The game of golf contains an interesting juxtaposition of old tradition and new science, ideas, and technology; possibly more so than any other sport. While new age technology is certainly altering the game in a wide array of areas, it has arguably had the most obvious effect on the golf ball. This paper will briefly discuss the technological advancements of the golf ball, and analyse both its impact on the sport and whether measures should be taken to decrease the distance that the ball can be hit.
In order to fairly and intelligently discuss the golf ball distance debate it is crucial for one to understand the advancements made in golf ball technology over the past 50 years, and the impact those advancements have had on the game. While people have been inventing new ball technologies and revising old golf ball designs for centuries, the first ball thats chemistry and construction was similar to our modern day …show more content…
One such individual is the vice president of marketing at Titleist, Michael Mahoney. Mahoney was quoted saying, “there’s ‘no empirical evidence distance is hurting the game and golfer’s experience of the game.’” (Nickel, Chris). The main difference between Mahoney’s standpoint and the standpoints of Nicklaus or Woods has to do with the intended audience. Mahoney’s statement is in regards to the amature player, while it is unclear whether a proposed rollback in distance would affect professional golfers only, or pros and amateurs alike. Also, while concerns about increasing cost due to expanding courses, and increased time of play due to increased course length are certainly valid, Mahoney is correct that there have been no data to support this claim. While rolling back golf ball distance and moving forward without any change are both potential options, it is safe to say that many people would be more likely to support a

Every work industry creates it's own work environment and depending on the industry is what dictates how it should be managed. In this situation, we will discuss the various management functions available and how it pertains not to one organization, but how it pertains to a certain industry, and that is managing a golf course. Golf course management seems to be an easy occupation to deal with, but as we will soon discuss this is nothing further from the truth. There are four basic functions of management. These functions involve planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These four functions play a pivotal role in all types of management. Planning is the first step in every management process. A company first makes the most-important decision of where and when this will take place. It may deal with forecasting future business and setting deadlines to meet the expected goals of completing the project. Throughout this process, these plans are being adjusted to save time and money. In golf course management as in with any other industry this is where...

The company will increase market share and profits by focusing on specific target markets over the next 12 months. Environmental Analysis Socio-Culturally, Callaway is affected by the fact that the majority of its customers are Caucasian and male. Further, this demographic is largely made up of male baby boomers, and this segment is aging rapidly, with many giving up the game due to health reasons. Also, children are not taking up the game with the numbers that they used to. Instead, they opt for video games and other sports. Politically, Callaway is not affected by legislation. Callaway Golf Financial Analysis

...Questions: 1. Describe the company business. Is management pursuing strategies that you think will add value to shareholder wealth? Answer: Callaway Golf Company (ELY) is a company that produces high-end equipment for amateurs and professionals to play Golf. The company was created by Ely Callaway Jr. in 1982. With the increasing demands of hiring new specialists as well as increased capital demand, Callaway Golf Company decided to take their company public in 1992 on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker ELY. Since then, ELY has focused primarily on the business-to-consumer market selling woods, irons, wedges, putters (Odyssey brand), golf balls, as well as accessories. Many golfers including myself hate to admit that it is nearly impossible to play golf all year round. Much of this is due to unplayable conditions during the late fall to early spring seasons. During this time period, the demand for Callaway’s products start to diminish. Several companies whose primary operations are dependent on Golf have suffered financially over the past few years because of a decrease of interest in the game as well as less than perfect economic conditions. From 2010 to mid 2013, Callaway has posted consistent net losses. These financial hits have caused Callaway to sell off some of its low-performing subsidiaries including Ben Hogan and Top Flite. From an investor’s standpoint, it has been difficult to find any successful cyclical business on an earnings per share...

Ageism in Workplace

...I will tell you now, that when you read this paper you will learn the secret of health for both the mind and body. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the discussions I had with the guest seniors and speakers, and relate this experience to the material learned throughout the course. In this paper I will begin by discussing age discrimination in the workplace, then I will examine the traits and definition of successful aging, and finally I will talk about the quality of life after retirement. In life, we encounter several obstacles, how we face this adversity is up to us, thus the quality of life in our later years is ultimately in the palm of our hands. Whether we choose to live a healthy or sedentary lifestyle, it will determine the state of our mind, and therefore quality of life. Age Discrimination in the Workplace Unfortunately, age discrimination is a reality in today’s world. Generally, when we think of ageism, we picture older workers experiencing trouble finding a job or being treated as incompetent in the workplace (Novak & Campbell, 2010, p. 215). When I spoke to Jean, an assistant oral surgeon, she however said she did not experience any age discrimination in her workplace. In fact, she became really close friends with the surgeon. Jean felt it was time for retirement once the office replaced all their equipment with new technology, “the technology was just way too advanced, and that’s when I realized it’s probably time for me to retire at 69. Plus, I don’t...

...Running head: Evolution of Management Principles The Evolution of Management Principles Tim Akers American Public University 20 April 2013 ABSTRACT In this paper I will be explaining the evolution of management from the beginning of the industrial revolution to present which includes Classical School of Management, the Human Relations/ Behavioral School of Management, Theory X and Y, the Scientific Approach, Contingency Approach, and Theory Z. I will also be comparing the classical style and the present style to each other and to my current work environment. The Evolution of Management Principles The Classical school of thought began during the Industrial Revolution around 1900 and continued into the 1920s when new problems related to the factory system began to appear. Managers were unsure of how to train employees (many of them non-English speaking immigrants) or deal with increased labor dissatisfaction, so they began to test solutions. Traditional or classical management focuses on efficiency and includes scientific, bureaucratic and administrative management. Bureaucratic management needs a rational set of structuring guidelines, such as rules and procedures, hierarchy, and a clear division of labor. Scientific management focuses on the "one best way" to do the job. Administrative management emphasizes the flow of information in the operation of the organization. The first management theory approach to emerge was...

...Stephen Rueden INT1 Task 3 Sub domain 114.1.1 Scientific Concepts, Theories & Inquiry 4/17/2011 Literature Review: Elasticity and Hooke’s Law: In physics, elasticity is the physical property of a material that returns to its original shape after the stress that made it deform is removed (Elasticity, para. 1). Elasticity was first studied in the late seventeenth century by the English scientist Robert Hooke (16351703). He made observations about elasticity using metal springs and eventually developed what is known as Hooke’s Law: The restoring force exerted by an elastic object is proportional to how far it has been distorted from its equilibrium state. Everything we associate with springs, has some place in the behavior of balls (Bloomfield, p.69). When a ball or a spring returns to its equilibrium state, it releases stored energy. Isaac Newton and the Law of Universal Gravitation: Isaac Newton (16431727) studied gravity and its effects on falling objects. He is most famous for the three laws of motion. Newton’s law of universal gravitation states that every point mass attracts every single other point mass by a force pointing along the line intersecting both points. The earth’s gravity exerts a downward force on the ball, called the ball’s weight. Its weight causes the ball to accelerate downward (Bloomfield p. 10). Reasoning: What does elastic mean? When a rubber band gets stretched it returns to its original shape. What is something that is not elastic? When a piece of...
