First Heart-Lung Machine was used for open heart surgery 1953: John H. Gibbon Jr. was the first successful human-heart surgery assisted by the heart-lung machine. You take the arteries and veins from the body and it oxygenates and pumps blood to the heart from a machine. The idea was to take blood out and push oxygen gas into, and send it back out, so the machine could keep feeding the body while the surgeon was doing his work.
Developed mainly by using a lot of animals for their research. “John Gibbon had been moved by the death of a patient during cardiac surgery. Convinced the patient would have survived if their blood circulation had been artificially maintained, he began to investigate the possibility of building an external device that

Jackson County Hospital Case Study

...Jackson County Hospital’s predominant goal consists of obtaining a certificate of need (CON) for open-heart surgery. However, their application has been rejected due to the following nonconformities with the CON application. The first nonconformity exists with §1715 (1). The capacity utilization of the open-heart surgery by the 12th quarter in a 12-month period should be at least 50% which means Jackson County Hospital needs at least 200 procedures Harris, D. (n.d.). Instead, Jackson County Hospital projected a capacity utilization of 195 procedures which does not meet the 50% requirement Harris, D. (n.d.). This means that Jackson County Hospital needs to project at least 50 procedures in the 12th quarter instead of the previously projected 45. The second nonconformity exists with §1715 (5) due to Doctor’s Hospital’s historical utilization not being high enough in order to open another open-heart surgery service in the same geographical area Harris, D. (n.d.). In order to open an additional open-heart surgery within the same area as Jackson County Hospital, the current facility that has an open-heart surgery needs to have a utilization of at least 80%...

Heart Valve Surgery

...Heart Valve Surgery Once a valve problem has been diagnosed and surgery scheduled, you’ll have some things to do. Some preparations will help make your surgery go smoothly. Some will help you get set up for your return home from the hospital. And others will help you feel more at ease. Your doctor will talk with you about the risks. Write down all your questions in advance so you don’t forget to ask them. The Week Before Surgery Steps you take before your surgery can help make both the surgery and recovery go smoothly. Follow your doctor’s instructions. • Ask your doctor about scheduling any dental work you might need. Dental work could let bacteria into your bloodstream, which can cause infection on a new valve. • Give your doctor a list of every medication you take, including supplements and over-the-counter products. Your doctor may have you stop taking some of them or start taking others before surgery. • If you smoke, quit right away. You will do better during and after surgery. • Arrange for an adult family member or friend to drive you home from the hospital. Have a helper available for your first week or two at home. • Prepare and freeze food or arrange to have food brought in while you recover. • Make adjustments around your home to simplify movements, such as reducing the need to climb stairs. The Day Before Surgery • You may be asked to wash with special soap the night before surgery. The morning of surgery, don’t use deodorant, lotion, or perfume. • Don’t...

Has Society Benefited from the Rapid Advancement of Technology?

...1320 Composition I 05/04/14 Has Society Benefited from the Rapid Advancement of Technology? Technology has interwoven itself so deeply into our everyday lives that it would be hard to imagine life without it. Militaries around the world have benefited from the advances of technology, especially Hitler’s Armies during World War II. Hitler’s scientists created the rocket with the intention of firing missiles at the U.S.; now rockets can also be used to launch space shuttles into orbit. There have also been many technological achievements in the field of medicine over the last century; from creating vaccines for potentially deadly diseases like small pox and polio to successfully performing the first open heart surgery. Advances like these eventually lead to robots and machines playing a bigger part in operating rooms around the world. Some of the biggest advances in technology have probably involved things in our personal lives like smart phones, computers, social media, and HDTVs. Technology’s rapid progression, especially in medicine, military, and even in our personal lives over the past 100 years has greatly benefited our society. Do wars drive technological advancement? According to an article by a journalist named Jonathan Strickland, it does and, unfortunately, I couldn’t agree more. Strickland goes on to state, “In general, wars tend to accelerate technological development to adapt tools for the purpose of solving specific military needs. Later, these military tools...

Observation Of A Chest X-Ray Experiment

...A chest X-ray is a very common and non-invasive radiology test on the internal organs. In fact, a chest X-ray is usually among the first procedures a patient must undergo if there are any suspicions of lung or heart disease. The x-ray can reveal a lot about the body such as the condition of the lungs and ribs, the blood vessels, and the possible heart-related lung problems. In my observation, a physician at a local urgent care clinic performed a chest X-ray on a patient. The physician ordered the chest X-ray in order to take a closer look at the patient’s chest cavity. However, if the physician discovered any potentially serious issues at the Urgent Care, the x-rays would be sent to larger hospitals and clinics to get reviewed by a radiologist....

