...Exam #4 Study Guide MGT 311 –Spring 2011 Chapters 11 and 12 – Compensation 1. What is compensation? What are the two main categories of compensation? “All forms of financial returns and tangible services and benefits employees receive as part of an employment relationship.” Direct: Base pay (wages, salaries); Variable pay (bonuses, incentive, stock options) Indirect: Health/Medical insurance; life/disability insurance; paid time off; retirement/pension plans; educational assistance 2. What are the factors that affect how much someone gets paid? (This was an in-class activity) Economic influence on pay; 3. What is equity theory? What are the consequences of inequity? • People measure outcomes such as pay in terms of their inputs. Fairness of pay relative to that of other employees (Op/Ip < = > Oo/Io) • Op/Ip = Oo/Io => balance – no change • Op/Ip > Oo/Io => overreward inequity (Re-evaluate to make = ) • Op/Ip < Oo/Io => underreward inequity (Reducing one’s inputs (not working as hard); Increasing one’s outcomes (theft); leaving( withdraw by leaving the organization or refusing to cooperate) 4. What are the three pay level policies we discussed in class? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using each type? P319. Lead, Match, or Follow (>the rate set by market force) 5. What are compensable factors? Why are they important for an organization? “Job attributes that provide...

...Everi THE INTERACTION OE COGNITIVE BIAS, PSYCHOLOGICAL SAEETY, AND SYSTEM COMPLEXITY Michael A. Roberto B usiness leaders and scholars have learned important lessons from tragedies such as the Challenger disaster, the Bay of Pigs fiasco, and the Three Mile Island accident.' Similarly, we can leam important lessons about leadership and decision making from the unfortunate events that took place on Mount Everest several years ago. Survivors have offered many competing explanations for this tragedy. While they have focused on the tactical blunders, this research examines the underlying cognitive, interpersonal, and systemic forces that played a role in the incident. This conceptual analysis suggests that cognitive biases, team beliefs about interpersonal risk taking, and system complexity interacted to create a fatal disaster. Incredible achievement and great tragedy unfolded on the treacherous slopes of Everest on May 10, 1996. TVventy-three people reached the summit along the South Col route in Nepal on that day, including Rob Hall and Scott Fischer, two of the world's most skilled and experienced high-altitude climbers. Unfortunately, Hall, Fischer, and three members of their expeditions died as a storm enveloped the mountain during their descent. Others barely escaped with their lives after many hours wandering in the dark while braving subzero temperatures. Hall, the leader of the Adventure Consultants expedition, had established an impressive track...

...neurological disorders experience interference with their ADLs. Procedural learning Procedural learning is the knowledge of the steps required to perform the task to result in the acquisition of skills [6]. In a study that measured accuracy over a period of 3 days, children with DCD showed no improvement in motor accuracy, concluding that DCD populations have an impaired procedural learning capacity [28]. Comparatively, children with DCD can be trained to learn simple finger tapping tasks after being procedurally trained for the more substantial time frame of two weeks [4]. However, it is difficult for this information to be applied to assisting those with DCD in carrying out ADLs, since finger tapping is a relatively simple task. A task-oriented approach that stems from procedural learning is Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupation Performance (CO-OP). CO-OP has the main objective of skill acquisition, with an emphasis on discussion rather than practice. Throughout CO-OP, a therapist teaches children to consider ADLs by formulating a plan, carrying out the action and then checking to see if the plan worked [17]. Though CO-OP has been found to be successful [19], it is limited in its strategies as only cognitive strategies are used to enhance motor learning. For CO-OP to be a more robust approach, it could incorporate more motor engagement in ADLs. Procedural learning requires to be studied in more complex paradigms over a representative time frame, for example complex sequence...

...Chapter 4 Income From Business - Assignment Name _____________________________________________ Problem 1 (extracted from CCH 15/16 – Study Guide- Similar to Q1 in Study Guide 14/15) You are a co-op student working in the accounting department at Crystal Enterprises Inc. and have been asked to help with the year-end tax provision. You have gone through the detailed accounts that make up the company’s income statement and have made a list of items for which you have questions. When you took them to your boss, he asked you to determine whether the accounting treatment and the tax treatment are the same, and, if they are not, what they should do. (1) The company made charitable donations of $15,000 in the year. (2) While looking at the accounts receivable you noticed that they had set up an allowance for doubtful accounts for $120,000, calculated, based on their past history, as 60% of the accounts receivable that have been outstanding more than 60 days. (3) You also noticed that they wrote off bad debts of $15,000 during the year. (4) They included in revenue $10,000 received from a customer for goods to be delivered about two months after the year end. This is not a material amount so no adjustment was made at year end to account for this as deferred revenue. (5) You noticed that the professional fees showed legal and accounting fees of $25,000 related to the re-financing of the company’s long-term debt. (6) In miscellaneous expenses you saw that some...

...Financial Management means the efficient and effective management of money (funds) in such a manner as to accomplish the objectives of the organization. It is the specialized functions directly associated with the top management. The significance of this function is not only seen in the 'Line' but also in the capacity of 'Staff' in overall administration of a company. It has been defined differently by different experts in the field. It includes how to raise the capital, how to allocate it i.e. capital budgeting. Not only about long term budgeting but also how to allocate the short term resources like current assets. It also deals with the dividend policies of the share holders. Financial management has emerged as a distinct field of study only in the early part of this century, as a result of consolidation movement and formation of large enterprises. Its evolution may be divided into three phases. The Traditional phase, The Transitional phase and The Modern phase The Traditional Phase: This phase has lasted for about four decades. Its finest expression was shown in the scholarly work of Arthur S. Dewing, in his book tilted the Financial Policy of Corporation in 1920s. In this phase the focus of financial management was on four selected aspects. It treats the entire subject of finance from the outsider's point of view (investment banks, lenders, other) rather than the financial decision maker in the firm. It places much importance of corporation finance and too little...

