In The Enchanted, by Rene Denfeld, the lady, an unnamed death-row investigator, is looking into the intricacies of the case of York, a man convicted of raping and murdering several women. At first, these two characters, the inmate and the investigator, seem to be foils of each other due to their roles and their actions throughout their lifetime. York is a lawless criminal and has no regard for human life, and the lady on the other hand, must work closely with the law in order to save York’s life. However, as the story progresses, the author reveals more and more similarities between the lady and York. Thus, the author could be suggesting that perhaps, convicted criminals don’t have to be so different from normal people. While The Enchanted is a fiction novel, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson is a memoir that describes his career representing wrongly convicted criminals some of whom are on death row. Although McMillian was eventually freed from prison, the consequences he suffered caused him to suffer what was probably an early death: “Walter died on September 11, 2013. He remained kind and charming until the very end, despite his increasing confusion from the advancing dementia” (Stevenson, 311).
