...Running head: TEEN SUICIDE IS AN EPIDEMIC Teen Suicide October 20, 2012 Introduction Every year, thousands of youth die in the Unites States and one million worldwide. Not from cancer or motor vehicle accidents by their own hand. For whatever reason they make that choice that they no longer want to live, and they take their own life. According to statistic, suicide has been known to be the third leading cause of death for young persons between the age of fifteen to twenty-four years; and it is the eleventh cause of death for persons of all ages in the United States. Many people think these are remote incidents, but they are not. Teen suicide is an epidemic that keeps on growing on daily basis. According to the estimate by the center for disease and prevention, annually, over five hundred thousand teenagers from age 15 to 24 will attempt to kill themselves and about five thousand of these teenagers succeeded (National Institute of Mental Health, 2002). Theses estimate indicated that the number of teenagers that committed suicide (five thousand) is synonymous to the number of people whom the cause of death was cancer or homicide. The number of teenagers, who committed suicide over the years, has outnumbered the number of teenagers who were killed by homicides by at least ratio three to two. That is ridiculous! To some people it sound unbelievable but as we continue to read various articles and continue to expose these occurrences on the internet...

...adolescence to feel that suicide is the only way out. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens between the ages of 15-19(Ball & Binder, 2008. Pg.1132). Too often the adolescence may feel that they are unable to cope with every day’s stressors partly due to the lack of appropriate skills and outlets, adequate support systems, or available mental health interventions. Depression suicide and substance abuse emerge as life becomes overwhelming and the future unmanageable (Edelman, & Mandel, 2010). There are warning signs of the possible suicidal ideations in the adolescence. The distressed adolescence tends to give clues, both verbally and nonverbally. Some of the warning signs may be the expression of hopelessness a preoccupation with death or an increasing rage or anger (Health Promotion Throughout the Life Span list several other warning signs on page 558). Any single clue may mean nothing but, in this writers opinion serves as a red flag and the idea should be taken seriously. Suicide threats should never be ignored, and the adolescent who is thinking harming or possibly harming themselves should never be left alone (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2006, Shaw et al., 2005). Adolescent suicide can be prevented. When you suspect that an adolescent may be or is suicidal an immediate intervention should be made. Programs such as Arizona Suicide Prevention Coalition at www.azspc.org can offer help to teens that are thinking of suicide. A primary intervention...

Preventing suicide is a serious public health problem, there are lasting effects on the individual, families and the community. Suicide prevention can be simple ways to reduce the risk and promote resilience and coping. The prevention of suicide can happen within society, the individual, family and the social environment. The most “effective prevention strategy would be the need to promote the awareness of suicide, and to promote prevention, resilience and the commitment to social changes” (Anonymous, 2016). A suicide death has a profound effect on anyone, but when the death is a teenager there are physical and mental effects. Individuals react to the types of death. When these deaths happen, we as a...

...What I consider a problem in the Anderson community as a body is the high percentage of self-harm and depression in teens. Teenagers have a 20% chance of having depression. According to Physiologist higher self-harm of 14-20-years-olds self-harm. Teen suicide is the third preeminent cause of death 10-24 years of age. These statistics need to be decreased before it gets critical. Furthermore, before we have numerous more adults than teens. There are two main predicaments. One of the foremost predicaments is that no one comes forth when their friend or child is depressed they do not arrange anything. Suddenly they assume another will go further. When a child/ teen does kill himself. They always say 'I never regarded it occurring.' 'They always...

...Draft for Suicide Prevention Paper by Mariegold H. Bulquerin-Robles. Suicide is the third leading cause of deaths among 10-19 year olds in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with males (81%) more common than females (19%). Foremost risk factor for suicide among youths is mental disorders, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed, with depression as the most common of the mental disorders associated with suicide. Other risk factors include substance or alcohol abuse, exposure to suicide or history thereof, exposure to violence, impulsive behavior and life-changing stress. The stressors that most youths encounter that may overwhelm their ability to cope include disciplinary problems, interpersonal loss, family violence, sexual orientation confusion, physical and sexual abuse, and being the victim of bullying. Any combinations of these risk factors increase the likelihood of suicide among youths, and identification of these factors help chances to identify those at risk. Warning signs such as changes in behavior, social withdrawal, erratic sleeping and eating patterns, low self-esteem, poor hygiene and loss of interest in personal upkeep should be paid attention, and talking or writing about dying or killing one’s self, along with prior suicide attempts are the foremost warning sign that signals that one is contemplating suicide, and should not be ignored. Primary prevention for suicide includes educating parents, educators, coaches...

