It was a bright sunny warm Saturday morning in the summer of 2011 and the time was 11:00am and I was coming home from my soccer game with my mom and sister in Butler. My team had won our game and I was happy, but that all changed in the blink of an eye. First of all, my team had won the game 2-0 and my mom, sister and I were going to meet my grandma at Red Lobster after my game. As we were driving down the road we saw five cars in the other lane and there was one Jeep speeding past each one coming straight at us. As the driver of the Jeep came to the last car he swerved back into the other lane almost hitting us head on. “Mom, how fast was the Jeep going” I asked. “We were going 60MPH and he flew by us so he must have been going at least 90MPH” she said in amazement. …show more content…
“Me to Seth he had to be at least two feet away from hitting us.” My mom explained. “Mom, what would have happened if the Jeep didn’t get over to the other lane.” I said in confusion. “Seth, it would have been a horrible accident and I am glad he got over to the other lane when he did because we would probably not be here right now or we would be badly injured.” explained my mom. After all that commotion my mom did not hesitate to call my family members and tell them would had happened. As my mom called my family members each one was so happy that we did not get in a wreck with the Jeep. “Hello, you will not believe what just happened.” my mom said happily to my dad. “What happened Heather?” said my dad. “We were almost in a really bad car accident with a Jeep after Seth’s game but we are alright and I cannot move my side mirror because of how fast the Jeep was going. The wind of the Jeep passing are car had pushed back against the window and it is stuck.” explained my

The Glory and Wreckage O

...Dan A Parallel Message Analysis of Ecovia’s Don’t Speed Speeding plays a role in over one third of all fatal car crashes. If this amount of people speeding could be cut in half, thousands of innocent lives could be saved. Driving too fast has become an issue ever since cars were put on the road but society feels it is time to put an end to this. There are many advertisements and commercials on the television and on billboards, but they don’t seem to be doing the job to stop the speeding. Ecovia, a transit company, is trying to get the message across in a different way. They are tying the message of “don’t speed” in with a very popular issue, of violence against women. Is speeding just as serious as violence against women? That is the question this image is trying to get humanity to think about. The use of text, color, shadows and contrast make this image prove that driving too fast is equally as appalling as domestic abuse. This ad portrays an image of what seems to be a man’s fist striking the jaw of a woman. Right above the man’s arm there is a text box with the words “STOP THE VIOLENCE DON’T SPEED.” The words “DON’T SPEED” are written in the color red. On the man’s hand there is a painting of a red truck. On the woman’s face there is a painting of a yellow SUV. The red truck makes the red writing really stand out. It also draws the message of don’t speed to the red truck to make it seem as if the driver of the red truck is the guilty party in the crash...

Narrative Essay About Speeding

...Throughout that year my mother taught me the importance of driving. She gave me all the extra rules and regulations. One of the most important rules was to watch my speed. Well every time she would say anything about speeding I would say,” OK mom I'm not going to get a speeding ticket” in a annoyed manner. Well one day we were coming back from my cousin birthday party at a bowling alley. My mother let me drive home because she was really tired. It was about 12 o'clock at night before we pulled off my mother said," no speeding it's late and I'm tired so you need to be careful and pay close attention". I replied OK mom it's no police out around this time of night anyway. My mother told me I don't know everything and police are always out. She...

Effectivness of Advertisment for Speeding Behaviours

...EFFECTIVNESS OF ADVERTISMENT FOR SPEEDING BEHAVIOURS A Review of the Effectiveness of Advertisement Campaign as a countermeasure for preventing Speeding Behaviours in Drivers Name: Mylinh Huynh Student number: n8910481 Unit Name: Traffic Psychology Word Count: 3488 Abstract This essay discusses about the theoretical and empirical evidence relating to the effectiveness of advertisement as a countermeasure for speeding. The results of the review highlight the mixed and inconsistent findings that have been reported in the literature. While fear arousal appears important for attracting attention, its contribution to behaviour change appears less critical than other factors, such as perceptions of vulnerability and effective coping strategies. Furthermore, physical threat appeals such as death or portraying physical harm is less effective for males then females. Consequently, further research is required to determine the optimum way to utilise advertisement as a countermeasure for speeding. A Review of the Effectiveness of Advertisement Campaign as a countermeasure for preventing Speeding Behaviours in Drivers Most traffic accidents are caused by dangerous driving habits attained and carried out by drivers. Risky driver behaviours such as speeding and drink driving represent one of the leading causes to road trauma (Boyle, 1984). One of the most prevalent factors contributing to Australia's road death accidents is speeding. According to New South Wales statistical...

