Stereotypes On Pitbulls

It is absolutely appalling when a person walks up to me when I have my dog on a leash next to me and asks if she is a pitbull. My answer is short but sweet when I say "no". Why should it matter if my large, yet well behaved dog on a leash is a pitbull or not. It matters because people only hear about pit bulls in stereotypes when they attack other people and animals. I tell you not all pitbulls are bad in fact most of them are sweet, caring dogs. As for the other small percentage, those dogs aren't born into this scary, unfriendly world as bad creatures instead they were molded into monsters by their owners. In our lives now that would be like meeting a person at the grocery store, asking what their ethnicity is, then if the answer is middle

Breed Specific Legislation Essay

...BSL is a law which is passed by many states and countries which ban and regulate certain breeds in the hope of reducing dog bites and to make communities safer. BSL started in the 1980’s as many people were frustrated with the number of dog bites by pitbull type dogs in their communities. American pitbull terrier, American staffordshire terrier, staffordshire bull terriers, and English bull terriers, which are most commonly known as “pitbulls” are most affected. To determine if a breed is safe in communities and homes a temperament test is given. As a whole the American pitbull terrier scored an 86.8 percent and scored higher than golden retrievers and collies. According to onegreenplanet.org between 1999 and...

With Reference to Your Own Detailed Examples Explore the Representation of the Gender in the Media Today

...genders should take certain roles in our society. For example, men are stereotyped to be masculine and heroic whereas in everyday life, that is not the case. Representation is the way in which people are presented and perceived or interpreted in a particular way. Firstly is the New Man ( breaking the stereotype), this example is from the Amazing Spiderman. In the film, Andrew Garfield is presented as being the hero, but he approaches it in a different way. It proves that the hero is not traditionally ‘macho’ or aggressive as he is a geekier/nerdy lead character which goes against the norm. Also he is not afraid to be seen as smart and being clever due to him having a positive attitude. His iconography is that he is dressed as Peter Parker; which reflects his desire to ‘blend in’ with his 2 identities. When is being Spiderman, the colour pallet is always brighter. It also tells us that he is young, which creates audience identification. The mise-en-scene of the settings reflects his surroundings. For instance, in the city, he looks out of place, whereas at home, the lighting and colour pallet reflects his clothing. In The Amazing Spiderman, the lead still follows the stereotype to a certain extent as the lead is still a male, where he is still actively saving the day and the female role. He is not the victim in the film and is defined in the film by what he does and who is he: Spiderman. Another type is Masculinity (GQ magazine). The colours of the wording are bold and masculine;...

...Alexis Serrano Introduction to Psychology Paper 3 Conformity is another term for peer pressure. Women seem to want to stand out instead of to conform whereas men are more likely to conform then stand out. Deindividualization makes people more vulnerable to conform because people are forced to be or act like a different person than what they are confortable with. Obedience is when orders are taken from someone in authority, or someone is higher than us. I am thankful for obedience or else the world would never function properly. In high school, I witnessed so many different examples of conformity and obedience, whether or not I was the one involved or I saw it happen to other people. It may happen to you even if it is an accident. I was on the school’s varsity soccer team all four years of high school and there were several times when the girls wanted to me to do something they were doing and most of the time I refused because I knew it was wrong or it just was not something I wanted to participate in. I was always considered the good kid and would usually never do anything wrong. I never cheated on a test, or let anyone cheat off of me intentionally, talk back to the teacher or bully anyone. One example for conformity, that I denied, that I will never forget is on a Wednesday night at a team dinner, the coach had already left and one of the girls took us outside and pulled out a few bottles of alcohol and suggested we drink, knowing we had a big game the next day. I took...

The Truth About Pitbulls

...The Truth about Pitbulls Ryan K. Smith University of Phoenix The Pit Bull breed of dog has a very bad reputation. This is because Pit Bulls are used as fighting dogs for some people’s amusement. Little do people know Pit Bulls are very good family dogs, and often called “The Nanny Dog”. I personally own three Pit Bulls, and have interviewed someone who does not own a pit bull. I have found a lot of information about this breed of dogs and everything points to one question. Although some individuals perceive pit bull dogs to have a bad reputation, many have found these animals to be wonderful house pets when treated with kindness and love. The stereotype of a pit bull is not good at all, but why does this stop people from owning them? I asked a non pitbull owner why she will not own a pitbull. “I personally got bit by a pit bull, so I have seen what they are capable of and this scares me. These dogs have a very powerful jaw and it makes being bit worse. I’m just personally scared of this breed of dog. Being scared of this breed of dog because of being bit by one, makes me weary of going to other people’s homes that own this breed because I’m scared of being bit again.” (Cassie Bailey’s personal interview). I also interviewed a pitbull owner as well. “By owning the pit bull breed for most of my life I have never had a problem out of any of the dogs I have had. The pit bull breed has a bad name, but my dogs have never bit or attacked anyone. My dogs are very...

Animal Cruelty Laws

...“A New Jersey man raised thousands of dollars in vet bills by saying an ATV ran over his dog-When he was the one abusing the pup…” Tamar Lapin, New York Post. This is just one of the many cases of animal cruelty going on in the world. In fact, abusers of animals are 5 times as likely to wound a human. Almost 50% of victims who stay in the home, say that they only stayed because they feared for their animals and many never leave because of this. Animal Cruelty laws should be strengthened because of the abuse, the statistics, and their breeds. In a survey 71% of domestic violence victims reported that their abusers also targeted their pets. Domestic abuse victims also reported that their abusers also targeted their pets. Families under...
