The History of Jesus and Muhammad
The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord."
--Luke 2:10-11
The religion Christianity was founded on the life and teachings Of Jesus Christ. Around or just before the Common Era, about 2000 years ago Jesus was born in a small town called Bethlehem. Jesus was born unto a devout Jewess by the name of Mary and a carpenter named Joseph. Jesus was conceived by a miracle of the Holy Spirit before Mary and Joseph had any sexual relationship. Jesus was born in Bethlehem because the Roman emperor stated that all families register for a census in their ancestral hometowns. Joseph and Mary made the long difficult trip to Bethlehem, only to find that all the inns were full, with no inns to stay at, Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable among the animals. The Gospels do not talk a lot about Jesus’ early life, but some information can be traced back to some references elsewhere. Jesus was from a town called Nazareth, where he probably worked with his father and trained to be a carpenter. At the age of twelve Jesus wander away from his parents into Jerusalem to discuss religion in the temple; the rabbis were very impressed on the knowledge, understanding and answers when discussing the Torah. When his parents finally found him, Jesus asked, “Didn’t you know I would be in my Father’s house?” This tale indicates some sense of Jesus mission, his knowledge of the Jewish tradition, and his own personal connection with God.
Then we don’t know anything else about Jesus, until around the age of thirty, where the four gospels agree that Jesus’ first act was to be baptized by John the Baptist. There are a couple of translations as to why Jesus wanted to be Baptist, one is that Jesus was baptized on behalf of all sinful humans, the other was so that John the Baptist could begin his ministry and to announce that the messiah is here amongst us. This event marked the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, some theorize that it was this moment the Human Jesus became the divine.
After Jesus was baptized he went on a forty-day fasting period in the desert, while in the desert Jesus was tempted by Satan to use his spiritual powers, Jesus refused (Fisher). After returning from the fasting in the desert, Jesus began to gather his disciples (12), those who saw him as the Messiah. Jesus gathered his disciples and told them to leave all worldly possessions, human attachments behind and to follow him, to give more attention to the life of the spirit. Jesus then spent one to three years teaching and working miracles among his disciples and large crowds. As Jesus traveled it is told that he performed many miracles, his miracles included turning water into wine, walking on water, healing the sick, taking a small meal and turning it into enough to feed a large crowd of hungry people, casting out demons, and raising a man from the dead. The primary teachings of Jesus focused on love for the “the kingdom of god”, two of his greatest commandments are: to love God and to love your fellow man (love your neighbor as yourself). The commandment Love God means that one should put no other God or Gods before him, to live your life for God and not for material possessions. To love thy neighbor as you love yourself means: to love and help everyone as you would yourself.
In Jesus’ teachings he said that God will forgive those that repent their sins and were sincere, will be forgiven and be allowed to enter heaven. Jesus and his teachings quickly became popular and grew quickly, but so did opposition from local leaders. Roman rulers were uncomfortable with the perception that he was the Messiah, which would free the Jews from Roman rule. Some government officials and prominent Jews were becoming suspicious Of Jesus and his teachings. The leader of Galilee felt that Jesus was causing a uprising against the Romans, the Jewish leaders were not happy by Jesus’ interpretations of Jewish law, and his power with the people.
In the Gospels Jesus suggested to his disciples many times that the end was near, but his disciples did not understand or want to accept the idea. This is represented by the “Last Supper” that took place on the night before his death. On this night Jesus also predicted that one of his disciples would betray him. Judas Iscariot one of Jesus’ disciples led the Roman soldiers to Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. As he was being arrested his disciple, Peter defended him with his sword, Jesus instructed him to put the sword away, and said for all who draw the sword will die by the sword, and Jesus was led away to be questioned by the high priest.
Once he arrived before the high priest, he was asked: Are you the Messiah? He said very little but affirmed he was the Messiah. He was judged worthy of death for blasphemy, and was sent to Roman governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate. At first Pilate ordered Jesus to be wiped and set free, but this angered the crowd, so to please the crowd he sentenced Jesus to death by crucifixion. Jesus was beaten, clothed in a mock-royal purple robe and crown of thorns, and then executed by crucifixion at Golgotha. After hanging there for six hours Jesus’ cried out “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me” and took his last breath.
Jesus’ body was removed from cross by Joseph of Arimathea and placed in a tomb that was carved into a rock, then a large stone was placed covering the entrance. His mother and a couple of others were the only ones present. Those same women came to his tomb the following Sunday to cover his body with spices, only to find the large stone moved and the tomb empty. After Jesus’ resurrection, he appeared before his disciples, where he passed through a locked door to show them, yet he was not a ghost by allowing them to touch his flesh and ate with them. The resurrection of Jesus, made non-believers into believers, and made those who once believed to believe again. For many of his followers by what they had witnessed believe that Jesus had been God in human form.

