The Hunt for Seasonal Workers Crosses Borders

Lots of companies encounter the challenge of finding seasonal workers. These seasonal workers are needed during the companies’ sales peak, when a company needs to produce and, or provide service within a certain period of time. Seasonal workers are excessive resources for a company that needs to increase the amount of workers in their workforce during sale peak throughout the year. The peak in the demand for labor is too steep to handle with overtime, and the type of work can’t be outsourced to dishwashers or lifeguards in another location. The main option for employers is to find workers who want a summer job. (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2009).

If companies cannot fill vacant seasonal jobs with workers under the H-2B visas, the companies could use temporary employees or fill positions by outsourcing. Using temporary employees and outsourcing do not build an in-house pool of talent, but by these means staffing levels can be quickly and easily modified” (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2009). Overtime is also a temporary solution but may exhaust the company’s employees. It is the companies’ decision to choose which solution works best in each case. For short-term labor peaks overtime may be the solution but for a longer season temporary employees or outsourcing is a better choice.
