I want to thank everyone for being here today. The whole Smith family is grateful for your thoughts and prayers. I have been preparing for this day for about 20 years. I thought my father was going to die 20 years ago. He had a heart attack. His brother had died in his 60’s of a heart attack and his father had died of a heart attack in his 60’s. My father was 61, not a good record. So I cherished every day I had with him these last twenty years.

To make it another 20 years is truly remarkable. We owe that mostly to two things: my mother and his grandchildren. My mom and dad were married almost 49 years, another pretty remarkable thing. I will never, ever forget how well my mother took care of my father. As with everything in our house, she was in charge of his health, thank god. Thank you mom for all you did.

My father loved his grandchildren. Every single time I spoke to him he would say, how’s the baby. In the last couple of years I would say what baby? He would say you know who I’m talking about. I would say dad she’s ten. I said to him one day you treat your grandchildren better than your own children, he said that‘s because I had to raise you! My father could be brutally honest. My father’s happiest days were having everyone at his house, all his children and grand children. Many a birthday or anniversary we were all in my parent’s backyard having a great time. One of the great memories I have is being at my cousin Michele’s wedding last summer. We were all there. And if we were at a wedding and there was a microphone he was going to use it. Of course he sang My Way by Frank Sinatra. He was weak then so he sat at the table and sang. We were all at his side including all his grandchildren watching. He belted that thing out really well. I will never forget the smiles and tears on everyone’s face.
My father was an old school guy. Work all day, come home, have supper and watch TV. He was proudly a Sergeant Major. I remember a few years ago him telling me he was in WWII. I was floored! I didn’t believe him. I said, “Dad you were in the Korean War not WWII”. He said no I lied about my age and went in at 17. That was 1944 which made sense. He was a proud military man. He never talked about either war even when we tried to push him to talk. Pretty remarkable.
My father was one of the funniest people I ever met, usually not intentionally. He had these great sayings. One of his favorites was “there’s no anchor in your ass”, meaning if you don’t like it get out. I heard that one a lot growing up. Another was “I like jelly”. One day out of the blue he just said I like jelly for no apparent reason. Those two sayings are still used in my house and I imagine always will.
My father was a huge sports fan, Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox. Earlier in his life a big NY Giants fan. There were so many games when I would be watching, yelling at the TV, that my wife would say CALL TOM. I would call him and talk about the game; no matter what the score he would always say they STINK. I think the Red Sox were his favorite, maybe because they hadn’t won in 86 years, his whole life. I will never forget the 2004 World Series. The way the Red Sox came back against the Yankees, something of course my father never believed would happen. I remember when the Red Sox finally won the World Series. I was sitting all alone with a tear running down my face and all I could think about was my father. He had watched them for 77 years without a championship.
To the outside world my father was a little crass. I remember working at the National Guard right after college, a place he worked most of his life. His ex-co-workers would say to me, “How was he at home”, implying he wasn’t that nice at the office. I would say he’s great at home it must be this place. Like father like son.
I admire my dad for the way he lived, his love of family, and always trying to do the right thing. I will miss him every day.
A fairly simple life, but in a lot of ways truly remarkable.

...Kyla Jones SW Death and Dying Oakland University Abstract Death is something I personally think about a lot. I have not experienced much loss, but the losses I have experienced have affected me enough to the point of thinking about why people die at random times of the day. I have had a total of five deaths of family and friends in my 20 years of life. They have all been within a few years of each other but the first death there was a larger gap in between until the next death. The first death I experience was my Grandma’s best friend Kim, then my Grandma’s Sister Carol, then my great great grandpa, then my father and last but not lease my friend who was like a younger brother to me. Some of these had a major impact on how I view death and how I am when death is a topic of concern for most people. At the age of 20 I can say I am not afraid of death because I have accepted that it will happen to anyone, and if it is your time to go then God believes it is your time to go. I look back and wished I handled myself a little different when it came to certain deaths, but once I experienced a death of someone really close to me that was the one that really made me question what is the point of living if we are going to die anyways? But if I experience another death soon, I believe I know how to deal with it head on and be able to help the other people who are affected by it as well. I am very thankful for having people surround me and explain to me more so what death is vs just hiding...

Search For Justice In Hamlet

...In the revenge play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, William Shakespeare craftily entertains his audience by portraying every person's “hidden” desires. Shakespeare uses the search for justice as one of the major tools of Hamlet to find meaning in killing his uncle. Along with anger and pity, the search for justice creates an interesting dynamic that always keeps the reader guessing. Hamlet’s meaning in life is to avenge his father’s death, he finished his life quest at the end of the book and ironically in the end of his life. The search for justice is the reason for any action that takes place on the play. Due to the snowball effect, every action that takes place creates another problem, therefore creating a better plot. However,...

Changing My Life: A Life Changed My Perspective Of Life

...Looking back of the memories; my dad’s smile, laugh, and all of our adventure’s is what I pictured. My heart was shattered and it was unfathomable to believe that my dad was possibly gone forever. A memory stuck out to me a month before my dad went missing. We were at the cabin sledding down the steep hills, laughing, feeling inevitably euphoric and stuck in time. The sun was shining through the trees and I remember looking up at the sky, seeing it was clear blue as I layed down in the snow, with my sled beside me. I could hear dad laughing, running down the hill to lay next to me, with that gigantic smirk on his face, “Cheyanne i’ll be right there!.” And thinking about that makes my heart smile because I know he was happy as he can be, as I was too. Time is fleeting by as it seemed because on April 10, 2010, the case of my dad was already forgotten from everyone. Everyone gave up on finding him and it was impossible to move forward when there was no evidence or tracks of him, so the case ended. After a couple years, the memories of my dad faded, I lost hope of him being found, and I was still in deep shock. I had forgotten his smile, his laugh, everything about him. I went to school everyday after he passed away...

