...ICPNA For all you ladies out there who stand a little taller when you purchase those expensive pumps, or gain a bit of control with a new silk top, fear not. New research from Northwestern University validates the power that comes with clothes, and the price tag you might associate with it. We’ve all heard the old adage, “You are what you eat.”‘ Well, you might add, ‘You are what you wear.” Northwestern’s research introduced the term “enclothed cognition” to describe the connection between clothing and psychology. “Clothes cognition is really about becoming the clothes themselves and having them direct who you are and how you act in the world,” study author Adam Galinsky said. ”When we are putting on a suit, we are not only giving impressions to other people, but we are also giving an impression to ourselves. We feel the rich, silk fabric on our arms; that allows us to take on the characteristics of those clothes.” The researchers examined the phenomenon by having participants wear a white lab coat, describing it as a doctor’s coat. “When they put it on and saw it as a doctor’s coat, they became more attentive,” Galinsky said. “But if they put on the same coat and we call it an artist’s coat, a painter’s coat, then you didn’t get the affect.” Galinsky, a professor of ethics and decision in management, said this is because doctors need to ” be attentive” and by wearing the coat you take on a “symbolic meaning of what it means to be a doctor, attentive and smarter...

...a mass production of clothing was made fashionable and available to more people for lower prices. This encouraged more people to wear more stylish clothes which are why we are wearing what we are today. Clothing is made out of all types of material such as cotton, rayon, spandex, and polyester, and they are just a few used. Some clothing may even be made of 2 or more different types; this is known as “Blending." Clothing can be decorated or designed with all types of images and colors. The designs can either be embroidered onto the fabric, woven on to the fabric, silk screened, or ironed onto the fabric to create a desired look. Some images that have been used to enhance an article of clothing range from a simple design on front of a T shirt to a famous printing that has been woven into fabric creating a colorful piece of art that one can wear. Fashion is revealing. Clothes reveal what group’s people are in. In high school, groups have names: "Goths, skaters, preps, herbs." Styles show who you are, but they also create stereotypes and distance between groups. For instance, a businessman might look at a boy with green hair and multiple piercings as a freak and outsider. But to another person, the boy is a strict conformist. He dresses a certain way to deliver the message of rebellion and separation, but within that group, the look is uniform. Acceptance or...

...Skate Park It is about 6:30 pm and I sit on a bench in front of the skate park. The skate park is gated all around except one entrance, where they are aloud to leave and walk in with no problem. There are about twenty skaters, all of them males, divided into five sub groups. Each one divided separately through the skate park. One major group containing eight skaters that are located by the entrance, another group of three located by the far left side of the skate park, four are on the half pipe, two are located on the other side of the half pipe, and the last group are in the middle section on the quarter pipe. The biggest group is separated into two, six of them are sitting down on a table having a conversation and two are standing up besides them holding their own conversation. Most of them look around the same age, teens, and one of them looks much older, mid twenties. The other little groups appear to be much younger, early teen age years. I’m not too far from the bigger group, so I could hear some of their conversation. One of them starts the conversation by asking another person if they were at some place at a certain time and the other responds saying he was but he didn’t see him there. Quickly, the conversation tends to switch to a different topic, now I could hear them start talking about someone’s girlfriend. Which comes out to be a little chaotic, because rapidly I would hear them responding with answers like, “Don’t talk about someone if they’re not...

...Jake Nickell and Jacob DeHart started the company with $1,000 in seed money in 2000 although the idea was still more about building a web community than a major clothing business. "It was just a hobby, a way for people to get their artwork out," Nickell commented in a recent interview. By 2002, the hobby had surpassed $100,000 worth of T-shirts and attracted more than 10,000 community members, mostly artists in their teens and 20s. The user base has continued to grow from 70,000 members at the end of 2004 to more than 700,000 today. Sales in 2006 hit $18 million -- with profits of roughly $6 million. In 2007, growth continued at more than 200 percent, with similar margins. Nor was this a niche entry, trading on a specialised fabric or design or access to a boutique market. It has succeeded in one of the mainstream areas of clothing – the T-shirt. Amongst the most popular items worn on the planet, T-shirts as an overall business are huge – but making a successful business out of their design and manufacture can be a nightmare. First there is the design problem. Although there is a market for plain white T-shirts the real business lies in T-shirts with something on them – colours, pictures, slogans – essentially something which allows the wearer to...

