...How to write your Research Problem Statement at WBS (for any queries please contact Terri Carmichael at terri.carmichael@wits.ac.za, Anthony Stacey ay Anthony.stacey@wits.ac.za or your supervisor) Your Research Problem statement is the foundation and focus of your research report. It is a clear, stand‐alone statement that makes explicit what it is you are aiming to discover or establish. Get this right and you are setting yourself up for success. If your Research Problem is poorly worded, unfocused or ambiguous, the rest of your research is likely to go off‐track very early; you will do a great deal of unnecessary reading and writing, losing sight of the big picture (and probably your mind!). Writing your Research Problem Statement 1. First select your research topic, which is the issue or subject area that you intend to investigate – see the document “Finding a Research Topic”, available at www.wbs.ac.za . 2. Describe the business or management problem based on your topic that you intend to research. Do this right at the beginning of your research proposal or report as laid out in the templates (remember to reference any facts that you are basing your research on). This will set the scene for your Research Problem statement, so that you can write a clear, stand alone Research Problem. 3. A Research Problem is not the same as a business problem, ie it is not a “problem” in the normal sense ...

...coordination as an information problem. The case of a divisionalized company Antonio Leotta Assistant Professor of Accounting University of Catania (Italy) Department: Impresa, Culture e Società Email: antonio.leotta@unict.it ABSTRACT The extant literature on inter-organizational control distinguishes the main control problems as coordination problems and appropriation concerns. The present study focuses on coordination problems and is intended to understand the process leading to the hybrid nature of inter-firm coordination modes and the role of information in this process. In a theoretical part, after discussing the main critical assumptions underlying coordination studies, an integrative framework is proposed to conceptualize the coordination process and describe the role of information in this process. In Particular, the framework assumes inter-firm settings as a-centered and a-static, whence the relevance of an interpretive approach where coordination is viewed as a process characterized by dialectic interactions between coordinating actors. The empirical part of the study is aimed at verifying the explanatory power of the framework studying a case of outsourcing relations in a divisionalized company operating in the semi-conductor industry. The case provided useful data giving new insights that enrich the framework. Keywords: coordination; information; system;: process; inter-organizational relations. Revised version July, 5 2011 1. ...GIS and Multi-Criteria Decision Making Debasis Ghosh National Informatics Centre Ministry of Communications and Information Technology Calcutta, India Keywords Abstract Spatial decision making is characterized by problems associated with multiple and conflicting alternatives relating to geographical features and their attributes. As such, the search for the best possible alternative from a large set of such alternatives can be a daunting task. The aim of integrating GIS with Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) is to develop a well-defined process that can scan through such extensive fields of choice to arrive at the best possible solution. Goal Programming is one tool (developed in conjunction with MCDM) that can handle a problem with multiple, conflicting and incommensurable alternatives, and this article explains how the loose coupling technique can integrate MCDM with GIS to assist decision making among competing alternatives. As an example, this methodology has been applied for community development purposes in the Hooghly District of West Bengal, India. 1 Background The inclusion of Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) in spatial environments provides us with the basis for spatial decision support systems. Spatial multi-criteria decision problems typically involve a set of geographically-defined alternatives from which a choice of one or more alternatives is made with respect to a given set of evaluation criteria. Within the framework of spatial analysis, MCDM...

...Introduction The word “hang-out” can either be a verb or a noun. If it is taken as a verb it means the act to spend one’s time idly or in loitering around (Merriam Webster’s Intermediate Dictionary). If it is taken as a noun, it means the PLACE where a group of people stays without doing anything in particular. However, the researcher will be focusing more on the second definition but still consider the first definition, mainly because we have a wide range of places to choose from ; like places inside the University Campus, a friend’s house, a shopping mall or any other place that a certain group of individuals choose. As everyone is inadvertently exposed to strenuous and demanding work either in school/workplace, all of us needs that refreshing and much needed stop to break the monotony of working for/ studying for a long stretch of hours. This is where “hang-outs” come in, when there is a need for relaxing or unwinding at the end of a stressful day/week; inevitably the necessity for a place to relax also arises. Of course as a person either engaged in these activities (studying or working), stress and pressure are usually associated with your workplace or classroom. Therefore anyone can encounter difficulties relaxing in certain place a person associates with stress and pressure. In short the researcher is implying the importance of a hang-out, being in a hang-out does not necessarily mean you have to be in a very far place from your school/workplace but rather, just a...
