...market niche to be successful. They must do this because if they create a new channel that is tailored to a specific audience, however that audience is already satisfied with a cable channel that provides them with the content they want, that new channel will not succeed. Being a college student, I noticed that not many students take full advantage of their university. So if I was a television show producer, and I was deciding to create a new cable channel, it would be geared towards the average student. The channel would be simple; it would provide advice to students who are currently in college, and for high school students who are going to be applying to college. First lets talk about the high school aspect of it. Now generally there will be certain phases in the year where high school students will be applying to universities. With that being said, I know it isn’t easy for a sixteen or seventeen year old to fathom how overwhelming applying to college is, while at the same time trying to handle still taking classes and maybe even extracurricular activities. Maybe there can be a segment that will take up maybe an hour of the channel to discuss some tips for high school students. Some of the things that can be covered is learning how to apply for different universities, if you are going to be applying out of state, and covering the different due dates for particular applications. Another segment could be filling out your federal student aid application and...

College Success

...Brandy Tyree Sharla Yates English 098 June 7th, 2012 Succeeding in College College can be a very difficult time in a persons life. Especially, for those like myself that have been out of school for many years or even for those who had hard times in high school. It is my first quarter in college and I have found that college does not have to be challenging. If one such as myself, just takes the initiative to learn the ways to make it not such a trying time we can become very successful. There are many different study skills that can help us succeed in college. Note taking is one of the skills that I have found very helpfully in my first quarter in college. Taking notes can be used for many different reasons and help in many different ways. Notes can be used for teachings in class that have no related textbook. Writing down things like questions the teacher asks as well as the answers to those questions, these can reveal the teachers goals and objectives of the subject (“Study Tip #09”) . Even if there is a textbook to the teachings, notes can save time in having to go back through a chapter of the book to find the information needed. Writing down everything from titles to organize the notes to new words or concepts, even diagrams and forms can all be very useful. These notes are very helpful to look back at to study for upcoming exams. If one does not take notes all they have is memory to rely on, the odds aren't very good. “Most people can keep information in their...

Meeting My Goals – Research Paper

...Meeting My Goals – Research Paper Jeffery Fholer ITT-Technical Institute Meeting my Goals: Better Note-taking/Studying Techniques To be a more successful college student and in turn a more productive employee, I have found I need to learn more effective note taking/studying techniques. As I started my research for this project, I found there are a million-and-one ways to better study and take good notes. Some are actual studies completed by renowned universities and others are merely guides written by persons based off of their personal experience. The first source I selected “Taking Notes: 5 College Success Tips” was posted by Dennis G. Jerz as submitted to him by one his Technical Writing Students Vivinette K. Dietsche. In her paper, Dietsche outlines five basic principles that are beneficial when it comes to taking notes: go to class prepared, improve your listening skills, develop a note taking method that works for you, pay close attention to content and review and edit your notes. Going to class prepared can be as simple as ensuring you have all the supplies i.e., paper, binders and writing instruments necessary to complete assignments. Also covering the course material before showing up to class will give you a better idea what is going on in the day’s lesson plan. Improving your listening skills is crucial in understanding what is being taught. Dietsche talks about having what we called in the military...

Study groups can also help people rehearse, just seeing how someone else interrupted the learning material. When reading the material ask yourself questions, “what did I just read”, “what does this mean”, also test yourself on the information you have learned. The finally step to this process is to retrieve. I really am not good at this step but it is always room for improvement. Remember the test is full of questions you have already encoded. Make sure you eat a good meal before a big exam, and most of all take a deep breath and don’t panic. The website I found and that I decided to use was from Rasmussen College, and the article was...

Study Habit

...Kornell have explored some of the study habits of college students in a 2007 paper in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review. Research on memory provides a number of important suggestions about the most effective ways to study. One of the most important tips is that students should study by testing themselves rather than just reading over the material. It is also important to study over a period of days rather waiting until the last minute to study. Kornell and Bjork's studies suggest that only about 2/3 of college students routinely quiz themselves, and a majority of students study only one time for upcoming exams. Of course, guidelines from memory research come from studies in idealized circumstances. Researchers bring participants (many of whom are college students) into a lab and ask them to learn material. Perhaps the recommendations drawn from these studies are not that helpful for real students dealing with real courses. To address this question, Marissa Hartwig and John Dunlosky related the study habits of college students to their grade point average (GPA) in a 2012 paper in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review. They asked students about a number of study behaviors. They also had students report their current GPA. The students with the highest GPA were more likely to study by testing themselves than the students with lower GPAs. What is the most effective way to test you, though? It turns out that most students report using flashcards, and the use of flashcards...

First Experience in Enc 1101

...semester of college. It is a general requirement for every student at MDC and is geared to help those who aspire to become a professional graduate one-day. Since I picked ENC 1101 to be one of my first semester college classes, it's been a difficult course for me. My lack of grammar knowledge, experience writing essays and organizing ideas are the three factors that made this college class challenging. Even though it's been hard on me, I now know how to write essays the right way and also how to organize my ideas so I have a clear vision of what I'll be writing about. This is really important to me because learning how to write properly will not only help me pass ENC 1101, but it will help succeed in other classes, life, and my future career.   My ENC 1101 Professor Walter Hernandez not only motivated us to become better writers but also shared with us important tips regarding how to write like a college writer. He would always have a positive attitude, making the class amusing and enjoyable. The first week of school, Professor Hernandez showed the class "The ENC 1101 Survival Guide" which is a document containing essays written by Miami Dade College students that represent how his students made it through his class by becoming better writers. Therefore every time I need to write an essay, I always take a quick look at one of the writings in the guide in order to obtain ideas and tips on how to make my writing perfect.  One of my favorite essays from the survival guide is "Tips to Succeed...
