...Working Income Tax Benefit Paper for TAXX 344 Executive Summary Since 2008 most Canadians have heard about the Working Income Tax Benefit. It was introduced in 2007 by the Canadian Government as an incentive for those living on social assistance to enter the job market and those in the job market to continue working. The underlying principle is to give a reduction in income taxes to those who earn income from employment or self business to help offset the costs of entering the job market as opposed to living on social assistance. Offsetting costs such as medical and dental costs, work supplies etc. The cost of leaving social assistance and working is referred to as the welfare wall. The working income tax benefit was introduced at a low rate of $500 for individuals and $1,000 for families which considering the maximum net income cut-off amounts did not include the target audience of those who are on social assistance. Thanks to Canada's Economic Action Plan to help stimulate the economy during the Late 2000's Recession the Government provided what they called and enhancement and increased the benefit to $925 for individuals and $1,680 for families and increased the maximum net income levels to include more Canadians. The working income tax benefit is discussed in section 122.7 of the Canadian Tax Act and tax payers use Schedule 6 of the T1 tax return to calculate the benefit based on their earned income and calculates on a sliding phase in rate of 25% and phase...

...My Opinion of the Australian Tax System Australia is a nation that is envied by many underdeveloped countries for our abundance of public services, transport and healthcare as well as the carefree lifestyle that many Australians have grown accustomed to. However, the Australian taxation system has been persistently scrutinized by its taxpayers for its many pitfalls in providing an equitable means of raising government revenue. In my opinion, the major shortcomings of the Australian taxation system include its lack of neutrality, with reference to high-income earners and small business owners, its constant lobbying towards the baby boomer generation, its current ageing population crisis and the permitted negative gearing of investment properties. Many sweeping reforms have been suggested in an attempt to rectify these issues, however it seems that no such recommendations have been implemented. Neutrality of Australia’s Tax System I believe that there are too many vested interests and rent seekers in today’s society for the Australian tax system to be neutral. However, in my opinion, the Australian tax system favors high-income earners and small businesses, in reference to negative gearing, discretionary family trusts and unfair deductible expenses. Negative gearing refers to when an investor purchases a rental property, but the net rental income is not enough to cover the interest on the money borrowed. Negative gearing favors the high-income earners due to the fact that...

...SCHOOL OF LAW ASSIGNMENT 1 COMPUTER NUMBER: LLB1009 COURSE: TAX LAW (L360) LECTURER: MR. P. AKAPELWA DUE DATE: 14TH MARCH, 2014 The research and documentation of this assignment was done by the author; Signed; INTRODUCTION Re-alignment or Re-pricing being a reason why taxes exist, can be defined as a tool bestowed upon governments that allows them to manipulate the behavior of its citizens using taxes. This implies that the governments of any state can influence the economic, social and even environmental sectors of their respective countries through taxes. Neutrality on the other hand is one of the several qualities of a good taxation system which provides that a tax should not alter or affect the economic behavior of the citizens of any given country. The objective of this document thus is to discuss the two above mentioned concepts of taxation and the way in which they can be reconciled in light of tax policy. RE-ALIGNMENT: Definition and importance Taking a detailed approach towards Re-alignment, it has been readily mentioned that it is one of the very reasons why tax exists. Other reasons include: 1) Revenue collection - in order to function effectively, a country, like any other institution needs a source of income. Thus a government is permitted to collect tax from various sources ranging from goods and services to profits made by companies operating within the country. Taxes collected by the Zambian government compose more than 50% of that country’s annual budget...