...Business ethics as defined by Kirk O Hanson is “the study of standards of business behavior, which promote human welfare and the good” (Hanson 2012) In other words, ethics is about how we behave and about the standards that guide our judgements and decisions. Lauren company as we see in this context are professionals and are expected to make good decisions because the decisions they make will affect people’s lives and before a final decision can be made on a particular product, they have to weigh the technical side and the impact of such product like safety, usability, cost and affordability.(McFarland 2012). A critical look into this case study is necessary as it affects Lauren as a person, (who is in a dilemma on if she should allow the production of product that is substandard), her company (with the option of either to re do production risking losing the contract or to pass the device risking their goodwill). The customer company who are just growing their products and at a risk of losing their entire line of production if the device fails and lastly the public or end users who will be sold a product that’s far from what is being advertised. In advising Lauren, I will engage the use of ethics tests to support my opinion. First, I will like apply the ethics utility test by highlighting consequences on each stakeholder. The test asks if the product will be best for all stakeholders. The most affected stakeholders in this case study are the end-users of the product. Passing a product...

...How does the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme promote learning? The International Baccalaureate Diploma programme was established to provide ‘the educational needs of globally mobile students’ (IBO 2012 p.3), allowing them to gain a recognised qualification to allow them access to further education in universities around the world. Beyond these very broad objectives the initial programme was based on three fundamental principles, which outlined the IB’s approach to learning: * to provide a broad education, establishing the basic knowledge and critical thinking skill * to develop international understanding and citizenship * to provide choice within a balanced curriculum to allow the students interests to be fulfilled (ibid). The aim as Peterson has suggested was to not to just provide a place for the ‘acquisition of general knowledge, but the development of the general powers of the mind to operate in a variety of ways of thinking’ (IBO 2012 p.4). This is expressed further in the IB’s Mission Statement which states its desire to create a better world through education, which it claims can best, be achieved through international-mindedness. It adds to this by stating that ‘the International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect (ibid). As with the other programmes, the PYP and MYP, the DP ‘promotes the education...

...a precious yellow commodity once used as money. Illegal couple years ago, now once again is accepted as a potential currency, because of the falling of dollar against the Euro and also the rising of uncertainty in our geopolitical environment. Objective of this study is to develop a forecasting model for predicting gold prices based on two currency price movements and the oil price movements. Following the melt-down of US dollars, investors are putting their money into gold because gold plays an important role as a stabilizing influence for investment portfolios. With the increasing demand of the Gold around the world, we have fund necessary to develop a linear regression model that reflects the structure and pattern of gold market and forecast movement of gold price. The most appropriate approach to the understanding of gold prices is the multiple linear regression (MLR) models. MLR is a study on the relationship between a single dependent variable and one or more independent variable. The fitted of MLR will be used to predict the future gold prices. Variables are defined as follow: Average Gold Prices in USD: GP Exchange rate of Euro to USD: EUROUSD Exchange rate of Japanese Yen to USD: JPYUSD Average oil Prices: OP Introduction Price forecasting is an integral part of economic decision making. Forecasts may be used in numerous ways; for...

...Association (ANA) describes nursing as “direct, goal-oriented to the needs of the individuals, the family, and community during health and illness. (American Nursing Association, 1973, p. 2). Nurses are required to complete certain continuing education courses to be proficient as well as maintain their knowledge base in their areas of profession. There are two common levels of nursing education with their competencies written to guide them to meet approved criteria established by the Board of Nursing. These competencies also ensure the programs prepare graduates who are able to provide safe and complete care to the patients’ and community as a whole. Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) is a two year program which is normally obtained from a community, junior or technical school. The focus is on biology and social sciences and these graduates possess a core of nursing knowledge common to all nursing education routes. The Bachelorette degree (BSN) is offered at colleges and universities for a total of four years. It provides a much broader perspective in the areas of study, focusing more on liberal arts, sciences and nursing theories. (Hill, 2009). Nurses at this level are able to obtain higher positions such as managers and directors. Although there are many differences between ADN and BSN in regards to their education levels, there are also many individual components that differentiate the two. The primary role of nurses of the Associate degree level is to provide direct nursing and coordinate...

...NCLEX exam to qualify for entry level practice. But a BSN is a 4 year degree while and ADN is 2 years. BSN programs put more focus on the science of nursing, integrating theories and ethical decision making. Many hospitals are employing BSNs only in order to achieve ‘Magnet status’, recognizing them for quality patient care and nursing excellence. Nurses that are educated at the BSN level vs the ADN level are better trained for the workforce due to their theory background, their focus on evidence based practice and strong critical thinking skills leading to better patient outcomes. A nurse may wonder why knowledge of theory important while caring for patients at the bedside? As a particular religion guides a person for how they should live their life, theories act as guides for nursing practice. A theory provides a nurse with a tool to help them assist with describing, explaining and predicting why they do what they do. Creasia & Friberg, describe how theories provide frameworks to help give direction and guidance for nurses in their education, research and professional practice. (2011, p. 94) BSN programs provide more emphasis on theory than ADN programs. Magnet hospitals are adopting theories as the basis for their nursing philosophies and seek BSN’s as they have the knowledge and background to understand the concepts. The Grand Canyon University’s College of Nursing Philosophy mentions how nursing theory education can teach “professionalism, ethical decision making, accountability...
