...walk in with guns, shooting you and your fellow peers. The idea might sound far off, but that is what happened at the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999. According to a school safety timeline, “Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, go on a shooting rampage and kill 12 students and one teacher, wound 23 others and then kill themselves” (School Safety Timeline). Weapons were not allowed at the high school, but that did not stop the students. However, there is a large debate going on about whether or not teachers and college students should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on school grounds for self-defense. If teachers and university...

...Most recently schools have been more conscious about strangers entering their school buildings. Because of school shootings and threats becoming more popular, the idea of teachers being armed to protect their students is rising. The topic is debated a lot between teacher themselves, the students and the student’s guardians. Though a lot of people believe that armed teachers may help the students in a time of danger, most likely, arming the teachers may end more badly than predicted. Some believe that arming teachers could protect the students against any harmful threats that may happen. Those that agree with the arming of teachers, say that they would be trained with using the weapon in case of emergency. The teachers may be fine with handling...

...Concealed Weapons In Gun Free Zones Recently many people have started debating whether or not having a concealed weapon in a gun free zone is an intelligent and safe way to maintain protection. Allowing responsible citizens in good legal standing to carry concealed firearms in a lawful manner in gun free zones decreases certain types of violent crimes such as murder, property crime, and even mass shootings. The decline in these types of crime is due to rational behavior of criminals as a group and their fear of being shot by an armed citizen. Because most criminals fear being shot, the carrying of concealed weapons also produces a protective shield for individuals who do not carry firearms due to the fact that impending attackers would not be able to determine who is armed and who is not. Permitting private citizens to carry concealed firearms in a gun free zone is the most cost-effective way to fight these types of crimes. Connecticut is the home of one of the worst school shootings ever to have occurred in history. On December 14, 2012 Adam Lanza shot twenty children and six adults killing them all in a mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The first two to confront Adam were principal, Dawn Hochsprung, and school psychologist, Mary Sherlach (Taylor & Francis Online), they were quickly shot down by the gunman. It is widely believed that if either of the two had been trained with a weapon for self-defense and were permitted to carry a gun on school property then...

...politicians across the country believe that putting guns in classrooms will solve the issue of school shootings. That by putting the object that is causing this issue into the hands of someone who is not able to handle a gun adequately will stop the shootings from happening. The teachers for whom it is legal to carry guns are usually undereducated about using the weapon in a crisis. By putting guns in classrooms, administrators are making it that much easier for a gun related incident to occur in school. Arming teachers has become a widely known controversial topic. Whether or not the government will agree to arm teachers is a mystery, but that does not stop parents all around the country from voicing their opinions. Having guns...

...Should students, teachers, or any school executive be allowed to carry a gun to school? Guns should be allowed in schools because if somebody is going to walk in the school sending gun threats to frightened students or start firing their weapon. Who is going to protect you through the long five or so minutes, or until he runs out of ammunition? Although some may argue that guns should not be allowed in schools because young adults in school are not mature enough to carry a gun, because of a short disposition, or trying to show out. Students, teachers, or any school executive should be allowed to carry a gun to school to protect their Second Amendment right( right to bear arms), and the right to protect themselves in any public school function, event, or during school hours. One reason why guns should be allowed in schools, is because in the fifties and sixties young adults were allowed to carry weapons in the truck/car and there have never really been any big problems. Knives were used in schools everyday for everyday uses, and there was never a big problem with bad dispositions....

