If you choose to live your life safe in a bubble, far from ideas which contradict your own and never question your culture you will sacrifice the wonderful realization that in one way or another you are connected to the rest of humanity. One could argue that racism and prejudice stem from hatred and anger but this hypothesis fails to acknowledge that it is impossible to be angry and hateful 24/7. In reality, xenophobia stems from lack of exposure or experience. Culture is a complicated idea especially with immigration and globalization. Many people try to desperately hang onto their culture, fearful that their way of life will be taken away from them. While doing this, they often try to destroy other cultures around them in order to preserve their own. These people fail to realize that cultures are more alike than different. Everyone, everywhere wants to find happiness and love and be free of fear and hurt. Exposure to other cultures …show more content…
At one point in time aspects of stereotypes were probably true, to an extent. Though there are stereotypes for many different topics and issues most revolve around race and culture. What makes stereotypes racist is that people choose to view them as a representation of an entire culture or race. As Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie says in her 2009 Ted Talk “...that is how to create a single story, show a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again, and that is what they become.” It is a whole lot easier to see things as black and white (or brown and white) than to waste the energy trying to understand every aspect of a culture or people. Children naturally divide things into groups, their world are very black and white. A skill that is often neglected throughout childhood is learning how to grow past this. We are all vulnerable to to falling victim to “...the danger of the single story.” and therefore we can all continue to try and learn how to defeat

...Thomas The television show that I am going to write about is called “How I Met Your Mother” season 1 episode 2 “Purple Giraffe”. The main characters in this scene are Ted, Marshall, and Lilly. This scene takes place in the living area of their shared apartment. It starts off with Lilly and Marshall sitting at the dining room table, he is on his laptop while she stares at him with love in her eyes. Lilly starts to smile while playing with the ring on her left finger. While she is staring in Marshall’s eyes she brings up her excitement about how she cannot believe that they are engaged. Marshall looks up at her from his laptop and responds with the words “I know” while smiling. Lilly starts to talk and move around as if she is nervous, tilting her head in a concerning manner. Marshall then closes his laptop and looks at Lilly, they both stare at each other while what looks like they are confessing their love for one another. Ted and Marshall and Ted are best friends; Ted is in the living room watching television. Both Lilly and Marshall turn to Ted and asks him a question about their engagement. Ted looks up from the television rolling his eyes with an uninterested look on his face about the fact that they are getting married. Just as they were talking to him Ted sees something on the television that excites him. He jumps off of the couch and turns up the television when he sees this lady named Robin on there that he likes. He turns to both Lilly...

Research Bias

...investigations and the experimental processes, bias can significantly negatively affect a research study. Different types of bias may influence a research in different ways. This paper discusses three types of bias that affect research: the first type is design bias, second is reporting bias, and the third is unconscious bias. Design bias is often introduced when the researcher fails to take into account the bias that can potentially distort the results and their analysis. For instance, in the TED-talk by Ben Goldacre, he mentioned a 2001 Australian study found that olive oil offered protections against skin wrinkling; however, he questioned about the validity of this finding. He noticed there was a clear design bias in the study, since back in the 1930s, those who eat olive oil would likely be wealthier, do less outdoor chores, and have higher socioeconomic standings. Although people in the study who eat olive oil did found to have fewer wrinkles, there were interlocking social, political and cultural reasons that altered the finding (Goldacre, 2011). When researchers fail to recognize the existing bias in their study, as shown in this example where the study fails to recognize the external variables that affected the finding, the research loses its validity....

Philip Zimbardo's Research

...The actions of man throughout history are often defined by two different codes of conduct: good and evil. The tendencies of human beings can be observed and analyzed through the work of several psychologists. Renowned psychologist, Philip Zimbardo’s research shows that good people will continue to commit evil acts when they are put under certain conditions, eventually generating the loss of their identity. These conditions test the moral strength and personal conscience of intrinsically good people. His research provides a lens for the explanation of the meaning and causes of these recurring evil phenomenon. Thomas Paine’s famous quote, “[these] are the times that try men’s souls,” strongly relates to the conflicts between right and wrong that...