The History of Muhammad

Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570 AD, shortly after his birth his father passed away and he lost his mother at the age of six. Muhammad was then raised by his uncle, where he worked as a shepherd. At the age of nine he accompanied his uncle on a trip to Syria and Arabia. While on this trip with his uncle, a Christian monk noticed marks on Muhammad’s body, and indicated he was a prophet. At the age of 25, Muhammad married his wealthy employer Khadija from Mecca, a widow for 15 years, and remained his wife until her death 24 years later.
When Muhammad reached his late thirties, Muhammad would make regular visits to a cave in Mount Hira, to be alone and to contemplate. At the age of forty Muhammad received his first revelation from God. He returned from a visit to the cave, and told his wife (Khadija) he was going mad or he really is a prophet, because he had been visited by an angel. The angel (Gabriel) approached Muhammad and said “Proclaim” but because he was a reluctant prophet, he said I am not a proclaimer. The angel insisted that he proclaim, finally Muhammad gave in and cried out what shall I proclaim. With this the angel began to announcing the first words which became the Qur’an.
During many visits and additional visits from Gabriel, Muhammad believed that he indeed had been chosen as the messenger of God and proclaimed as he had been commanded by God, to preach to the people what he had learned: that God is one (Allah). In the three years of revelations, Muhammad only gained forty followers. Muhammad and his followers faced heavy persecution, and later turned into open violence. Some of the members were stoned, covered in dirt while praying, beaten and put into prisons. Later Muhammad got the news that he had gained followers in a city called Yathrib, 280 miles north of Mecca.
Muhammad and his followers were banned from the city of Mecca for three years, but later returned to Mecca, to face more persecution. At the age of 51, the height of Muhammad’s suffering due to the loss of his wife and uncle, it is said that he passed through the seven heavens into the Divine Proximity. Muhammad was recognized as a prophet, by the pilgrims from Mecca from Medina and invited him and his followers to come to their city. Once Muhammad and his followers moved to Medina, Muhammad’s view changed from persecution to appreciation.
After he established himself in Medina, the people of Medina went to war with the city of Mecca. The first battle with the Meccans was won by Muhammad and his followers in 624; this was a sign that God was on their side. Later another battle Muhammad and his followers were not victorious and Muhammad was wounded. Then in 627, the Meccans attacked the city of Medina and won. In 630 C.E. Muhammad attacked the city Mecca, and defeated them, here he rededicated the Ka’ba temple to Allah.
Muhammad and his followers returned to Mecca, and many of the Meccans heeded the warning of those who tried to thwart God’s prophets and converted to Islam. After returning to Medina, Muhammad became very ill, and gave his final instructions and promised to meet them in paradise, Muhammad passed away in 632 C.E.

The Impact of Death

For Christianity, the death of Jesus had a great impact on their religion. Jesus died for all the sins of mankind and to save humanity. Jesus teachings were about love despite that he was questioned and persecuted. The resurrection of god made believers from non-believers, Jesus’ teachings were questioned because of proof, but with his resurrection showed that he was God in human form.

There were many that tried to take Muhammad place after his death, but none were successful as Muhammad. This made Muhammad’s life and teachings more appreciated and cherished, and making an impact on the Islam religion. Muhammad’s life is very important to the Muslims, so much that they copy his qualities in order to become a good Muslims. Muhammad taught that being selflessness and kindness create a just moral order, as it embodies God’s commandments.

Reflection Paper; Jesus: the Missing History

...REFLECTION PAPER Last November 13, 2014, our section watched a Discovery Channel Documentary entitled “Jesus: The Missing History” that was hosted by a biblical scholar Kent Dobson. The documentary focuses on the truthfulness of what is written in the Bible regarding the life of Jesus Christ. The documentary has this strong impact on me that the same questions that the speaker, Kent Dobson, have in his mind. Since I was a child I have cling to the Bible verse in John 20:29 saying “Blessed are they that have not seen and yet have believed.” This line was said by Jesus Christ to His disciple Thomas when he doubted the resurrection of Christ. And after having the same questions as Kent Dobson and, somehow, the same doubt as disciple Thomas has I have cling more to the Bible verse in John 20:29. Aside from that, life of Jesus Christ is written in the Holy Bible which, according to Institute for Creation Research online article, is historically testable. Moreover, the Institute for Creation Research stated on their article entitled Biblical Data are Historically Testable that there were these two of the greatest 20th-century archaeologists named William F. Albright and Nelson Glueck who both lauded the Bible as being the single most accurate source document from history. And even though the two archaeologists were non-Christian and secular in their training and personal beliefs, they emphasize that the Bible has been found to be accurate in its places, dates, and records of events...