...Teen Depression Stigma It is proven that one in five teens experience depression. Depression is a condition where a person feels hopeless, not motivated, or not interested in life, lasting at least 2 weeks or longer. There is an urgency to be concerned for the reason that suicide is the third leading cause of death in teens and fifteen percent of teens have genuinely considered suicide. According to Amy Sutton 55% of the population without depression don’t consider it to be an actual disease. This stigma is making it close to impossible for teens to say they are experiencing depression. Some people say “it is just a phase”, “kids cannot get depression”, or “people with depression are crazy”. The contributing factors of rational thought,...

...What is Depression? Depression is a medical illness that causes a constant feeling of hopelessness and lack of interest. Depression affects how the person feels, behaves and thinks. This can lead to emotional and physical problems. Typically, people with depression find it hard to go about their day-to-day activities, and may also feel that life is not worth living. However, depression is not uniform. Signs and symptoms may be experienced by some sufferers and not by others. How severe the symptoms are, and how long they last depends on the individual person and their illness. Warning signs include symptoms such as: constant feeling of sadness, anxiety, and emptiness , a general feeling of pessimism, feelings of restlessness or hopelessness, loss of interest in activities, low energy or fatigue, disturbed sleep patterns, and in extreme cases suicidal thoughts. Many people are ashamed to ask for help because they are afraid of what other people might think. However, depression is a common illness for which there are many treatments. Types of Depression There are many different types of depression. Events in your life can trigger some, while others are caused by chemical changes in your brain. A few examples include: Major Depression, in which you feel depressed most of the time for most days of the week. Bipolar depression, in which you have high and low extremes. During the low phase, patients have the symptoms of major depression, while in the high phase they exhibit mania...

...teenagers have considered suicide? Today in America teen deaths have been on an incline. More teens have died in today’s society than ever before. But today’s society is the main cause of these deaths. These deaths by teens are caused by what goes on around them in their environment. Teen suicide is one of many dangerous killers known to man today. Kids from the age range of 10-15 have thought of if not attempted to commit suicide. Teen suicide is thought of as a shameful and disgusting gesture, but parents, teachers, aunties, cousins, and grandparents do not take the time out to look deeper to what really causes teens to commit suicide. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the number of teen suicide has been increasing in the past year because some teens problems are overlooked and they do not know how to cope with what is going on around them. Teens who commit suicide usually suffer from depression, obesity, bullying, and home based issues. Teens today commit suicide in the presence of grave circumstances. If things in our society were more openly addressed such as homosexuality, bullying, personal infatuation, appearance, drugs, and obesity more than likely teens would be comfortable to talk about their problems instead of resulting to suicide due to the internal pain in which they suffer from. ...Position Paper Teen Suicide 04 November 2014 Instructor: Course: Identification of the Issue The term suicide is defined as the intentional taking of your own life, or by deliberate inaction, allowing your life to be taken (according to www.mentalhelp.net). The ways people commit suicide varies, but the act of suicide itself remains the same. Some people overdose on prescription pills, slit their wrists, shoot themselves the list goes on. In 2010, The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that suicide is the third leading cause of death for college aged youth and ages 12-18. Teenagers experience low self esteem issues as a result of peer pressure, bullying, love lost, stress and confusion within the family whether it is due to divorce, financial uncertainty, domestic abuse or substance abuse. And for these reasons teens may associate suicide with being the solution to their problem. Causes for the Problem The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collected data in 2012 (most recent year for which data was obtained), 40,600 suicides were reported, making suicide the 10th leading cause of death for Americans. In that year someone in the United States died by suicide every 12.9 minutes. Shockingly, after cancer and heart disease, suicide accounts for more years of life lost than any other cause of death. Statistics also shows that males are twice more likely to commit suicide than females. As far as ethnicity rates,...

...responsibility of protecting this future is placed on the shoulders of military forces. This heavy burden of “prosperity” and “preservation” could be proven to be responsible for the slow destruction of the vitality of the youth and soldiers in this country. Suicide, death caused by intentional self- directed injuries, has been reported by CDC as part of the top ten leading causes of death in the United States of America as of 2009. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth in the age range of 10 to 24 which results in the average of 4600 lives of youth lost yearly (CDC, 2014). This fatal behavior is also the third leading cause of death in the U.S. military forces. (Mitchell, 2012) The military suicide rates have surpassed the civilian suicide rates averaging 164 soldiers’ suicide related deaths reported by the Office of the Chief of Legislative Liaison in 2012. (Mitchell, 2012). What are the major causes or risk factors of suicide? Are there solutions to this major dilemma? This paper will attempt to highlight some causes as well as some possible solutions to slow down the constant rise of suicidal behavior of these two groups. There are quite a few risk factors for suicidal behavior among teens. One of the most popular is depression, a form of mental illness. (Cooper, 2011) Depression could be linked but not limited to...