...------------------------------------------------- A T-Shirt (T Shirt, tee-shirt, or tee) is a style of shirt. A T-Shirt's defining characteristic is the T shape made with the body and sleeves. It is normally associated with short sleeves, a round neck line, and no collar .T-Shirts are typically made of cotton fibers (sometimes others), knitted together in a jersey stitch that gives a T-Shirt its distinctive soft texture. The majority of modern T-Shirts have a body that is made from a continuously woven tube, so the torso has no side seams. This is accomplished with special weaving machines called circular looms, which produce seamless fabric for tube tops, stockings, and the like. Conventional stitching is used for the waist band, neck band, sleeves and to close the shoulders. The manufacture of T-Shirts has become highly automated, and may include fabric cutting by laser or water jet. T-Shirt fashions include many styles for both men and women, and for all age groups, including baby, youth, teen, adult and elderly sizes. The T-Shirt evolved from undergarments used in the 19th century, through cutting the one-piece "union suit" underwear into separate top and bottom garments, with the top long enough to tuck under the waistband of the bottoms. T-Shirts, with and without buttons, were adopted by miners and stevedores during the late 19th century as a convenient covering for hot environments. T-Shirts, as a slip-on garment without buttons, originally became popular in the United...

...They include Hot Topic Barnes and Noble, and Journeys. I dressed in two different ways. For my dress down I dressed in sagging pants, white t-shirt, tilted hat, and Osiris shoes. For my dress up I wore khaki shorts, button up t-shirt, and Rebok shoes. The first store I went to was B+N. There was a huge difference in the way people acted in my dress up and dress down. When I went dressed down I walk into the store and got a lot of stares. No one offered to help me or anything. As I walk out the door I got stares from people as though I stole something. This part is true too as I left I opened the door for someone and they went through the opposite door. Now when I went dressed up it was a total difference. When I went in I got greeted at the door. People carried out here business and people seem to be more polite around me. To make sure it wasn’t just that store I went to Hot Topic next. Next I went to Hot Topic. Almost the exact same thing happened I went in dressed down first probably waited around for 5 to 7 minutes and there was no help given to me what so ever. No one really stared but there was no service. Then I went back in dressed up. I walk in and started checking out the t-shirts. About a minute later one of the employees came over and asked which ones I liked and stuff like that. I actually bought two shirts. For the last store I went to I went to Journeys. For my dress down I basically got the same reactions as before no help, no service,...

...History of Screen Printing Amanda Grady Some believe that silk-screen printing has dated all the way back to the earlier times in China and Japan. It’s a known fact that the process of silk-screen printing was publically known by the time World War 1 occurred. But the most used silk-screen printing process used today began more than a century ago. The father of silk-screen printing should be credited to Charles Nelson Jones. Jones was a brilliant professor of math at the University of Michigan. There he was granted a patent for a stencil-printing machine in 1887. He was the first introduce an idea to use a diaphragm of any previous material, preferably made of silk or linen fabric. It stood on its own, constructed of wood, foot operated, and most of all; it featured the permanent diaphragm of silk. A sale of the patent was never confirmed. The Badger State Typewriter Co. in Milwaukee in 1890, made a very similar machines. Which in turn would indicate that Jones invention was manufactured and sold within two years of the patent grant. One thing is known for sure, before the turn of the century, many had already begun too see the advantages of this new printing method. With this particular method, it was possible to print on all sorts of unusual surfaces. Rubber, wood, cloth, and glass continuously held oil-based paints on these surfaces being applied by this new silk-screening process. Stencils could be prepared directly onto silk with varnishes or lacquers and were very...