The Historical Jesus

...THE QUEST FOR HISTORICAL JESUS. DATE: MAY, 2016 It is worthy of note that the first four centuries of the life of the Church was nearly marred by the Christological heresies. Argument about the person and work of Jesus Christ. Arguments abound concerning the Historicity of the Christian religion, while many has maintained that Jesus had not intended a development of faith from his teachings, the quest to identify the historical Jesus and differentiate between the Jesus of history and the Jesus of faith is going on. One of those devastating heresies called Docetism appeared in the time of John the beloved, propounded by the Marcions and the Gnostics, a teaching that denied the human nature of Jesus Christ claiming that the body is matter and matter is evil, so that the body was just a “Phantom” a body merely given a human appearance in nature but not necessarily human, because they believe that God cannot associate with evil. So John wrote in his first epistle that “every Spirit that confesses not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God” 1John 4:3. The Jesus of History is the Jesus of the Historical Quests which is by now is on the 3rd stage. The Christ of Faith is the Christ of the Christian belief. To have any sort of separation between the two is like having a separation between the WORD and the CHRIST contrary to the Christian faith that was in the beginning with God as mentioned by John in John 1:2, 14. One cannot separate Jesus from Christ or try to successfully...

Jesus Existed

...Jaimie Scherer GS 2210 Jesus of Nazareth The Existence of Jesus Final Paper 2.27.15 Introduction To this day, the existence of Jesus Christ is still a debate. Not a debate on whether or not He turned water into wine, or was the Son of God, but His actual, human existence is still questioned. The existence of Jesus, and who He was, is a basis of world history. To dispel Jesus’ existence would be rewriting history and the Christianity religion as a whole. Not everyone has to believe the gospels, but Jesus did exist and was an important political figure to the world. Religion is something that is meant to bring people together to create family outside of our bloodline. However, religion is putting larger walls up between us and is the cause of the world’s wars, both past and present. Jesus didn’t want religion to break us down, but bring us together, without judgment, prejudice, or different beliefs. Even though there is much documentation, including outside of the gospels, of Jesus’ existence, people are still skeptical and question His existence. Including documentation, there has been physical, archeologist evidence supporting the places Jesus visited, walked through, and stayed. This paper will outline that Jesus was a person that walked this earth and was very impactful in our history. Continuous efforts of debating this topic should be put to rest and we should discuss Jesus in our history lessons, not as a religious figure, but as a historian who made...

...Christ,” which is evidence of its Catholic roots.[1] “Mass” comes from the Latin missa, and refers to the service of Eucharist, or the Lord’s Supper. To the Protestant ear, Mass is best understood as a daily service of prayers in which Christians partake of the Lord’s supper, and the “mass of Christ” was specially devoted to the celebration of Christ’s birth. Christian celebrate Christmas because it is jesus birthday and jesus die for us. These days, one of the questions I often receive about Jesus has to do with his marital status. This question didn’t just drop out of heaven, however. It was born of the popularity of Dan Brown’s controversial novel, The Da Vinci Code. This novel advocates the thesis that Jesus was in fact married to the woman we know as Mary Magdalene, that they had a child together, and that this “truth” was covered up by the church for self-serving reasons. Many readers of The Da Vinci Code, believing the fictional history of the novel to be true, have been buzzing about the possibility of Jesus’ having been married. The people in the story is Joseph Adam Jesus god David eve ibraham lkdsjasjssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss [pic] 0 Why do people call Christmas? The word “Christmas” derives from an Old English term that dates back to 1038: “Cristes Maesse.” The term literally means “the mass of Christ,” which is evidence of its Catholic roots.[1] “Mass” comes from the Latin missa, and refers to the service of Eucharist, or the Lord’s Supper. ...Review of Knowing Jesus Through the Old Testament by Christopher J.H. Wright James Pruch Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary May 2012 Introduction Dr. Christopher J. H. Wright (Ph. D., Cambridge) is an Old Testament scholar, an ordained Anglican ministry, and is the director of international ministries with the Langham Partnership International. In Knowing Jesus Through the Old Testament, Wright seeks to display the continuity between the Hebrew Scriptures and Jesus’ self-understanding. Wright maintains that Jesus’ self-understanding rooted in the history of salvation that God planned and worked for Israel. This review will show that Wright’s book provides the reader with a rich understanding of Jesus’ unique identity as the Hebrew Messiah and gives helpful insights for understanding how the OT should be viewed from the Christian perspective. Brief Summary Wright’s thesis is that one cannot fully know the story of Jesus unless he sees “it in the light of a much longer story which goes back for many centuries.”1 He works this out in five chapters, which he summarizes at the end of the book: We have seen that the Old Testament tells the story which Jesus completed. It declares the promise which he fulfilled. It provides the pictures and models which shaped his identity. It programmes a mission which he accepted and passed on. It teaches a moral orientation to God and the world which he endorsed, sharpened, and laid as the foundation for obedient discipleship.2 He argues...