...The welfare, intended as the set of measures and policies devoted to ensure minimum quality life standards to individuals, is normally associated to the state insomuch reference is generally made to “welfare state”. The welfare state is based on ethical ideals: it is created in the name of social justice, to implement the fundamental rights and freedoms of human beings (as developed from time to time in the various cultures). Stuart White wants to clarify in the Oxford Handbook of the Welfare State, the main ethical arguments, which are inherent in the creation of the welfare state. First of all a process for the achievement of the basic needs of the citizens (questionable what are the basic needs), latterly equality, seen as same opportunities without racial or social influence, and lastly liberty, conceived as ‘negative’ liberty of coercive ‘redistribution’ in order to achieve a moral and social congruence between all the individuals. However, welfare state, even if based on ethic-philosophical findings, has many implications and effects in the economic field. As Briggs (1961) argued, the welfare state is an organization whose purpose is to modify the market forces in at least three directions: (I) ensure to the individuals and to the families minimum incomes; (II) decrease the level of insecurity; and (III) assure the best standard available of social services (Cittadini 2015). ***** Modern concept...

...Unit Name: LSSU 392: Principles of Taxation Law Student Name: Jacqui Atkinson Student Number: 201116672 Unit Coordinator: Kip Werren Capital Gains Tax Reliefs and Exemptions and Offsets against Assessable Income. Word Count: 2265 Introduction: 2 Jack, a former cattle farmer, bought a property of fifty hectares on 15 June 2009 for $410,000 with a house on a one hectare fenced off area. He ran cattle on the remaining forty-nine hectares, which had already been fenced off into suitable paddocks, from 1 July 2009. On 31 January 2011, Jack subsequently sold the fifty hectares due to ill health at the age of 35; this sale produced a capital gain of $80,000. During this time Jack had losses from his cattle farming in both the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 financial years of $2,350 and $1,250 respectively, and also received income from other sources in those years ($45,000 and $23,000 respectively). Issues: Jack is seeking advice in regards to capital gains exemptions and reliefs that can be attributed to the sale of the property. Jack is also seeking advice in reference to offsetting his losses from his cattle farming enterprise against other assessable income that he earned in the 2010/2011 financial year. The issue of capital gains exemptions and reliefs available can be covered under Division 152 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (Cth) (furthermore referred to as ITAA97) which allows exemptions to small businesses for the capital gains tax so long as specific...

...Economics of the European Union ECN309X Essay term 1 To what extent did the 1992 Single Market programme create a single market across the EU? Linde Cloosterman 10418300 14th December 2012 In January 1992 The European Single Market was formed. The prospects were compromising. Hooley et al. (2012) explain that the programme would provide the free flow of products and services, people and capital between the member states of the European Union. Another point was the intention to improve economic performance by lowering costs of trading across national borders within the European Union. But also to boost economies of scale of operation to achieve more competitiveness against the US internal market. However, the developments within the Single Market were not always positive. An example that illustrates this are diverse economies in the euro-zone operating at different speeds, facing different levels of public sector debt but without the freedom to set separate exchange or interest rates (Hooley et al., 2012). The economic crisis within the euro-zone had negative effects on the Single market as well. Therefore it can be questioned: to what extent did the 1992 Single Market programme create a single market across the European Union? Due to the prolonged economic recession by the beginning of 1980 it was clear that the competitive position of the European Community was decreasing. Outcomes with stagnating negative effects within the European economy, rising unemployment...

...politics and be a Christian influence, Henry appealed to the patriot and the Christian in each member of the audience. Throughout Henry’s speech, biblical themes can be found. Henry was not using the biblical phrases in context per say, but he was using them as catch phrases to appeal to the Christian morals and Biblical knowledge that these men had. One of the many biblical references that jumps out is in relation to the crown not listening to the colonists as they petition for fair treatment as British subjects and respect for their rights, and yet were always denied. Henry says, “Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a kiss.” This vivid imagery reminds us of the kiss from Judas on Jesus’ cheek as he identifies him to the Roman soldiers. Luke 22: 47b-48 says, “And he approached Jesus to kiss Him. But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” To the colonists, this kiss represents the betrayal of the King of England who continues to punish the colonists with high taxes and unfair laws. The kiss of Judas lead Jesus to the cross. Another biblical reference that stands out is when Henry says, “Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us” Here, Henry shows his belief that...
