Despite the high rate at which the states are legalizing marijuana, there exists only little scientific evidence to support such laws. According to Bostwick (2012), most of the state cannabis legalization policies are based on ‘political ideologies and gamesmanship’. Lack of existing medical evidence on the benefits and effects of marijuana is seen as a satisfying factor that encourages its continued use. The little research done in the mid-20th century indicated that the cannabinoids presents in cannabis can be used in curing various illnesses.
After the establishment of the Controlled Substance Act, the scientific research on marijuana became more difficult due to the existence of several federal barriers. The restrictions have made it difficult

Pros and Cons Marijuanna

... TV shows or even in chatting with friends is the legalization of marijuana. It is a polemical issue in our society with a lot of pros and cons. However, the main issue in this debate is why marijuana is still prohibited? The legalization will be the solution for several social problems that we have in our society, such as traffic, murders and everything that is involved in this illegal market. Serious dependence is the first argument that people against the legalization use in a debate. They say that marijuana causes dependence, and this dependence could interfere in social life of users, for example, school and job performance. First of all, there are research comproving that marijuana is less harmful to human health than most of other banned drugs, such as cocaine or crack. Furthermore, marijuana is less harmful than the main two legal drugs that we have nowadays. The dependence of tobacco and the changes in our mind of alcohol are countless times more harmful than marijuana. The main point in this discussion more than the dependence, is the social problems that the illegal commerce of marijuana causes. The current ways adopted by the government to combat the traffic are not working. The government does not know how to stop this illegal commerce. It happens because even with the legal prohibition the consumers do not stop to consume drugs and it does not stop trafficker to produce and sell illegal marijuana. In summary, only the combat against the crime is not the right...

...document here. The abstract is typically a short summary of the contents of the document. Type the abstract of the document here. The abstract is typically a short summary of the contents of the document.] | There has been major news forming around the legalization of marijuana in Colorado. Medical marijuana has been effective in Colorado since 2000. Now marijuana is legal for recreational use for people 21 and up. Many rules and regulations follow the legalization of marijuana. Many people of Colorado fear this legalization, where others are totally for it and think it will help boost Colorado’s economy. I have found many positives and negatives regarding the legalization of marijuana. According to Sherry Robinson, a syndicated columnist with the Daily times, Colorado approved medical marijuana in 2000, and it's now a $200 million industry that pays more than $5 million a year in state sales taxes. The state and cities are now salivating over potential revenues from recreational marijuana sales but must find the equilibrium between a "good tax" and one that drives cannabis sales underground. Now that Colorado has legalized marijuana for recreational use, it will boost the economy even more. A huge percentage of what is made will be going to the school system in Colorado. This will make a huge difference in the education system. This is a huge benefit that many parents and teachers are looking forward to. The legalization of marijuana will help create many jobs for Colorado residents...

...Should Marijuana be Legalized? BCOM/275 November 26, 2012 Should marijuana be legalized? Throughout the years, the topic should marijuana be legalized is often heavily debated.  For many years the use of marijuana was forbidden and outlawed in the United States, but in more recent years marijuana seems to be becoming accepted. Scientist has found many useful applications for marijuana. Recently, here in the United States, many states have approved legislation for marijuana for medical purposes. Most recently, two states Colorado and Washington have passed referendums that will allow people over the age of 21 recreational use of marijuana without the penalty of a criminal offense. These two states will oversee the use of marijuana for its constituents similar to how alcohol is controlled. Whereas, the government at the state level in Colorado and Washington is in favor for the legalization and passed legislation for the legalization of marijuana, the federal government has not. This causes legal, moral, and ethical issues and begs that questions; should marijuana be legalized? Pros of Legalization One benefit of the legalization of marijuana would be the ability for state and local governments to tax the legal production and sale of it. Currently, because marijuana is illegal the sale of it is not taxed so the local, state, and federal governments do not reap any of the benefits of this “$10.5 billion dollar industry” (Miron, 2005, p.4). In a report written by Jeffrey A....