A Look at Judaism and Christianity

...Perhaps the strangest thing about that is that they have the same history. It is true that they both claim Abraham as the father of their religion, but it is much more involved than that. Not only do they share Abraham, but they also share Holy Scriptures. The Jewish Torah is comprised of the same first five books that make up the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. Essentially the history of Judaism and Christianity is exactly the same up to a certain point in history. Even though the Jewish people do not use the entire Christian Old Testament as their Holy Scriptures, neither do they discount any of the scriptures not included in The Torah. Where the two religions reach a drastic split in beliefs starts in the Christian New Testament and the story of Jesus Christ. In the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament there are hundreds of prophecies stating that there will be a Christ that will come and save all of Yahweh’s chosen people. The Christians believe Jesus was that savior and thus named him Jesus Christ. The Jews however believe that their savior is yet to come and they keep a watchful eye for his coming. With so many thousands of years of sharing the same history, and to now see the complete difference between the two religions, this is just evidence to the case that one man can really make a difference. The Doctrinal aspects of these two religions were at one point the exact same. With the introduction of Jesus however they have changed and could not seem more different. Judaism...

The Quest for the Historical Jesus

...Historical Jesus INTRODUCTION Over the centuries scholars from around the world have written a lot about religion, its meaning, relevance and contribution to humanity. There have been many speculations upon the nature and historical background of Jesus Christ. Many scholars have tried to dig into the few clues as to His identity and come up with a human side to which we can all relate. The study of Christianity and how it relates to Jesus Christ is very important to the whole world. Concerning the issue of Christianity, for example, the majority of people are taught in most schools and churches that Jesus Christ was an actual historical figure and that the only controversy regarding him is that some people accept him as the Son of God and the Messiah, while others do not. While the historicity of Jesus is the most debated subject in the field of religion today, the most enduring and profound controversy in this subject is whether or not Jesus Christ really existed. This paper will discuss who Jesus is, the controversy and biblical sources based on the views of scholars surrounding the historicity of Jesus. Finally, this paper will give Biblical evidence that Jesus existed. WHO IS JESUS? It is generally accepted that Jesus was truly a man who walked the earth 2000 years ago. Almost every religion teaches that Jesus was a prophet, excellent teacher or a Godly man. The Bible tells us, “I and the Father are one.” This indicates that Jesus was...

The Shroud of Turin

...of Turin is Jesus of Nazareth’s Authentic Burial Cloth The Source of the Image Revealed Under the cover of darkness, Jesus of Nazareth was arrested and brought to trial before the Jewish authorities. His captors repeatedly punched him in the face and spit on him, but that was only the beginning of his suffering. Early in the morning they brought him to Pontius Pilate, the Roman installed governor of the Judean Province. Pilate ordered that Jesus be flogged and crucified. Jesus was then beaten with a “Roman instrument called the flagrum” (Oxley 125). The flagrum is a whip that was capable of causing dreadful injuries. In fact, “The injuries caused by the scourging would have resulted in traumatic shock” (Oxley 162). In the interim, the soldiers were allowed to have some cruel fun with him. They created a crown out of a thorn bush and forced it onto his head, piercing his scalp and forehead. As the final stage of his punishment, Jesus was nailed to the cross through his wrists and feet. After he died, a Roman soldier pierced Jesus’ side with a spear in an upward thrust toward his heart. After taking him down from the cross, he was wrapped in a linen sheet and his body placed in a tomb. The linen cloth that enveloped him has graphically recorded the gruesome details of his chastisement. The linen cloth that Jesus was wrapped in is now known as the Shroud of Turin. Even though those who believe it is a medieval fake have challenged its authenticity, the Shroud’s history, weave pattern...

