Eating birds is still a rare thing for them to do. The Goliath bird-eater tarantula is the largest spider in the world. Amazingly, “with its legs stretched out, it could cover a frisbee” (Lambeth). Some males have a leg span of up to 27 cm and do not weigh more than 85 grams. In American terms, that is 12 inches and 3 ounces. That may be pretty hard to imagine. What is even harder to picture, is the Goliath having “fangs as long as paper clips” (Binns). Adventurer Brady Barr had gone on an expedition and came face to face with one after he lured it from its burrow: “This thing has fangs bigger that any snake I’ve ever handled! It is also making noise - a strange sound like ripping Velcro” (“Tracking Tarantulas”). What he heard was a warning to back off. Unfortunately, they encountered one form of defense they have that is not pleasant. Even on account of all this, they aren’t exactly very dangerous to anybody despite what people might say/think.
