Title: Telecommuting – Working from Home
Name: Leigh Ann Anderson
Purpose: To persuade the audience how telecommuting is beneficial to them and try to convince them to consider it for their jobs.

I. Introduction a. Imagine an alarm going off, waking you from a deep sleep. It’s 8 am on a Monday morning and, after much reluctance, you stumble out of bed, take a shower, brush your teeth, and trudge to your kitchen for your morning cup of coffee. Realizing it’s time to head off to work, you start your car and start making your way onto the interstate, only to be slowed down by a mile long stretch of heavy traffic. Looks like you might just be late for work and have to hear a long rant about it from your boss. Or maybe your car didn’t start at all this morning. The battery didn’t give you any notice that it was going to die on you. Perhaps you have a sick child and just find it impossible to make it into work or you’re feeling a bit under the weather yourself. b. These are just a few of the many circumstances that make telecommuting, or working from home, an attractive option. c. There will be those days where it may seem unlikely or even impossible that you will be able to make it to your job, but you still need to get work done in order to stay on track or even meet a deadline. d. In the hopes of persuading you to consider telecommuting, I will explain how beneficial it can be for you and provide you with tips with how to go about it for your job.

Transition – First, I will explain the advantages of working from home, both for yourself and your employer.

II. Body e. Benefits i. From the survey results, the majority of those who answered believed that a major disadvantage of working from home was the lack of a social and competitive environment. ii. According to an article published in the Harford Business Journal in September 2007 titled “Working from home not the best deal, study finds,” writer Anita Bruzzese states that the lack of a socially supportive and competitive environment has proven to have a negative effect on a telecommuter’s productivity; however, allowing an employee to socially disconnect from others for a short time, but still having them come to a central place for work most times gives them the opportunity to still build workplace relationships and improve their performance. iii. So those who work from home at least one a week still find themselves satisfied with their work and their employers. iv. According to the American Telecommuting Association, other benefits include: 1. More family time – telecommuting, on average, provides an extra hour each day to spend with family 2. Eliminates the time, trouble, and expense of physically commuting to work – employees who work from home save money on gas and spend less of their time stuck in rush hour traffic 3. More schedule flexibility – employees have the advantage to take a short break from work to take care of other duties such as changing a diaper, taking care of a sick child, or preparing a quick meal 4. Less pressure – employees don’t feel the need to worry about finding useful activities to cram into every last minute at the office 5. Decreases employee turnover and administrative costs for employers 6. Society even benefits from less air pollution and traffic congestion

Transition – Now that I have explained some benefits of working from home, I will provide you with some tips on getting started if you wish to pursue telecommuting.

f. Tips for telecommuting v. First of all, some companies do not even provide employees with the option to work from home. vi. An article published in August 2013 called “How Telecommuting Works” on HowStuffWorks.com by Tim Crosby provides tips for convincing your employer to provide a telecommuting option. 7. Write a formal proposal a. Provide a list of companies in your business sector that provide a telecommuting option to their employees to make your proposal applicable. b. List productivity improvements and projected cost savings that the company may experience 8. Be flexible c. Most companies will require you to come into the office sometimes so make yourself available when needed vii. Other tips to keep in mind include: 9. Keeping a log of what you accomplish – your company will require a progress report especially if they become skeptical of your productivity at home and it shows that you are engaged with your work 10. Don’t dress sloppy – although it is attractive to work in your pajamas, dressing as you normally would for your job is recommended. d. In a section titled “5 things not to do while telecommuting” written by James Kendrick and published on ZDNet.com on July 13, 2013, dressing as you normally would for your job sets a more formal work ethic and has shown employees to stay motivated. e. Also, many employers use Skype or similar programs to keep in touch with their “off base” employees. Looking professional will help cover your back if your employer decides to unexpectedly check in with you. 11. Make yourself available as often as possible during the work day – especially if your company keeps in contact with you or you need to communicate with team members or other employees

III. Conclusion g. To wrap things up, I have provided you with some benefits associated with working from home and some tips to keep in mind if you find yourself wanting to telecommute. h. Hopefully I have helped you to at least consider telecommuting as a viable option to your job because it can certainly aid you when you find yourself incapable of going to work, taking care of a sick child, or even wanting to avoid the long drive.
