...Why a Harvard Professor Has Mixed Feelings When Students Take Jobs in Finance This is a bittersweet time on campus. Seniors are beginning to find jobs, and while their enthusiasm is infectious, some of their choices give me pause. Many of the best students are not going to research cancer, teach and inspire the next generation, or embark on careers in public service. Instead, large numbers are becoming traders, brokers and bankers. At Harvard in 2014, nearly one in five students who took a job went to finance. For economics majors, the number was closer to one in two. I can’t help wondering: Is this the best use of talent? Of course, these are intensely personal choices as young people chase their aspirations and dreams. But if a favorite student of mine comes up to me and says, “I just got an offer at this investment bank and I’m going to take it,” I want to know how should I feel about it. I will be happy for her individually, but still I wonder: Is this a good decision for society as a whole? As an economist, I look at it this way: Every profession produces both private returns — the fruits of labor that a person enjoys — and social returns — those that society enjoys. If I set up a shop on Etsy selling photographs, my private returns may be defined as the revenue I generate. The social returns are the pleasure that my photographs provide to my customers. A scene from “It’s a Wonderful Life” that presents two types of bankers. Mr. Potter, seated, played by Lionel...

...considered losing your job to a robot? Or much more have you ever considered that migrant workers lose their jobs to robots? This is a question that we all need to start thinking about when considering a job. Robots are a very popular in technology advancements. They are quickly coming up and replacing people in their jobs anywhere from field work to warehouses to possibly even doctor and more. I believe with automation advancing, robots are likely to take over the jobs of agriculture. I believe this because technology has change agriculture tremendously and how quickly thing get done. I also believe this because they are currently testing robots out in the fields. Also with shortage of workers robots will come in play to pick up the slack in the job. Technology has changed agriculture in many ways for example farmers at first would us animals to plow things or move things around and now many us tractors....

...In Blue-Collar Brilliance the author Mike Rose shows us that intelligence isn't based off how much school you have completed. He shows that blue-collar jobs take just as much of your mind and body as white-collar jobs do. He gives us personal examples of his intelligent family members who worked blue-collar jobs and showed that in all jobs, certain qualities have to be learned and developed just like jobs that require an education, so people shouldn't consider these jobs mindless. The story starts off with Rose showing how his mother’s job as a waitress was no easy task. It took many different skills that had to be learned and developed. She had to be able to communicate with people, think quick on her feet, and be able to develop a great...

...bright popular and well informed mechanical engineer, who graduated with an engineering degree from State University in June 2003. As she was a bright and intelligent engineer she always expected a job which can evaluate or where she can implement her working capability and exclusively one her technical skill expertise. So a firm likes Apex Environmental which is a well known and structured firm where Maria most wanted to work. This can evaluate her working ability perfectly. That was her expectation. But the interview was a disaster for her because it was an Stress interview. The interviewer seeks to make applicant uncomfortable with occasionally rude question. The question ranged from unnecessarily discourteous to irrelevant and sexist such. This it reflected a well thought out interviewing strategy on the part of the firm because it helps to identify hypersensitive applicants and those with low high stress tolerance and Maria was selected because of her responsible and mature behavior. To respond the question whether it was a well thought interview or not; well it is controversial. It can be said that it was not overall well structured but the interview was effective. The reason was in the interview the employer asked too many irrelevant questions like “why would you take a job on a waitress in a college if you are such an intelligent person”? Also “Are you planning on settling down...

...Immigrants come from all over however America sees some of the immigrants that come in as a threat. With most Americans they tend to do the jobs that require a good education, immigrants take the jobs no one really wants or believes they don’t need to take. Most times immigrants are paid less than those who are already citizens, this means that the citizens are benefiting from them being here. Many companies across the U.S are trying to lure in immigrant workers because they work for less than the average American. Most Americans require at least minimum wage to work however as their skill sets get better and better they expect more money. However with immigrants what America pays is plenty to spare for their family and they will take whatever they can get. Many people try to come to America to work so their family can stay where they are; like many other parents around the world they only wish to give their children the best life that they can possibly provide. Many of the immigrants that come here came from third world countries or a bad situation, for example in war torn countries they will want to escape to go to a better place. If...