Jesus: Fact from Fiction

...Jesus: Fact from Fiction Christianity is currently the largest religion in the world with approximately 2.1 billion people identifying themselves as Christians. Jesus is the central focus of attention and worship in Christianity, and is held by most Christians to be the Messiah, foretold in the Hebrew Bible or “Old Testament”. They believe him to be the savior of mankind, and the son of God. However, in modern times, the use of critical scholarship in analysis of the Bible and to the New Testament Gospels in particular, has lead to an accelerating rate of disintegration in the traditional Christian belief system. The term "scholarship" implies the application of the scientific method of the evaluating evidence on the basis of objective standards unhindered from any personal involvement or biases. The main source of information on Jesus is from the Christian Gospels. Some scholars claim that the sources on which the Gospels are based were written within the living memory of Jesus' lifetime. There are four such Gospels the earliest being Mark (68-73 AD), followed by Matthew (70-100 AD), Luke (80-100 AD), and John (90-110 AD). Many conservative Christians accept these writings as evidence for a historical Jesus and as an account of his life and death. According to the Christian Gospels, Jesus was born in Bethlehem between 6 BC and 6 AD. The Gospel Mark, reports that Jesus was "the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon" he also states that Jesus had sisters. Nothing of Jesus...

The Authority of the Bible

...semester. Many thoughts will come from what I have written during the class and from the Core of Christianity, Elmer Towns. The topics I chosen to discuss is Does the Bible have authority, Did Jesus claim to be God and How can we be confident that Jesus is returning. Let us first look at the word authority. Authority means “the power to determine, adjudicate, or otherwise settle issues or disputes; jurisdiction; the right to control, command, or determine.” ("authority.") This authority can come from a teacher, pastor, principle or anyone else that has the ability to control or command someone or something. The Biblical definition, states that authority is “the legal and/or moral right to exercise power, or power that is rightly possessed. We recognize the Bible is the most significant book in the history of civilization. In the context of Jewish history, the Bible’s impact on politics, history, and religion is without comparison. Along with establishing the covenant-based legitimacy of the Jewish people and their history, the Bible’s political impact is exemplified through prophetic politics, the power of kings, and the effects of political authority. Biblical archeology has discovered biblical structures which supports the historical validity of the Bible. The Bible’s effect on history, politics, and religion has shaped the world we live in today. The fact that the Bible has stood the test of time and has not been destroyed, even though there have been several attempts made...

By this providential initiative, he gave us an opportunity to rediscover the beauty of the journey of faith begun on the day of our Baptism, which made us children of God and brothers and sisters in the Church. A journey which has as its ultimate end our full encounter with God, and throughout which the Holy Spirit purifies us, lifts us up and sanctifies us, so that we may enter into the happiness for which our hearts long. I offer a cordial and fraternal greeting to the Patriarchs and Major Archbishops of the Eastern Catholic Churches present. The exchange of peace which I will share with them is above all a sign of the appreciation of the Bishop of Rome for these communities which have confessed the name of Christ with exemplary faithfulness, often at a high price. With this gesture, through them, I would like to reach all those Christians living in the Holy Land, in Syria...

...Is Jesus really just a copy of pagan myths? Andres D. Laboy Bible Class September 2, 2015 Introduction A lot of people criticize the Bible, Jesus and Christians, they speak blasphemies and every one of those people are wrong. I’ll be here saying what I think of the video, I’ll do it because it’s sad that they don’t accept the truth and look for other things. They twist things around. Body So is Jesus really just a copy of pagan Myths? No, of course not, Jesus is the real thing. There is history, there is proof that he existed. Pagan myths are myths for a reason. Myths aren’t real. People relate Jesus with pagan myths because they are similar but they aren’t accurate, they are not real. Like one of the pagan gods that people relate to Jesus is Krishna. The myth goes that Krishna was born of a virgin, but her parents had children before her and so the myth goes on. These myths just contradict themselves and different cultures have different views of them. Not like Jesus, Jesus is seen like himself, like a true person. Another pagan god that is similarised with Jesus is Horus. Saying that Horus has the same story, that he was born from a virgin and was baptized. That he became savior of humanity. Horus story maybe similar to Jesus but, its just not real; again myths are myths for as reason. There isn’t any proof he actually existed, there isn’t any actual evidence, but Jesus does. Historians see Jesus like a person of history, there...
