Rachel’s Secret, a historical-fiction novel, based on the Kishinev Pogrom, about murder, anti-semitism, hate, and having the strength to overcome it all. Written by Shelly Sanders and published in 2012, Sanders takes us into the eyes of a Jew living in pre-revolutionary Russia, told in a way that would allow teenagers to understand the struggles since a teenager is the main character. The book is written very well overall, with a few minor grammar errors here and there which don’t take away from the subject matter itself.
The book handled this serious matter very well, taking a lot of care to not make light of the situation. It really goes to show just how hated Jewish people back then, with something as simple as a lie leading to the deaths