...Teachers and Weapons in Schools Jessica Rhodes Composition II WI12 Instructor S. Cochran February 10, 2013 Abstract In this paper, I will explore the controversial question of whether teachers should be allowed or required to carry weapons on school campuses. The question of whether the topic should be entertained has come up time and again after tragedies occur, the timeline of which will be summarized herein. The recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, that devastated the nation on December 14, 2012, has wrenched this debate crudely back into the spotlight. I will investigate different types of protective instruments that could possibly be used, as well as what types are used in schools that have such regulations. I will delve into the reasoning behind states that have implemented laws that allow teachers to carry guns in school and/or at school events. Included within are excerpts from this writer’s first-person interview conducted with Maria Otero-Ball, a kindergarten teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico. As a teacher of children the same age as those involved in the Newtown tragedy, Mrs. Otero-Ball offers a first-hand view on the changes that she and the school have made following the tragedy, as well as her views on the practicality of weapons in the school. My goals in preparing this paper are to expand my thoughts on the subject, peruse the thoughts of others, and explore the statistics to provide a better overall understanding of...

...“Should Teachers Carry Guns in School?” The Premier Online Debate Website, www.debate.org/opinions/should-teachers-carry-guns-in-school./works cited page This website was important and critical to my essay because it offered ideas that supported my thesis on why teachers should be allowed to have a gun in school. The questions of students getting their hands on the gun, mentally unstable adults being able to get their hands on the gun and training the teachers were answered. Ideas on how to make sure that the teacher is mentally capable of protecting the students, the gun is well hidden and no one who wants to harm the students gets the gun were given by many people. Many people digged deeper into other issues besides a student getting the weapon. Different avenues were explored and the people on both sides had something about this topic to say. 2. “Arming Teachers and School Staff - School Security.” School Security, National School Safety and Security Services, www.schoolsecurity.org/trends/arming-teachers-and-school-staff/. This website was important and critical to my essay because it gave me a broader view of one of the main reasons why some people think teachers shouldn’t be allowed to carry a gun in school. Some people think that the student or unstable teacher could grab ahold of the gun. Kenneth Trump, a member of the National...

...A Gun Or a Piece of Chalk: Is Giving Weapons To Teachers The Answer? It seems as though every time someone turns on the television or reads the newspaper, there is a new report of a school shooting in America. In light of these recent shootings, there has been an influx of public uproar about the things the country needs to do to prevent the massacres from happening again. Discussions about the best way to prevent future incidents have gone past simple public debate and have headed to congress in order to change the way things are done nationwide. The discussions have ranged from whether or not to place metal detectors in the front of every entrance to whether teachers should carry weapons on them in order to have someone to defend the students. While there may be financial drawbacks to a metal detector or more guards at a school, those things do not have many obvious side effects. Thus, because of the possible repercussions, the big question in the situation is whether or not teachers should have guns in the classroom. If guns are to be put in the hands of teachers, there would be an unprecedented amount of problems that would come from this solution which is much too rash and not justified. Since the beginning of this year, there have been 47 school shootings in the United States. Couple that with the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut and the Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon earlier this year, the public has turned to consider...

If at the time, carrying a concealed firearm on campus was legal Seung-Hi could have been stopped before he hurt so many people. The new Bill eleven states that both the students and teachers twenty-one and older are allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus with a license. ...Gun Control Hypothesis Paper By Christopher Fields Intro to Sociology Prof. Hennington Outline Hypothesis/ opening statement My opinions Love-hate relationship Crime rates Democrat Opinion Republican Opinion Evidence 1 Evidence 2 Evidence 3 Closing statement References After recent school shootings in America, the American people are starting to wonder when is the government going to stricken the gun control laws. After recent studies I will tell you which party republican or democrat is for the stricken the laws and which of them is not. Personally, I feel like you should be judged by your actions. If your criminal background portrays you as violent you should not be allowed to have a gun. On the other hand, if your have never shown any act of violence you should be allowed to have a gun. Crimes such as fraud, drug possession, and other mediocre crimes should not count. Everyone deserves the right to protect themselves, their family or even a stranger. If gun control laws are stricken gun violence will decrease. I’m going to prove this by using the Social Conflict approach which is a macro-oriented paradigm in sociology that views society as an arena of inequality that generates conflict and social change. Guns have a love-hate relationship with society some people fear guns and some people feel safe around guns. Most people fear guns because people think that they are going to get shot and killed for no reason. While others use guns for safety which is...