The boy because he is very small and then you get the dad’s point of view on the boy. The narrator’s effect on the story makes us feeling like we are being drawn in to the story, we follows him, and get sympathise with the little boy and the dad. The narrator relationship is important so we can understand the text. The dad is thinking a lot about the trips he took with his own father when he was a little boy. Grief and Mourning

...Sarah. R. Dominick Prof. Cherisse Flanagan Developmental Psychology April 30, 2013 Grief and Mourning Hello. My name is Sarah R. Dominick, and I am a nineteen-year-old, single, Caucasian American female. I was born in Denver, Colorado to a single mother of three, who was at that time in a lower-class, blue-collar, nonreligious state of being. While growing up, it was always very apparent, and still is apparent, that when our family loses someone, everyone suffers great loss. I have had three family members die throughout my lifetime so far, and every time this type of event takes place, our family immediately seeks each other out. Wherever the deceased happens to be, several relatives from across the country are there within two days of the occurrence. I take great pride in the fact that my family members are willing to go to such lengths to be with their family members when they most need it, and as immediately as possible. After the initial gathering of friends and family takes place, a ceremony is normally in the works. My experience is that our family is geared towards having a memorial service instead of a funeral service. Often we take advantage of the deceased’s hobbies or interests and incorporate them into the ceremony. For example, my great uncle David passed away five years ago. In order to celebrate his life and what he loved, almost everyone wore some type of Harley Davidson memorabilia because he enjoyed riding his motorcycle so much. After the ceremony, there...

...of death I knew for sure an amazing dad he was, one who I would never give up for the world. When I reflect upon my life without him I realize there are some things this experience had taught me. In this essay you will read about the experience I had in losing my dad and what I have learnt and come to accept. When my father passed away, 10years ago, my whole life changed, my grades started slipping, I started skipping classes, and I dropped all extra-curricular activities (netball, homework club). I started to become depressed. I felt like there was a hole in my life. He was the dearest person to me. Just when I thought it could never get worse, I dropped out of school due to the lack of school fee payments, a month later I was transferred to the public school and to think that was bad, I became homeless. With all the changes made I tried to settle in with everyone else but I could not adopt to the changes. I still wanted to see his glorious face and his wide smile picking me up after school. Every morning I still wake up thinking that he is there drinking his tea in the room, watching his favorite programs. Then suddenly the truth comes rushing up to me and I realize that it is just a dream hanging around me still, and a cold despair fall upon me. Despite my apparent tranquility and surface brightness, I feel empty inside. My Father’s death was a really sobering experience I’ve passed through. It was the most devastating loss in my life. Hero's Paper

...risking your life for other people’s protection sounds like a hero to me. One thing that is absolutely required to be in the U.S Army is bravery. Knowing that your career requires you going over sea’s from time to time and the risk that you just might not end up coming back. That all would require bravery at the most. The average soldier goes on about three tours every 10 years. My dad has been in the army for exactly 16 going on 17 years and has gone over seas 5 times, also will be going once again in February of 2010. He had served in Bosnia in 1996 thru 1997 also in Iraq from 2003 to 2004. The third place he served was Afghanistan from 2005 to 2006 and also Afghanistan from 2006 to 2007. Being a soldier comes with responsibilities such as being sent overseas. When being sent overseas a lot can occur from tragedies to blessings. My dad had made a comment in the interview I did with the Hero’s Project that “Every day you wake up is a blessing wile your at war, whether you’re in throbbing pain of dehydrated from the horrid heat”. A lot of things happen to the soldiers over war. My dad has come home with story after story. He has gotten to injury overseas. He received the Purple Heart for both as well. Drama Reaction of Death of a Salesman

...DRAMA REACTION OF DEATH OF A SALESMAN ENG 125 DRAMA REACTION OF DEATH OF A SALESMAN Death of a salesman and Hamlet are both great stories and great dramas that over the age other than being taught in school has been left in the dust. The author of death of a salesman is Arthur Miller and his death of a salesman is known to be used in conveying social matter on the American society. Death of a salesman shows how the American dream can be harder to achieve than some people expect it to be. Arthur uses time to his advantage as he uses flashbacks to at one point have a conversation with his dead brother of a past conversation that he is showing other people as he is playing cards. They are used to show his brothers success to try and push him in the right direction for willies sake. His sons also go back to see their past and recollect. Gripping with a influence of the past is a theme that all literature has become in modern literature and of Death of a Salesman ("What Literary Devices Does Miller Use In "Death Of A Salesman"?", 2015).  The American Dream The American dream in my eyes is for wealth and happiness and many people would have the same dream and thoughts of what the American dream is and how they would precede it. Willy is always looking for a way to fix his sons after their failures and he uses the aspect of foreshadowing to try and show that even with the best of wises there is not always a way to fix problems for people that do not want to be fixed or that cannot...