...without employees. This is the smallest and most popular type of business in the United Kingdom. In this situation the owner runs the business independently and also the business and the owner have the same legal identity which means if the business owns money the holder owns money. Explain two reason advantage One benefit of being a sole trader is that I retain all the profit that business makes. This is good because the profit that has been made through selling products or service will come back to the owner. This means all the money that will made from the business retain to the owner as he will not need to pay anyone e.g. staff or supervisor, or accounting etc. For example, if the business receives £3500 in a month from selling t-shirts the full £3500 will retain to the owner. This is a huge advantage because firstly, the owner will have more money to spend in marketing or other promoting recourses and secondly, if more money comes in the more it encourages the owner to work harder. This will make me successful because if I retain all of the money I can expand my business in the future and similarly I will have more available to make my business better, e.g. promote my business effectively. For example, if I have made enough profit for myself and the business, I could expand it by opening a store and hiring staff, as I will have necessary money for this. (Smallbusinesspro.co.uk, 2014) Another benefit will be the owner will have the full control of the business. The owner...

...Ron molder clothesline Project October 14, 2013 Words cannot adequately describe the feelings I feel for the people behind the shirts at the clothesline project. Especially women who are beat and abused both physically and sexually, as well as raped and manipulated. I had never heard of the clothesline project before but the more than “traumatizing” experience will leave an imprint upon my brain forever. There are two things I wish to mention at the beginning of my paper. As I was walking to the grande ballroom I was asked by a student ambassador to write something upon a wall that inspires me. I wrote “the look on a person’s face when you do something that makes their day.” And as I was walking around looking at the various t-shirts and stories the thought kept coming back: “what inspires these people to act the way they do.” I couldn’t understand why there were so many Fathers beating mothers and children, Grandfathers and uncles molesting loved ones, and so people who have been murdered. Shirt after shirt “I hate you” and “why did you do this to me” “I was only x amount years old” I was appalled. More so for the fact that these experiences are happening to us right in our neighborhoods. At the beginning I thought this was a traveling exhibit, but it is not. This is happening right in our own community, around us every day. The sad part is the fact that in a lot of cases, the victims didn’t say anything for years at a time, or due to circumstances people didn’t even believe...

...MY BUSINESS PLAN I am just a 17 year old girl, and it has been 4 months of the beginning of my college life. But, I am very keen to start up my own business so I am planning to open a business in the field of clothing, as I love shopping. I would love to create my own brand and work on it to make it successful. VILIVIA CLOTHINGS LTD. It will be a sole proprietor business, because I personally resist trusting people, on clothing which would initially include; shirts, trousers, jeans, T-shirts, dresses, shorts, formal wear etc, for men and women both. Further, it will be expanded. I strongly suspect, after looking into the industry trends, that clothing industry is flourishing a lot these days. People being highly fashion and brand conscious, buy clothes more often, as it has become a status symbol. According to my prediction, it’s going to be the leading in the coming times. My residence is in Mohali and it’s a fact that, Mohali lacks in brands and quality material and people travel all the way to Chandigarh, for buying clothes. So, I would open my 1st show room in Mohali so-as-to ease my customers and attract them in large numbers. Still, I will have competitions; Adidas, Nike, Levis and many more. Marketing does not only include sales, but also includes after sale services, so both the things will be my motive. My marketing and advertising strategies will be very explosive. Advertisements will be in light on televisions, in newspapers as well as on radio stations. Professional...

...Competitive Analysis Competitive analysis plays a huge role in FTP’s marketing plan. This allows FTP to identify its competitors and evaluate their strategies to determine how its competitor’s products strengths and weaknesses are relative to its own product. This analysis will also establish what makes our product unique compared to our competitors, which will allow the company to play up its attributes in order to attract our target market. Once the competitive analysis has been completed, this will also show us how to position our product. The way we position our product is in the mind of the customer, something that is brought about by a combination of reality and image (Tractinsky, N., & Lowengart, O. 2003). Economics FTP’s T-shirts will be offered to individuals from all different income levels; whether the individual is working hard to become a corporate executive, perfecting their skills to become the next greatest musician, or developing a million dollar business from their home.
