The Effect of Higher Education on the Risk of Unemployment

...Introduction According to the U.S. Department of Labor, unemployment rates have increased to 7.9 percent. The unemployment rate can be defined as the number of people actively looking for a job as to the percentage of the labor force. The market share of higher education jobs compared to all U.S. jobs continued to increase and a trend has persisted for several years. Individuals who complete educational programs possess the qualities employers are seeking. These strong qualities include the willingness to learn, initiative, and organizational abilities. By pursuing a high level of education that is consistent with the interests and abilities, the career goals are likely to be reached. March. http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/labor/218525-faa-why-we-should-invest-today-in-airports-inc) With the latest Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) forecast predicting a doubling of passengers and cargo by 2030, the current funding system is not up to the job of ensuring airports will have the infrastructure they need to handle such dramatic increases in traffic. This will have far-reaching consequences. Commercial airports are powerful economic engines, generating 10.5 million jobs and $1.2 trillion for the U.S. economy, according to a new Airports Council International-North America study. Across the country, workers and businesses count on local airports to attract investment and move people and goods around the world. Since 2001, the total number of jobs associated with airports has increased by more than 50 percent. ...Richard Nixon. What started out as a botched robbery at the Democratic Reelection headquarters would later become know for bringing down the Presidency. The American public would be able to see and hear firsthand what actually occurred in the Whitehouse behind closed doors, because of the national media that it created and the broadcasting of the Watergate Senate Hearings. This would bring to light the illegal activity that occurred during this time affecting many and changing politics as they were known. This paper will discuss the events that lead up to the Senate hearings and the fall of an American President. The careers that were made and the ones destroyed. The outcome and how it affected the American public and the future of politics. WATERGATE 3 WATERGATE At a time when the American population was dealing with the devastation of the Vietnam War and the loss of many loved ones a robbery at the Watergate hotel hit the papers. They were caught with more $3,500 in cash and high-end surveillance equipment. Huhthe Role of Celebrity Endorsements in Politics:

...Oprah, Obama, and the 2008 Democratic Primary Craig Garthwaite Department of Economics University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742 Vmail: 202-746-0990 Email: cgarthwaite@gmail.com Tim Moore Department of Economics University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742 Vmail: 301-442-1785 Email: moore@econ.umd.edu August 2008 Abstract Candidates in major political contests are commonly endorsed by other politicians, interest groups and celebrities. Prior to the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary, Barack Obama was endorsed by Oprah Winfrey, a celebrity with a proven track record of influencing her fans’ commercial decisions. In this paper, we use geographic differences in subscriptions to O! – The Oprah Magazine and the sale of books Winfrey recommended as part of Oprah's Book Club to assess whether her endorsement affected the Primary outcomes. We find her endorsement had a positive effect on the votes Obama received, increased the overall voter participation rate, and increased the number of contributions received by Obama. No connection is found between the measures of Oprah's influence and Obama's success in previous elections, nor with underlying local political preferences. Our results suggest that Winfrey’s endorsement was responsible for approximately 1,000,000 additional votes for Obama. Summary Taxes and Business Strategy

...Summary Taxes and Business Strategy Chapter 1: Introduction to tax strategy The objective of the book is to provide you with a framework that is useful for thinking about how taxes affect decisions, both at the individual level and within organizations. The book adopts a global planning approach to taxes and business strategy. A. The three key themes underlying our approach to effective tax planning 1. Effective tax planning requires the planner to consider the tax implications of a proposed transaction for all parties to the transaction. 2. Effective tax planning requires the planner to consider all taxes. 3. Effective tax planning requires the planner to recognize that taxes represent only one amount many business costs and that all costs must be considered in the planning process. B. Difference between effective tax planning and tax minimization Effective tax planning (ETP): considering the role of taxes when implementing the decision rule of maximizing after-tax returns, but also consideration of other costs that arise in a world of costly contracting where implementation of tax-minimizing strategies may introduce significant costs along nontax dimensions. Effective tax planning is part of a larger problem: the efficient design of organizations. Contractual perspective: contracts specify the rights of various parties to make decisions and to receive cash flows in differing circumstances. The tax-related cash flows specified by contracts affect...
