Operating Systems

Question#1
There is only two other possibilities
1. Process is blocked while it was in ready state.
2. Process running from blocked state.
Only transition 2 is possible because when it is possible that process is waiting for input that is yet not available and it is also possible that operating system has decided to allocate CPU time to any other process.
The transition 1 is not possible because when a process Is in ready state it cannot block itself while it is not waiting for input and only in ready state.
Question#2
In this problem we have five process i.e. Customer, order takers, cook, packaging specialists, cashiers.
We have sequential inter process communication between processes which uses pipes for communication between processes.
Our chain of communication should be like this

Customer
Order Takers
Cook
packaging specialists
Cashiers

Question#3
In this problem
T=Running time for any process
S=switch time for a process
Q=time Quantum
(a) Q = infinite
Process has infinite time quantum Q so it will run until it blocks itself
CPU efficiency=Q/Q+S
In reality it will be
CPU efficiency=T/T+S
Since it has infinite time quantum and switch time will be very little as compared to quantum
Then efficiency will be
CPU efficiency=T/T=1

(b) Q > T
In this case CPU has also time quantum greater than process completion time then its efficiency will be
CPU efficiency=Q/Q+S
This will be
CPU efficiency=T/T+S

(c) S < Q < T
Since
Q

Proposal - Antiquated Equipment

...computer equipment situation is older than five years. They can no longer keep up with the current updates and programs needed to run a successful operation. There has been several hours of downtime and crashes that the techs has had to go and fix only for them to break down in another area. As soon as the techs get one area up and running another goes down. Using this analogy; once you replace an engine in a vehicle, the transmission is soon to follow. Why is that? It is because those items were built and installed in the vehicle at the same time, therefore they will more than likely go out at the same time and if they don’t, they will within a six month period. Same goes for computers and servers. All the parts were built pretty much at the same time, installed at the same time therefore will go out at the same Current Situation Considering the current situation, the techs are spending a lot of time away from other essential duties to keep these machines running. The costs of these repairs is costing more than what it would cost to buy new machines. * Tech time amounting into hundreds of hours * Employee productivity down * Repair costs are up * Loss of customer service * Crashes, blue screen of death * Non supportive operating system If the situation remains the same, the repair costs, loss of customers, loss of productivity will suffer thus losing the company surmountable time and money. Employee productivity and moral will suffer as well. ...

Open Source Operating Systems

...1-3 Short Paper: Open Source Operating Systems Southern New Hampshire University September 7, 2014 In 1991, Linus Torvalds created Linux and after a couple releases and improvements, the computer community caught on. Some advantages of the Linux Operating System are low cost, stability, performance, network friendliness, flexibility, compatibility, choice, fast and easy installation, full use of hard disk, multitasking, security and open source (Haas, 2014) . There is no major initial investment needed to obtain the Linux operating system. There is no fee for a license unlike Microsoft Windows. For comparative purposes, Windows 8.1 64-bit is retailing for 96.99 at BestBuy and 99.99 at Newegg.com. With no initial monetary investment, Linux gives many potential users an opportunity to try the OS. The ease of exposure to the Linux OS make it easier to increase adopters and faithful users of the OS. Linux’s stability can contributed to its user permission design. Linux runs with lowest permission levels possible which minimizes the possibility of damaging the system. Linux is written to survive in the way it keeps program memory space and system kernel resources separate (Cedar Valley Tech, 2009). Also since Linux is open-source, bugs are fixed by an army of ready developers who are not trapped within the confines of a software manufacturer. Though no operating system is perfect, Linux can run for years without needing to be restarted (Godbey, 2006). Linux performs well due...

...An operating system is the software that manages the hardware and software resources, it is required for most application programs to function. Operating systems work as an in-between for the programs and computer hardware. It is responsible for allocating computer resources for efficient use of space and power. There are three major operating systems in use today and they are Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX, and each has its own pros and cons depending on what you are using it for. Mac OSX is the operating system used by Apple for their computers. Mac OSX will only work on Macintosh computers with PowerPC or Intel processors, as opposed to Windows and Linux which are compatible with most brands. Mac OSX uses a graphical user interface that is popular with musicians and artist because it has more readily available design/media software. Several high-end graphic, video and audio applications were developed for Mac platforms in the early days of personal computers and the trend has continued even though the applications have been ported for Windows they still run more efficiently on Macs making them preferable for people in the creative arts community. Many people also like OSX for its ease of use and their frequent updates via point releases that make the computer run more efficiently. Linux is a growing number of operating systems meant to run in computers, phones, and several more electronic devises. Linux was created by Linus Torvalds as a free alternative to Windows. Open Closed Source

...Gamberutti Open/Closed Source The background behind an operating system stems into different branches of a tree. There are many items that go into a functional operating system. One of which includes open and closed source. To understand what may be a source for an operating system is the first step to understand what an open or closed source is. Even though at times it can be a wasteful effort, open/closed sources can be an advantage of cost sharing and software development. First it is a good idea to find out what it means to have a open or closed source system, meaning components that make up the functions needed for an application or software. With both open and closed working very differently as to how the system is developed and how they run within a software program or application. Each of these sources will be discussed. Open source systems are typical used for everyone to see and for anyone to use, and this is why the name is open. There are advantages to having an open source system which include: • Larger Development Support – Giving a large support system the developers feel as though they can make changed when and where every needed (Vidal, 2013). • Customizable – Having full control of the system gives developers a sense of control to make changes to the programs for advancement in all areas (Vidal, 2013). • Security – Having two eyes is better than one, having more security for the system and more eyes to read the code is better for cost sharing...