In the novel, The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien uses selected diverse writing techniques to support what he intently wrote. In my opinion, these techniques are very immediate and compelling for his readers as well as are essential to support non-fiction writers’ styles. Tim O’Brien uses symbolism, common language, and fiction writing in his novel for the purpose of showing his readers the big picture of US soldiers in the Vietnam War. For one thing, symbolism is a technique that uses a word, a phrase, or a description in order to represent a deeper meaning than the words themselves. In the first chapter of The Things They Carried, the author states, “Jimmy Cross carried letters from a girl named Martha,” ‘Ted Lavender, who was scared, carried tranquilizers, 6 or 7 ounces of premium dope” “Norman Bowker carried a diary. Rat Kiley carried comic books. Kiowa, a devout Baptist, carried an illustrated New Testament.” By listing the daily-using things the soldiers carried, the author not only indicates the soldiers’ characteristics but also implies unseen things as the love of Jimmy Cross for Martha, the fears...

Biopsychosocial Case Study Paper

...Biopsychosocial Case Study Paper Theodore (Ted) John Kaczynski—AKA the Unabomber—was born May 22, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Wanda and Theodore Richard Kaczynski (Meyer, Chapman & Weaver, 2009). The date of his first recorded attack was on May 25, 1978 when a package exploded at Northwestern University, and his last attack was on April 24, 1995 aimed at the California Forestry Association. However, before the spree of attacks—mostly targeting universities and airlines—Theodore Kaczynski’s life was marked by antisocial tendencies, flattened affectivity, and interpersonal dysfunction. During his primary and secondary Ted played by himself and his mother encouraged socially isolated activities, such as reading. He graduated high school one year early but was not remembered specifically by most of his class mates. He received his Ph.D. in 1967 from the University of Chicago and taught at the university level for several years before abruptly quitting and moving to a secluded cabin in Montana. Even though several diagnoses of psychological disorder are warranted, the diagnosis of schizoid personality disorder (SPD) best describes the particular features exhibit by the Unabomber over the course of his upbringing and adult years. Though, to piece together a diagnosis of SPD and the life events of Ted an overview of the case study must be presented, the psychological, social, and biological precursors of the disorder must be examined, and the application of the behavioral-cognitive...

...Annotated Bibliography THESIS STATEMENT: In order to improve our level of education and help students to retain and learn what teachers are teaching, the state needs to remove standardized state level of testing; this will encourage children of young age to think creativity and think outside the box, encourages organic learning and prevents the unnecessary stress on young children. Robinson, K. (2013, April) Ted Talks Education How to escape educations death valley [Video File] Retrieved from http://www.ted.com/talks/ken_robinson_how_to_escape_education_s_death_valley#t-782486 Ken Robinson is an author, speaker and international advisor on education. He emphasized on importance of education and how it is that we are to change the way we are teaching in America. He mentions that while the standardized testing is ok, we should however expand on the notion with state testing and expand within the arts. He mentions that 60% of children drop out of school before they get into high school. He also states the No Child Left Behind act is based not on diversity but conformity. He compared Finland to each state within the America. Finland does not use any standardized testing; yet they are consistently above average. The difference with Finland and any state in America can be summed up by 3 things. 1) America in general or state level does not individualize teaching and learning. 2) America in general or state level does not invest in the teacher. He states that America...

Creative Spark Paper

...Creative Spark Paper PHL/458 Creative Minds and Critical Thinking July 7, 2014 Abstract In the video John Bohannon, a scientist and writer, gives a presentation which takes place in November 2011 at an international convention hosted TED in Brussels, Belgium. Bohannon introduces a modest proposal for easing our economic financial burden through the use of dance vice power point presentations. The idea first came to Bohannon during a conversation with a friend who is physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His friend was struggling to explain a scientific experiment on “lasers could be used to cool down matter”. Science is a subject where the more words that are spoken the more confusing it becomes. Therefore by the end of the conversation with his friend, Bohannon, was more confused. Then thought the experiment could have been explained more clearly through dance. Dance vs. PowerPoint As I scanned the list of Creative Spark videos I decided to make my selection based on the title that grasped my attention. I eventually narrowed it down to three. However the first video that I watched was titled “Dance vs. power point, a modest proposal by John Bohannon and the only one. In no way shape or form am I a science buff. Therefore when his presentation captured and maintained my attention that spoke volumes. Bohannon makes the statement, “bad power point presentations are a serious threat to our global economy” while it sounds like a ridiculous...

