Throughout the piece, Simon and Burns both reveal snippets of the main tension in the text through instances of symbolism, meant to evoke the theme of the work, thoughtful imagery that plays with the expectations of the reader, and contradictions that highlight the central contention in The Corner, which is the purgatory of the titular corner and the tacit agreement between the locals and the officers who police them.
There are many occasions where the authors use imagery to evoke a more surreal outlook of the corner. The shootings are described in a very passionate way, “distinct reports of individual shots now blend into cacophony… they look like fireflies amid the crescendo.” (Simon, Burns, 187). ...back to the baseline. The process continues until each player reaches the opposite baseline, touches it and sprints back. Lateral Suicide The lateral suicide drill is a variation of the standard suicide. Instead of sprinting, the players move to each line of the court laterally with their knees bent and buttocks low, as if they were defending an opponent. Free Throw Drill Each player shoots and must make ten consecutive free throws. Another player is under the basket to rebound and pass the ball back to the shooting player. This drill is effective when the players have finished other grueling drills so they get used to the experience of shooting while exhausted. Seven-Spot Shooting The seven-spot shooting drill is an exercise to get your players comfortable in shooting jump shots from various areas of the floor. Divide the team into two groups and have each group line up at the corner of each basket. Establish seven shooting positions: starting corner, opposite corners, top of the key, free throw line and three spots on the perimeter. Each player in each group must make the shot in that position before the group can move on to the next position. Two-Player Pass and Shoot Two players alternate shots in this pass and shoot drill. One of your players passes the ball to another player positioned to shoot at a specified spot. Once that player shoots the ball, he runs to rebound his shot and passes to the other player running to his selected spot. That player shoots, rebounds and...

...you are taking a penalty shot. In a time like this you are most likely to have more pressure on your shoulders so you just needed to remember to stay calm in moments like this. When taking the kick you want to decide on which side you will be kicking it too. So if you are right footed then probably you would be kicking to the right side of the goal, and if you are left-footed then you would be kicking the ball to the left side of the net. You either want to go for the top corners or the bottom corners because they are usually the hardest to save. The worst thing you could kick it right at the goal, you never want to do that because that’s almost like a free save they didn’t even have to try....

...some offensive rebounds and put-backs. The centre should be good at making quick jump shots, hook shots, and using the backboard on his shots. Defensive -- On defense, the centre's main responsibility is to keep opponents from shooting by blocking shots and passes in the key area. They also are expected to get more rebounds because they're taller. 2. Power forward The power forwards are usually the next tallest players in the team, who are closest to the centre in physical attributes and playing style, but with more speed. A forward may play under the hoop or are expected to operate in the wings and corner areas. They must be strong and comfortable with a lot of physical play and must be an effective rebounder and effective inside shooter like the centre. The power forward is also expected to shoot from further distances than the centre. 3. Small forward The small forward is usually the shorter of the two forwards on the team. However, the small forward must have enough height and ability to play inside, and on top of that, play like the centres and power forwards, but also be able to guard. Small forwards are also the second or third best shooters from distance of the five positions as they also play defensive roles. 4. Shooting guard The shooting guard is potentially the shortest player in the team. However, he has to be good at dribbling fast, passing...

...with your feet. It is known that vision can help control the movement of the foot. Perfection of this skill allows intercepting the ball with ease and to handle the ball while keeping his/her head up. Step 2. Dribbling Dribbling is kicking and controlling the ball while in motion. To dribble you must kick the ball hard enough so it goes forward, but light enough to keep it within reach of your feet. Step 3. Passing Passing is kicking the ball to a team member allowing them to be able to assist you in winning the game. It helps to watch where your team members are so you can assume where they will be running to. By doing so, this allows you to kick the ball ahead of your teammate so they can run to the ball. Step 4. Shooting/Scoring Shooting/Scoring is the method to earn goal points. Combine the power of speed and accuracy you must kick the ball in between the goal posts past the keeper. You are allowed to use any part of your body to score except your hands. Step 5. Defending The most difficult part of this game is defending. Gun Control

...Ramos Professor Nancy Lubick CCJ 120 1/23/2013 Jared Lee Loughner shot blatantly into a crowd of people during an event that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords hosted’ called “Congress on Your Corner” I reacted like any other person would, I was shocked and in distressed. And I was more surprised at the fact that it had happen in the state that I was living in. It just surprises me how the mind of a killer works; you don’t know his first or next move, all you can do is be prepared. Although sadly it’s seemed that preparation was not in attendance that day. I feel that the justice system or us as people can not make the choice on who gets to live and who gets to die so with that being said I totally agree with the resolution. I believe that justice was served and I agree with the judge on the sentence he gave Jared Lee Loughner. In my opinion I think that if the judge would have gave him the death penalty it would have been in Jared’s favor. I say that because what man thinks they are going to come out alive after shooting at a crowd of innocent people with loaded semi-automatic pistol, in public? He was prepared to die that day. I believe that his mentality going into the shooting was to be killed during or after everything was done. I mean who wouldn’t have expected that? He was shooting at a crowd in public in addition to that the Congress woman was in attendance but yet there were no cops around to gun down the man. You honestly can’t prevent a killer from killing you can...