The Effects Of Teenage Smoking

...Why is it that teenagers smoke when they are reminded almost every day the consequences of this bad habit leads to? Tobacco was first considered to be dangerous to health in 1602, as an anonymous English author published an essay titled Worke of Chimney Sweepers, which stated that illnesses often seen in chimney sweepers were caused by soot and that tobacco may have similar effects. This was one of the earliest recognized instances of smoking being related to ill health. Cigarette making machines were developed in the second half of the 1800s. The first such machines produced about 200 cigarettes per minute, whereas today’s machines produce about 9,000 per minute (A Brief History of Smoking, 2014).Hence, teenagers are becoming addicted to smoking...

Organs Transplant

...a donor site to another location on the person's own body, to replace the recipient's damaged or absent organ. The emerging field of regenerative medicine is allowing scientists and engineers to create organs to be re-grown from the person's own cells (stem cells, or cells extracted from the failing organs). Organs and/or tissues that are transplanted within the same person's body are called auto grafts. Transplants that are recently performed between two subjects of the same species are called allograft. Allograft can either be from a living or cadaveric source. Organs that can be transplanted are the heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas, intestine, and thymus. Tissues include bones, tendons (both referred to as musculoskeletal grafts), cornea, skin, heart valves, nerves and veins. Worldwide, the kidneys are the most commonly transplanted organs, followed by the liver and then the heart. Cornea and musculoskeletal grafts are the most commonly transplanted tissues; these outnumber organ transplants by more than tenfold. Organ donors may be living, brain dead, or dead via circulatory death. Tissue may be recovered from donors who die of circulatory death, as well as of brain death – up to 24 hours past the cessation of heartbeat. Unlike organs, most tissues (with the exception of corneas) can be preserved and stored for up to five years, meaning they can be "banked". Transplantation raises a number of bioethical issues, including the definition of death, when and how consent should...

...Task #1 Key assessments that should be done to a patient upon arrival to the emergency department help assess and identify the patient's condition or status. First I would assess Mrs. Baker by using the stethoscope to listen to heart, lungs, and abdomen, at the same time checking her body and skin to see is there are any abnormalities. Next, I would check Mrs. Baker's neurological status to see if she recalls what happened and where she is at that time. I would also ask her about her health history and check to see which medications she takes at home and if there's any new medications that she's started on. Then I would ask her if she's having pain. However if Mrs. Baker is unresponsive, I would assess her facial, body expression, and behavior to determine if she's having pain. IV access would be started, in case Mrs. Baker needs more fluids or iv medications. Next, I would ask the nursing assistant to take the patient's vital signs to see if there's any major issues with her vitals, especially her blood pressure. I would also ask lab to get stat labs for the patient with an order from the attending physician. Labs would include, stat CBC, CMP, and ABG's. The CBC would help to determine if she's having any bleeding, anemic, or having an infection. The CMP would help to determine if there's an electrolyte imbalance. The ABG's would help to determine if she's having a respiratory or a metabolic reaction, and if she's acidic or alkalitic. ABG results will also help...

Berlin Heart Research Paper

...Berlin Heart and its effects When a child has been determined to need a heart transplant, doctors give the parents all available options to better the child’s survival rate. The most recent common options are the Berlin Heart and ECMO. Even though both seem to provide the same result, medically they are extremely different and can provide a wide range of different results. Parents who are force to make these decisions, tend to question the effects that the two would have on their child. Whether it is the physical, emotional or the overall health effects, the decision is still a hard one to make. With the clock ticking and a life in the hands of medicine, the decision has to be reached immediately. The Berlin Heart is an external device that helps the right ventricle of the heart pump blood to the body. With surgery, Doctors implant tubes to both the left and right ventricle of the heart. These tubes are connected to the Berlin Heart and Pump to assist with the flow of blood and oxygen to both the lungs and heart. See below diagram [pic]Figure 1. 1. The deoxygenated blood flows from the body into the right atrium. ( Red Line) 2. Since the right ventricle can not pump blood into the lungs, the blood goes into the Berlin Heart (yellow circle). 3. The blood is pumped out of the Berlin Heart and goes into the pulmonary artery (Purple Line) and into the lungs. 4. Once the blood is oxygenated in the lungs, it flows into the left atrium of the heart. (Brown Line) ...

The evening before my father’s surgery they had him take a shower or bedside bath. They told him to use a special soap on his chest and legs. This special soap kills the bacteria on your skin and helps to prevent infection after surgery. The day of his surgery, he will have his body hair removed using a special "clipper" made especially for this purpose. After the hair is removed they told him to take another shower or bedside bath using a special soap. After he had cleaned with the special soap, the nurse then inserted an intravenous (IV), and gave him an antibiotic medication that will be given with fluid through the soft tube. He was not able to eat or drink anything after midnight the evening before surgery. However, the doctor wanted him to take some of his medications the morning of his surgery. The doctor will tell you which medications to take with a sip of water. Since he was admitted to the hospital overnight the nurse had brought him these medications to take with a sip of water.
