household. Marco and Rodolpho seem to have total opposite personalities and goals. Marco is focused on aiding his family and and getting a better life for them –this results in the audience sympathising with him as he displays faithfulness towards his wife and kids. This is further intensified by the stage directions offered by Miller, such as “His eyes are showing tears….He is near tears” these phrases prove that Marco’s intentions to aid his family is genuine which further contributes to the audience’s sympathetic feelings. On the other hand, Rodolpho is displayed as a character of outstanding an unique personality who has ambitions for his own self. The very first that we hear about Rodolpho is that he is blonde unlike his brother, “How come he’s so dark and you’re so light,Rodolpho?”. This phrase is used here by Miller to place a differentiating line to let the audience know the differences between these two’s personalities and ambitions. Unlike Marco, Rodolpho wishes...

Teamwork and Team Performance

...Teamwork and Team Performance - Case Study 3/23/2013   Contents 1. Group Development 3 2. Problem Identification 3 3. Retrospective Evaluation 4 4. Reflection 5   1. Group Development There are five stages of group development in which a team passes through: Forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. The group for this case study is currently, 1 week before the due date, in both the norming stage and performing stage. They have adapted to the absence of Mike and are motivated to finish the analysis in an effort to achieve a good grade. Each member has completed their part except Mike, who has just handed in notes to Christine. All of the other members have looked past any turmoil of Mike and either adapted to that or ignored him. Managing a team through these five stages will increase the overall effectiveness of that team; therefore understanding the different stages could have assisted Christine. If she knew what each stage entailed ahead of time, she could have anticipated certain issues or attempted to resolve them. In the beginning Christine should have laid out the group rules, assigned all the tasks, and allowed the members to introduce themselves and get to know one another. I think she did a good job leading them into scheduled meetings; however, Mike was just a complainer about the early meeting. When tension arose in the group, because Mike was upset seeing the group members having a good time and mingling without him...

...during the pre-operational and concrete operational stage. (300 words) Pre-operational stage: The preoperational stage ranges from about ages 2 to 7 (Piaget, 1951, 1952). The child in this stage is pre (before) operations. This means the child cannot use logic or transform, combine or separate ideas. The child's development consists of building experiences about the world through adaptation and working towards the (concrete) stage when it can use logical thought. During the end of this stage children can mentally represent events and objects (the semiotic function), and engage in symbolic play. 1. Smell Games: Present a collection of strong smelling items such as oranges, roses, mint or vanilla for preoperational stage activities involving the senses. Have the kids try to guess the item by just using the sense of smell. 2. Sense of Touch: Similar to the sense of smell games, gather together items such as fabric, leaves, mud, sandpaper and cotton balls. Have children describe how the item feels. You can have the child sort items according to touch as well. For instance, have the kids group the rough, soft or squishy feeling items into piles. Ask the children to find all the soft feeling items in the group and pull them out. These preoperational stage activities use the senses and the child's ability to sort and make distinctions among objects.   Concrete Operational stage: Piaget (1954) considered the concrete stage a major turning point in the child's cognitive development...

...teachers, just like many schools today. Teachers are often faced with harsh realities when they start fresh at a school, because of the dysfunctional system in place and then they burn out, and quit. Our textbook talk about the five stages: Forming-Stage, Storming Stage, Norming Stage, performing stage and adjourning Stage. It seems the group is stuck in the forming and storming stage. The group has no sense of direction, structure or leadership and everyone has their own opinions of how the groups should be run. There are already strong opinions on how the problems should be solved regarding truancy, low performance, crimes rate and creating an effective after school program. Referring back to the stages and understanding of the stages would have assisted the Woodson Foundation tremendously. First the forming stage was not completed, the groups should have met and established roles, structure and the purpose and it’s clear that was not established. You have the principal and the superintendent thinking the school should have more power, and not involving the parents, and other members with their opinions as well, which is a clear example that a purpose was not established. Second, the members did not hash out who was going to be doing what, and this stage was not completed because there was not a relatively clear hierarchy of leadership in the group. Third if the group had set a a clear and common expectation, there would be common expectation. All the members are interested in meeting...

...The SouthBySoWhat concert brought a hurricane of people and intoxicating events. This entertainment venue carried a truly amazing experience to the metro-plex.             Many extraordinary people traveled to this concert from many different states; some patrons from California held a thin, crudely wrapped calendric object with smoke curling thickly from it like smokestacks. My friends and I, being only juniors in high school, investigated with curiosity. We know what cigarettes look like, but this peeked our curiosity. The smell came in waves along with the smoke from which seemed to crawl directly towards us. The smell being so pungent told us exactly to what curiosity lead us to, marijuana. Excited and scared our nerves jittered in our bodies as our mind raced with questions. The guys, all dressed in skinny jeans and various band T- shirts, looked us over cooly. They smiled and held up the calendric object as if to offer it to us. Overwhelmed by the offer, we stood frozen like statues. We finally moved after what seemed like years of time going by, but being only mere seconds in our buzzing reality. As we reached the group of three, our excitement seemed to dwindle as fear crept into our minds with each step. We knew not these guys; we had no clue to what they smoked. What could happen to us? Even with all of these questions, we continued to walk forward. Finally, meeting them close to a crowd of throbbing bodies, we stopped. The tallest boy of the three, an olive colored...

Dear Stuck in the Middle

...Dear Stuck in the Middle,               First off don’t beat yourself up about the problems in your relationship, we all go through them and I am sure it will get better. That being said, I do agree with you on this matter. The Never Ending Story was an amazing show. The actors in GPAC were pretty great. Moving away from my opinion now, I can give some details on what they play was really about and the meanings of each scene and characters. The plot pretty easy to follow and was actually very clever. This story used two levels of reality. This means that there were two different things going on at once, there was the boy reading the book and then there was the actually tale that was being told. Maybe that’s why your girlfriend had a hard time believing this was a good show, she maybe didn’t understand why there was just a random boy (who was played by an obvious girl) on the side of the stage. It seemed to be this modern fairy tale that seemed to somehow mash well with the reality today. This show spoke to the little scared child that is in all of us, it gave us hope and made us feel like the hero. The acting quality in GPAC could have been more professional, but it was a student production, so for what it was I feel it was pretty descent. We all make mistakes every now and then, it’s only natural. The costumes and the scenery were basic, but it was still somehow enchanting. The dresses and the costumes for the different characters were pretty nice to look at, the horse could...