Why George Orwell Chose to Shoot the Elephant

...the elephant? There are many different reasons as to why George Orwell chose to shoot the Elephant in the short story, ”Shooting an Elephant”. In the following essay, there will be a wide and deep response of why George Orwell chose to shoot the elephant in the end. The first and primary reason for George Orwell shooting the elephant is simply Orwell being afraid. He was originally not intending to shoot the elephant; he merely brought the rifle for his own protection. “I had no intention of shooting the elephant – I had merely sent for the rifle to defend myself if necessary – and it is always unnerving to have a crowd following you. I marched down the hill, looking and feeling a fool, with the rifle over my shoulder and an ever-growing army of people jostling at my heels” . This quote first of all shows that Orwell actually did not intend the shooting of the elephant. It also shows the pressure he is being held upon by the Burmese crowd. It might seem a bit strange that Orwell feels pressured, as he is the superior and the Burmese is the inferior, but the thing is, Orwell is pressured because he is in fact the one without power in this situation. He is being laughed at and ridiculed buy the locals, which of course touches his emotions and he is greatly outnumbered by the thousand man crowd. So in reality a part of the cause of George Orwell shooting the elephant is social motives. Being pressured by the Burmese is not his only motive; Orwell also wants to feel himself as...

...Case Study Ericka Wilson 2/29/2012 Abstract In a small town in Michigan, the unbelievable happened. A 6 year old boy brought a gun to school and shot his first grade classmate in the school library. They had a playground scuffle the day before. After the shooting, he threw the gun down and ran out of the room. School authorities found him hiding in a corner and placed him in their office, where he calmly drew pictures as he waited. Police say that he told them the shooting was an accident and he had only been trying to scare her. In the following investigation, it was found that the shooter lived in a home where father and grandfather were in prison on gun-related charges. He lived with his mother, an uncle and a younger sibling. In searching the boy’s home, police found another stolen gun, a 12 gauge shot gun and drugs. You might be asking yourself, at what age are children held responsible for committing a criminal act. A law professor has pointed out that children under age 7 are not considered criminally responsible; those between 7 and 14 are presumed to lack responsibility and the state must prove otherwise; and those older than 14 are held accountable. A 19 year old male in the household who allegedly possessed the stolen gun was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Again, according to our legal system, children under 7 are not held responsible for crimes. It is said that a 6 yr. old cannot form criminal intent. In Michigan, at six year old boy shot killed...

...Performance preparation. There are many requirements needed in football to play the game successfully. Many of these requirements are skill related, such as passing. There are also many physical requirements such as having good cardiovascular fitness. A requirement such as cardiovascular fitness is essential in football as the pitch is between 100 yards (90m) and 130 yards in length (120m) and the width not less than 50 yards (45m) and not more than 100 yards (90m). And dependant on the position that performer could be running all over that pitch, for a long period of time. There are many requirements in my sport. Many of them are physical. Here is a list of all the physical components of my sport; * Speed- this is defined as the time taken to move a body part of whole through a movement over a pre- determined distance. In the position I play which is striker, you need speed to be able to get past defenders and to run and chase the ball if the midfielders pass the ball past the defenders. Although it is not just the strikers that use speed within the sport, it is utilized in every position. In general speed is used for chasing the ball down. It may not be physically running towards the ball, you may just be running back towards your own goal to defend it or in the opposite situation where the player could be running forward as quickly as he can to support the attackers. For example elite performers such as Luka Modric, who plays in midfield, have to utilize their speed...

Informative Essay On School Shooting

...Statistics have shown that a person would have to attend a school for 6,000 years before they would be apart of a school shooting (Bowers 1). They are very rare but still manage to happen. What would ever make a human being so crazy in the mind to burst out and kill innocent people? Recently, school shootings have become such a large issue in the United States. This affair needs to be resolved before it gets too far out of hand. On March 21, 2005, Jeffrey Weise attacked Red Lake High School (Enger 1). Before the attack, Weise shot and killed his grandfather, Daryl Lussier, and his grandfather’s girlfriend, Michelle Sigana. He then stole his grandfather’s tribal officer equipment that included: guns, a vest, and a squad car. Once he was in the school and had already opened gun fire, the police were able to corner him. He then ran into a nearby classroom and took his own life. Weise shot and killed 10 people that day, including himself (2). At the time, this shooting was considered one of the deadliest school shootings in Minnesota history. On April 16, 2007, Seung-Hui Cho opened fire on the Virginia Tech campus (Robertson 1). When the campus police first heard about the shooting,...

The only seat available when he joined the poker game was a chair that put his back to a door. Twice he asked another player Charles Rich to change seats with him, and on both occasions Rich refused. (257-270 O’Connor) Jack McCall entered the saloon not noticed by Wild Bill. McCall walked within a few feet of Wild Bill he then drew a pistol and yelled "Damn you Take that" (sorry for the language) before shooting Wild Bill. The bullet hit Wild Bill in the back of the head killing him instantly. The cards in his hand were a pair of eights, and a pair of Aces, and a red whole card this is now known as the dead man’s hand because of this. The bullet exited through Hickok's cheek striking another player in the...

Kicks In Soccer

...Taking a penalty kick in soccer can be a daunting proposition or a welcome opportunity. It all depends on how well you've prepared. Here are six tips to keep in mind that will help your penalty kicks reach the back of the net consistently: You have the most control over shots taken with the inside of the foot. Accuracy and consistency are more important than power.   A good time to practice penalty kicks is immediately following training. Doing so can simulate having to refocus in the fatigued state you may face later in or following a match. Find a couple of comfortable shots and practice them over and over until they become automatic. Repetition is crucial. You should have one go-to, primary shot, and another secondary shot in case the keeper...