Differentiating Between Market Structures

...software giant responsible for bringing Windows to the PC. Microsoft is also a known and respected company in a global market. The tech giant has dominated the computer industry since its start in 1981. Due to the nature of such a huge company, Microsoft has its hands in multiple markets. Microsoft currently competes in file hosting, software, operating systems, and gaming consoles. Unfortunately, each one of the aforementioned markets differ from one another. For the purpose of this discussion, the market that is of concern is Microsoft’s evolvement in operating systems. Determining the market structure Microsoft competes in with regards to operating systems makes it much more manageable to implement competitive strategies to maximize profits. At a quick glance at the competitors, Microsoft has in operating systems one might think Microsoft operates in a monopoly. However, this is untrue. In a true monopoly, there is one seller, no close substitutes, blocked entry, and one firm that controls price. Microsoft currently competes with multiple companies like Apple, Google, Linux, Unix, and Sun Microsystems. Even though the market share of these companies is rather small if even noticeable, Microsoft would not fit into a monopoly category. In a recent study on market share of operating systems, Microsoft currently holds 91.62% of the desktop operating system market ("Netmarketshare", n.d). Because of this Microsoft competes in an oligopoly market. An oligopoly market is defined as, ...

...An operating system is a level of programming that allows you to do stuff with computers. It interacts with the computer’s hardware to transmit your command into a language the computer can interpret. Operating systems is like a computer manager what a software needs and what your system can provide to support the software needs that includes your memory processing unit and your computer storage access among other things that makes sure your system is never overtaxed. The five differences I came up with is price, quantity of functions, compatibility, easy to use, easy to find system. Windows is most common due to its mid-range price and most popular used in the operating systems today. Mac OS is in the higher range of price but hardly any compatibility but good for home pc that you don’t use to play games or want any viruses because Mac has very little virus due to the windows market share. Almost every application or game will work on a windows operating system but due to this you may need a antivirus on your system due to windows is very vulnerable to viruses. With windows there is also so many functions to make windows very easily to use and with its popularity it has the highest tech support although windows due run slower due to all the applications and software it can run. Mac OS is high in price due to its high reliability and it looks way better than a windows. Linux is the cheapest operating system because it is just a kernel and not a full operating system. Strategic Innovation

...discontinuous world, strategy innovation is the key to wealth creation” (Mintzberg, Lampel, Quinn, & Ghoshal, 2003, p. 471). It is a way for new entrants to succeed in the face of adversity and a way for incumbents to reinvent their products for success. This paper evaluates Microsoft Corporation’s innovation strategy as it related to its product and also evaluates the strategy as a measure of the company’s success. Company background and SEC filings Founded in 1975, incorporated in 1981 and with an initial public offering in 1986, the Microsoft Corporation mainly focuses on developing software products and services for their customers. There are five divisions of Microsoft: Windows and Windows Live Division, which creates operating systems for PCs; Server and Tools that develops server infrastructure and software; Online Services Division that focuses on easing consumer concerns and simplifying searches with Bing; Microsoft Business Division, which sustains the Microsoft Office Suite; and the Entertainment and Devices Division with products such as the Xbox360 and Kinect. Microsoft operates in more than 100 countries around the world, with sales growth attributed to creative design of new products and services. Their main competitors are Apple, Google, Yahoo, Adobe, Nintendo, IBM, and HP. With that level of competition, Microsoft is thoroughly committed to staying at the top of their business. To do this, they developed a deep passion for research and development that...

...computers. Linux is a robust multi-tasking networked open source operating system that has attracted a large market in recent past. The operating system is becoming popular with mobile phones and enterprise software and can only be installed on a small fraction of desktop computers for the following reasons; The installation process can get complex at times to a normal user. This may require support which may increase the total cost of ownership despite the software being free. Also the number of users using Linux desktop deployment is small which keeps firms off from porting desktop applications to a Linux environment. In addition, only a small amount of money is saved when someone decides to invest in Windows operating system.  Are there particular categories of products or users who might see Linux as more appealing than conventional operating systems? Do you think Linux's share of the desktop market will increase? Why or why not? Linux offers robust security measures making it hard to be hacked. Firms running sensitive data and information could improve the security of their systems by using Linux as opposed to MS-Windows which is vulnerable to hacking (Gallaugher, 2013). Similarly the operating system is not prone to virus attacks hence making ideal to be deployed in an environment where there is a greater risk of virus infections.  The operating system may also be more appealing to programmers designing softwares because...