Ted Talk Rhetorical Analysis

...The Pillars Of Persuasive Power Rhetoric is the arts of using language to inform and advocate for the truth, to connect ideas, and to develop arguments in particular situations. Aristotle, a well-respected Greek philosopher, considers rhetoric as a means of persuasion. He defines ethos, logos, and pathos as the three essential ingredients to a successful appeal. These three interconnected components are the backbone for the persuasive power inside the TED Talk titled “What Really Happens When You Mix Medications?”. Russ Altman, the speaker of this TED Talk, harnesses different dimensions of each persuasive power to explain to the audience that taking two or more medications can lead to a drug–drug interaction that can either amplify or block...

Not All Monsters Are Make Believe

...WR-123 Research Paper NOT ALL MONSTERS ARE MAKE BELIEVE - A CASE STUDY ON THEODORE R. BUNDY What causes someone to become a serial killer? Is there something inherently evil about them that emerge as they age, or are they born that way? Do they become that way because of their upbringing? Most Psychologists feel that it is a combination of all these things that determine the psychosis exhibited by serial killers. (www.psychology.org/links) Psychologists have looked into the darkest recesses of human behavior, to try to figure out how and why people commit such gruesome and brutal atrocities against their fellow human beings. One of the best cases of documented psychopathic behavior is that of Theodore R. Bundy. On November 24, 1946 Theodore Robert Cowell (aka Ted Bundy) was born. His mother was a single young woman who decided the best course of action was to move back home to have her parents help her raise her son; as in the 40’s it was not acceptable for a young single woman to have a child out of wedlock. Until the age of four, Ted believed that his mother was his older sister, and grandparents were his mother and father. (Rule, A: The Stranger Beside Me) The signs that something was dreadfully wrong with Ted began to show themselves very early in his childhood. When Ted was barely three years old, one of his Aunt’s stayed the night with the family. The Aunt woke up in the early morning hours to find her young nephew Ted, lifting her blankets...

Schools Kill Creativity

...Topic Proposal: Creativity Limitations in the Public School System Is the public school system limiting the creativity of the students that are enrolled? Creativity in the public school system is a controversial topic that has sparked the attention of many. We live in a society that enforces strict dress code policies in public schools. We live in a society that that has strict mandated curricula that must be followed, and we live in a society where art departments are being cut from schools. This topic requires immediate attention today because the public school system is negatively impacting the creativity of the enrolled students by not allowing students to freely explore their selves and areas of interest. By conducting research that deals with how the public school system is impacting the students’ creativity from both viewpoints, I will attempt to show the multitude of arising problems with the public school system, and ultimately support my own opinion about the topic. I will also explain why immediate action is necessary and steps to take in order to begin reversing the issue I feel as if the public school system is limiting the creativity of students in many ways. Some ways include, but are not limited to, the enforcement of dress code policies, the mandated curricula that teachers must follow, and the budget cuts that are taking art departments out of public school. However, there are many other opposing viewpoints to my claim. Tim Bradley, a writer for the Huffington...

Robotics Technology

...GS1140 Problem Solving Theory Unit 1 Research Paper 1: Paradigm Shift Daniel Yerger Page 1 Robotics Technology The idea of robots came about in 1495 by Leonardo Di Vinci who designed the first humanoid robot. The first computer-controlled robotic arm was designed by George Devol and Joe Engleberger in 1954 this led to the development of the first industrial robot in 1961. In 1977 Star Wars the movie creates the strongest image for the human future with robots like R2D2 and C3PO in the 1960s it inspired a generation of researchers in the robotic technology field. In 1989 a walking robot name Genghis was developed by the mobile robots group at MIT and was known for the way it walks called the Genghis gait. It is predicted by the Japanese Mitsubishi research Institute that each household would on a robot by 2020. Robots are mechanical devices that does some type of work or has a purpose that people would normally do, some robots are totally controlled by an onboard computer system and sensors, and some robots are controlled by people. Cybernetics is also a type of robotic technology device that can replace limbs, some of these devices are controlled by the nerves of the limb that was severed in some way. In 20 years we should be able to replace limbs that will look part of the body and be controlled as if it was the original. Industrial robots are used in it in a vast number of factories the well-known ones are in the auto manufacturing industry. A lot of the products...