...(Kopel). People will always find a way to gain access to weapons if the person wants one badly enough. The United States is fast approaching the halfway mark in favor of stricter gun laws; however, the nation still questions the effectiveness of gun control. Republicans support the right to own, use, and carry guns as stated in the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution (Kopel). Republicans also believe it is an individual’s right to protect family and property through gun ownership. Gun laws should be left to the individual states...

Those for this may announce that their privilege has been exceeded in light of the fact that numerous school grounds differ to permit weapons of any sort on grounds. It is not the privilege to convey a weapon which is in verbal confrontation here, yet rather it is regardless of whether firearms ought to be permitted on school grounds The Constitution of the United States as of now allow nationals the privilege to convey weapons, and being in the South, I am by a long shot no outsider to seeing a firearm every now and then, however...

...June 11, 2014 Every school in the world should have certain Teacher responsibilities and student rights. Students may not think that the teachers deserve to have as many rights as they should or do, but it is a good thing in the long run. If the teachers let the students get away with things more, then their will most likely be less teaching and also bad things could start happening. For example, teachers should be able to be able to randomly search a student’s locker without their permission sometimes. I think that if there is a reasonable cause to why they are checking it, then do it. But if the student does not do anything for it to happen then why can a teacher not trust their students. Today, a lot of students are starting drugs at a younger age and also bring weapons to school. Therefore, teachers have certain responsibilities and rights and students also have certain responsibilities and rights too. Teachers have rights that are constitutional when becoming a teacher. Some of those rights would be substantive and procedural due process rights. This includes the teacher’s rights to receive notice of termination and right to a hearing. The freedom of expression and association provided by the First Amendment is another right as well. A teacher has academic freedom too. Academic freedom is a limited concept that is recognized by courts based on principles of the First Amendment. They also have protection against unreasonable searches and school officials of a teacher’s...

...x Do Texas Teachers Feel Concealed Handguns Are a Viable Security Option on Texas ISD Campuses? Timothy D. Clouse Wayland Baptist University EDUC 5366 1 February, 2012 Abstract This study is to explore how Texas Teachers feel about the possibility of other faculty or staff members carrying a concealed firearm on school property as a means to protect the students and staff from an armed attack. A survey was sent to 720 teachers across the 20 Texas school regions. The survey is made up of nine questions; the first seven are general information questions to provide researchers with demographic data; the remaining two are opinionated questions concerning how they feel about themselves or other trained faculty or staff carrying firearms in their school. Results were divided evenly between those that were for and those that were against having concealed firearms in their schools. Gender, prior military service, school population, and the type of school setting, i.e., elementary, junior high, or high school, generally, were not factors in determining how teachers felt about the subject; however, there was one significant finding, among teachers that possess a Texas Concealed Handgun license (CHL), results were unanimous when asked if they would volunteer to carry a weapon at their school. ...Guns on College Campus Should guns be allowed on college campus? Kenton L. McGowen Abstract This paper will determine whether guns have a place on college, and school campuses. The conclusion that the paper reaches is that students who have guns will be tempted to use them, especially at universities and colleges that are full of drug use, stress, and anxiety. The mixture of guns into a formula like that is simply not conducive to a safe environment. This paper will take evidence from experts, as well as state rulings to show the two sides of gun control in regards to school campuses in order to answer the question: Should guns be allowed on college campuses? The constitution of the United States guarantees our right to bear arms in order to defend ourselves, but where does the line fall where it is ok and not okay to carry weapons? The debate has shifted from restaurants, to stores, and now to schools. It is recently that the question has come up, should college campus students be allowed to have guns? The question is a safety issue and mostly centers around a need for the preservation of life on these campuses, and whether or not the guns are absolutely necessary to have. It has been spurred on by the recent slew of school shootings that have hit areas of the country, most notably Virginia Tech in 2006. There are valid argumentative points to both sides, however. As previously mentioned, the constitution of the United States guarantees...