Aristotle Virtue Ethicism Analysis

...by being moral and virtuous. Whilst I agree with the idea that the main focus of ethics should be placed on character rather than rules, virtue ethics has negative aspects. For instance, virtue ethics does not provide a clear insight into how to act in a particular situation like Kantian ethics, Robert Louden reinforces this by stating that virtue ethics cannot resolve moral dilemmas. Also, conflicting virtues could make it harder to make a decision, for instance, a man caught speeding says he was speeding as it is a medical emergency could make it difficult for virtue ethicists to make a decision. On one hand, a virtue theorist should show mercy and compassion, both desirable virtues, however we should also show integrity and justice, therefore outlining difficulties. Nevertheless, virtue ethics enables us to acquire good characteristics over time, enabling us to acquire the mindset to desiring to do virtuous things, rather than doing them involuntarily. Therefore, virtue ethics focuses on the importance of what is actually means to be a human being, offering a holistic view, rather than focusing on moral dilemmas. ...

A primary law is an offence that can be enforced by itself. For example, speeding would be a primary offence. Once pulled over for speeding if the officer notices that the driver or passengers do not have seatbelts on, he may also give traffic citations for that, as it is a secondary offence. Many states now hold texting and driving as a primary offence, however there are still several states that do not have a texting and driving ban at...

Domino Deloiver Case

...Note: the following case is copyrighted and may be copied and used only by current users and owners of the textbook, BUSINESS ETHICS: CONCEPTS AND CASES by Manuel Velasquez. Domino’s Delivers In May 1993 Domino’s paid $2.8 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the family of 41-year-old Susan Wauchop who was killed when her van was struck by a Domino’s delivery truck being driven on a highway in rainy weather.1 The family alleged that the 19-year-old driver was speeding to meet Domino’s guarantee to deliver a pizza within 30 minutes. Domino’s argued that weather and road conditions were the real cause of the accident and refused to change its 30-minute guarantee. Not only was the guarantee popular with its customers, it also set Domino’s apart from its numerous rivals in a highly competitive and crowded business.2 Domino’s Pizza was founded in 1960 when two brothers, Tom and Jim Monaghan purchased a pizza store in Ypsilanti, Michigan. A year later Jim traded his half of the business to his brother for a Volkswagen Beetle and Tom Monaghan became sole owner. By 1983, the company had expanded to 1000 restaurants. Ten years later the company was well on its way to owning over 4000 outlets within the United States, and over 500 outside the United States. In addition, over 1000 Domino’s Pizza restaurants were owned by others as franchise operations. Domino’s had become the fastest growing pizza company in the world. Analysts felt that the key to Domino’s rapid expansion was a promotion...

Correlation vs Causation

...with the assessment of research based on statistical analysis involves the determination of whether a true cause and effect connection between variables exists, or is it just a statistical relationship known as correlation. While there may be correlation between variables, there is not a causal relationship unless the variation in the independent variable or variables actually causes the variation in the dependent variable. Often correlation is misinterpreted as causation, as is the case in the examples presented in this essay. The first example is from a journal article that says watching TV increases a persons risk of heart disease and non-cancer related deaths. The second two examples are related to transportation, one saying that speeding causes car crashes and the other saying population in a traffic analysis zone (TAZ) causes trips produced. Although correlation is necessary it is not sufficient, it is important that a true causal relation exists before making conclusions. Body (Example A) The first study is presented in the journal, Circulation-Journal of the American Heart Association with the title, Television Viewing time and Mortality: The Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study (AusDiab). The baseline data for the study was gathered between the years of 1999 and 2000. The locations for data collection were chosen based on Census Collector Districts in each of the Australian states and in the Northern Territory of Australia. In all 28,033 houses...

Traffic in the City of Kelsey

...Traffic in the City of Kelsey Vernon Colbourne ACC 574 George Holbrook June 22, 2015 The City of Kelsey’s mayor has identified a need to increase funding for the city highways. The reason for this request is the traffic issues the city has seen in the past couple of years. Those traffic issues are road congestion and traffic accidents. This change ultimately affects the City of Kelsey current budget fiscal cycle. The mayor deemed it appropriate to get the city’s budget director involved. The focus of the fiscal budget should be on how additional funds can be added to the fiscal year budget. The most likely revenue source for additional funding will come from the increase in gas taxes. The budget director will have to focus their attention on how well the citizens will respond to the tax increase. The budget director needs to set goals for the budget. Once the goals are set, the city’s budget director meets with the City of Kelsey officials to discuss current and future city policies (Apollo Group, Inc, 2011). Gas Tax Increase The city’s gas tax is at a current rate of 5 cents per gallon (Apollo Group, Inc, 2011). If the proposed budget is approved, the current gas tax will increase to a staggering 20 cents. The budget director understands this will be a hard one for citizens to swallow. Therefore, other areas of the budget may be compromised as well. One option is requesting a lower tax increase because the...