Marijuana Legaliization

...Compare and Contrast Social Policy As per the documentary aired last class, please provide a summary of the two positions associated with illicit drug legislation as applied to marijuana. While there are a number of reasons to support de-criminalization there are also pressing reasons to maintain the current status quo. Further, who profits (has something to gain) in either circumstance? Reasons to make legal: Legalization would enable us to regulate the market, determine a much lower price and remove users need to make money through crime. Our legal system would be freed up and our prison population rate would be dramatically reduced, saving billions in the long run. Through the legalization of marijuana, we wouldn't have to worry about smuggling from Mexico and that would be one less job in the hands of law enforcement. In this circumstance, the government would benefit by saving tons of money. In the process of making marijuana legal, it would not be sold on the streets as much either. Just as it is in Colorado, stores would pop up on the market, giving users easy access, eliminating the need for individuals to sell on the streets. Reasons to keep illegal: Keeping marijuana illegal would allow law enforcement to not give into smugglers. If we make marijuana legal just because it is so widely used, it can be viewed as the government giving into lawbreakers. Since there is a very strong correlation between guns and drugs, that is another reason it should stay illegal...

Marijuana Use

...Texas History 2306 Legalizing The Use of Marijuana in Texas To Be or Not To Be There is always a big debate over the legalization of recreational use of the commonly known all natural drug marijuana. In my opinion the debate stems from the stigma that has always been associated with marijuana use. That stigma, unto which was onset in the early 1960’s from the “ Hippy” generation has carried over into modern day, thus making the use of weed, marijuana, gongja. Reefer, or chronic as a substance that is destined to lead you to destruction. It would be easy for me to reference a lot of different resources when addressing this subject, but since I have so much hands on experience in the use of cannabis, I will start with myself and my history of the use of marijuana and why I feel like it should be legalized. My use of marijuana started at the age of 12. It was at a point in my life as to choose which side of peer pressure that I would submit to. I initially tried cigarettes, as a matter of fact a variety of brands, none to which I can actually say suited my taste. My first experience with marijuana took me to a place of calmness. My biggest fear of my first smoke was “What are the side effects?”. Needless to say my side effects were tolerable very to me, and damaging to any ones kitchen that I was in, because I was extremely hungry and very inquisitive, during mediocre conversations. This is a brief summary of my personal history and now I will emphasize...

Marijuana Policy in the Usa

...Marijuana Policy Ashford University: POL 201 Marijuana Policy A topic that has been in and out of the news a lot over the past 20 plus years and has had an immense amount of public opinion either for or against it, is the legalization of marijuana in the United States. This is a product that is illegal in 48 states for general recreational use and illegal in 26 states for medicinal use. But our country did not always have this sort of sentiment toward this plant. Marijuana is the mixture of dried and shredded flowers and leaves that come from the hemp plant. In 1619 legislation was passed in Virginia that required every farmer to grow hemp, and it was even used as legal tender in three states. By the 1900’s the drug became associated with immigrants and an anti-drug campaign was started. By 1931, 29 states had outlawed marijuana, and in 1937 the Marijuana Tax Act made is illegal under federal law to possess it (Marijuana timeline). In 1996 California became the first state to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes and as of July 7, 2014 New York became the 23rd state in the U.S. to do the same. A survey found on USAtoday.com stated “that in 7.3% of Americans 12 or older regularly used marijuana in 2012(Leger, 2013),” that is approximately 23.9 million people.” The stance that the federal government is holding firm onto is that marijuana is illegal, and is a schedule 1 controlled drug. There are many advocates in the legalization of this drug deemed by the federal government...

Credibility: As a non-marijuana smoker I still feel, from past experiences and research, that the legalization of marijuana is very important. Preview: Since the year 1970 we have been wasting tax payers money, as well as law enforcements time and effort to fight something that has the potential to help so many. Body Problem Marijuana, also known as Cannabis, comes from the plant Cannabis Sativa. The main active ingredient is THC or tetrahydrocannibol. When cannabis is consumed for recreational purposes it creates a euphoric and relaxing high that according to "Medical News Today" has both physiological and psychoactive effects. Marijuana is hands down the the world's most popular drug. According to Attorney Bruce Block, "Marijuana use dates all the way back to 7,000 B.C. however widespread use of it recreationally didn't become popular until alcohol was banned during the Prohibition Era. In 1937 the government used fear, and false stories of violence to completely outlaw it. Since then, almost all of the theories used to ban marijuana have been proven false. By making marijuana a legal, taxed, and regulated product, it will result in a sharp decrease in drug related crime and a sharp increase in government income. Solution The Plan: My proposed solution is to model new laws in...