...MT302-02: Organizational Behavior Unit Two: Job Satisfaction, “Choosing a Job that Works for You” January 15, 2013 Unit Two: Job Satisfaction, “Choosing a Job that Works for You” There are several things that are important to me when job hunting. The top five for me are job security, career advancement, great health benefits, commute (drive time) and income potential. These five things I believe are the most important to anyone in the job market needing to provide for themselves and/or their families. With the economy the way it is right now, employees are walking on egg shells, wondering if they are going to be laid off or if the doors will be locked when they show up for work the next day. Job security for me means that I will have a job to go to everyday and be able to earn a living. Every day I hear about people being laid off and companies closing down. In my home town, one of the largest employers in the region closed its doors leaving almost 1,000 people without jobs. Many of the people who lost their jobs are older employees (40-55 yrs. old) who are too young to retire and feel that they are too old to go back to school for 4 to 7 years to start a new career. For most of them, finding a new job paying what they are accustomed to making is a long shot. I want to be able to build a relationship with the company that will last for years to come and will allow me the opportunity grow within the company itself. Nowadays, many companies will not hire someone...

...Brian Mathews English 101 Hofreiter 4-2-13 Technology Taking Our Jobs In the 19th century, The British textile industry was one of the main contributors to the start of the Industrial Revolution. Many self-employed British tailors found themselves out of work with no way to earn income through their profession. It forced tailors out of their jobs because Britain’s textile industry was more efficient than a self employed tailor and the quality was still pretty high. They became obsolete very quickly and if they didn’t find another job, the children and families of these tailors would soon starve or become homeless. As more technologies were invented during the Industrial Revolution, more and more professions became outdated which forced many people to become unemployed. What people don’t realize is that we are still facing the same problem 200 years later. Technology is slowly replacing human jobs in order to make production and services cheaper and more efficient. Based on history, becoming replaced by a machine is inevitable to many people in many areas of work. Although technology is creating jobs, at the same time it is killing them off at an even greater rate. Many people are finding themselves no longer needed to carry out the same job that would be impossible without them 15 years ago. “In the United States, half of the 7.5 million jobs lost during the Great Recession paid middle-class wages, and the numbers...

...educational programs that he or she must have to endure are very hard but eventually pay off in the end. There is also the on-going research about how the job might turn out or the outlook. However the roles and responsibilities that this job takes in are a great deal and weight alone. In this job, everyone has to be very careful of the patient and how they treat the patient, otherwise, the physician will probably lose their job. When applying for this job one needs to know the job description, the qualifications needed, and the job’s future outlook. First, a person needs to know how the job works. As a Sports Medicine Physician a person is required to diagnose athletes suffering from injuries on the field and off the field (Sports Medicine Doctor: Job Duties, Career Outlook and Educational Requirements). Once a person takes upon this job, they are recommended to work with others and different doctors very well. For example, if working with a Nutritionist, both physicians work on the athlete’s metabolism issues or if they are not eating correctly. Then if working with a Therapist, the physicians combine their works to insure that the player’s attitude and self-esteem are at a high level. If the physician is working alone, they are in charge of conjuring up new ways for the quick recovery of an athlete (Sports Medicine Doctor: Job Duties, Career Outlook and Educational Requirements). So in a case where the athlete has a strained muscle, the Sports Medicine Physician is required to...

...the nation, it can raise the decline of low wages, and jobs can be taken away from real American citizens. In this argument of whether banning immigrants are a good thing or not, banning immigration is a good thing. The first thing immigration banning does is it can bring harm to the nation (Supp-16). It can help the nation by having fewer people who do harmful things to the U.S., like drugs and violence (Supp-16). Imagine there was an corrupt country from immigrants because of illegal drug traders. According to facts, since America is a free country, there have been multiple attacks on the U.S. (Supp-16). For example the attack from immigrants from Somalia, where they attacked homes of U.S.A and tried to make American citizens join ISIS. Also, imagine that there was blood splattered everywhere, homes destroyed, and some immigrants yelling at American citizens to join ISIS, that would be a corrupt country. This is how drugs and corruption from immigrants affect the country....
