"She Walks in Beauty" is a poem written in 1814 by Lord Byron. One of Lord Byron’s most famous, it is a lyric poem that describes a woman of much beauty and elegance. TITLE: What’s Up With the Title? We usually refer to this poem simply by its first line, "She Walks in Beauty." But the first line does more than introduce the subject of the poem – a beautiful woman. The first line of the poem (and therefore the title) is an apparently conscious echo of the famous sonnet by William Shakespeare, "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day" (Sonnet 18). Except, of course, instead of comparing the beautiful woman to a "summer's day," Byron compares her to "night." So he's not just setting up a contrast between night and day, he's also setting up a contrast between himself and Shakespeare. As i entered the main theatre i was pleased to see a professional looking setup wih high rows and comfortable seats. i found my row and seat as it was printed on the ticket, sitting next to a mother and daughter. I sat there, somewhat uncomfortable sitting next to strangers with many open seats but it was assigned. Later, i found out seating was general when the family moved. It didnt distract at all from the enjoyment i was about to have, but it made for an interesting start. 2. Theater Description: size, stage type, seating arrangement, etc. The theater was located inside Withycombe Hall on Oregon State University Campus. It was the main theater so the seating was rather large. The capacity was probably around 400-500 full, however there were a little over 100 when i attended. The seats were typical theater seats, so it was as comfortable as anyone would expect, offerng move room and less obstructed views than in movie theaters. ...W.B. Yeats's "The Second Coming" W.B. Yeats' poem "The Second Coming" was written in 1919, just one year after WWI ended. The beginning of this poem reflects on how evil has taken over the minds of good Christians, and the world has turned into chaos. It is apparent that Yeats believes that a Second Coming is at hand, and he spends the last half of the poem discussing what that Second Coming could look like. Turning and turning in the widening gyre (line 1) Yeats imagines the world in a cyclical sphere known a gyre (shape of a cone). In Yeats' note on the text, he states that "the end of an age, which always receives the revelation of the character of the next age, is represented by the coming of one gyre to its place of greatest expansion and of the other to that of its greatest contraction" (2036). Yeats believes that the two thousand years of Christianity will be coming to an end, and after a violent reversal a new age will take its place. The widening part of the gyre is supposed to connote anarchy, evil, and the loss of innocence. The falcon cannot hear the falconer; (2) The falconer in this analogy is most likely God (or Jesus), and the falcon is the follower (or devotee). Humanity can no longer hear the word of God, because it is drowned out by all of chaos of the widening gyre.
