Did you know that before the Gowanus Canal was a man-made canal, it was a salt marsh? Not only that but none of the achievements would have been accomplished without the help of the Nile. There is always a connection between geography and how society lives. The Gowanus is a waterway located in South Brooklyn. It’s the prime attraction near the neighborhoods of Park Slope and Carroll Gardens. The Nile River is shared by eleven countries but is the primary water source for Egypt and Sudan. Although they bear some superficial similarities , the differences between the Nile and the Gowanus are clear. Even Though both the Gowanus Canal and the Nile River Used to hold food for their people they had different types of food. Looking back at the text called “Life Along The Nile” it states “ Along the river were fruit trees, and fish swam in the Nile in great numbers. While if we look at the text called “ The Gowanus Canal, Then and Now” it states “ Native Americans grew corn and drew oysters from the creek for food.” The Nile contains fish while the Gowanus held oysters. But living near large bodies of water also can have negative effects on the development of society. The Gowanus and the Nile both flooded but had different results when they withdrew. As the Gowanus spilled into the street after heavy rains it brought pollution into the street. While on the other hand when the Nile flooded for 6 months at the same time each year it left behind soil which was great for growing wheat, beans, or even cotton. The Egyptians benefitted from the floods because they were left with rich soil which was an important essential for farming.But when the Gowanus flooded it brought pollution, so people around the Gowanus faced challenges and disadvantages because the flooding caused businesses and houses to be
