Therefore punks understand civilization as a toxic mechanism used by government. Secondly, punks also believe in commodity fetishism, which can be defined as how a food was produced, transported, and manipulated. To a punk, the degree to which food is made into the finished product is the degree to which it is corrupt. Therefore, a lot of punks are vegetarian or vegan because they do not support animal exploitation or branded foods. In order to get this raw, unbranded, vegan food punks will not pay for it the way someone normally would because as stated, they do not support the norms of the bigger system. In order to show such distrust in the system punks find other mechanisms to get food. Such mechanisms are trading for food, restoring the purity of food by getting it directly from the farmers rather than a corporate supermarket, making the food themselves, or stealing or dumpster diving.
