When Popo was dying, An-mei’s mother cut off a piece of her arm’s meat and put it into a soup she was brewing. She then fed this to Popo in an effort to save her. Though it could not save Popo, An-mei saw that this was how a daughter should honor a mother, and that the pain should mean nothing against a mother’s life. She understood the worth of this pain. An-mei says that this is how she came to love her mother. I believe this event made An-mei realize that, even when Popo believed her daughter was a disgrace, An-mei’s mother had honored Popo, and cut her flesh for her. It made her see that nothing should come between the respect a daughter has for her mother. An-mei, too, could forget what was on the surface and

...Ch r i s t i n e Ro e ll Intercultural Training with Films ilms are a great medium to use not only to practice English, but also to facilitate intercultural learning. Today English is a global language spoken by people from many countries and cultural backgrounds. Since culture greatly impacts communication, it is helpful for teachers to introduce lessons and activities that reveal how different dialects, forms of address, customs, taboos, and other cultural elements influence interaction among different groups. Numerous films contain excellent examples of intercultural communication and are highly useful resources for teachers. Additional reasons for teachers to incorporate films in class and encourage their students to watch movies in English include: • Films combine pleasure and learning by telling a story in a way that captures and holds the viewer’s interest. • Films simultaneously address different senses and cognitive channels. For example, spoken language is supported by visual elements that make it easier for students to understand the dialogues and the plot. • Students are exposed to the way people actually speak. 2 2010 N u m b e r F • Films involve the viewers, appeal to their feelings, and help them empathize with the protagonists. • DVDs usually come with subtitles in English, which facilitates understanding and improves reading skills. PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...

...THE B L A C K SWAN The HIGHLY I mpact IM of the PROBABLE Nassim Nicholas Taleb U.S.A. $26.95 Canada $34.95 is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpre dictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9 / 1 1 . For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives. A BLACK SWAN Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. We concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don't know. We are, therefore, unable to truly estimate oppor tunities, too vulnerable to the impulse to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and not open enough to rewarding those who can imagine the "impossible." For years, Taleb has studied how we fool our selves into thinking we know more than we actually do. We restrict our thinking to the irrelevant and inconsequential, while large events continue to surprise us and shape our world. Now, in this reve latory book, Taleb explains everything we know about what we don't know. He offers...

...Name: Mashell Chapeyama Institution: University of the People Short essays on Organizational Behavior This is a compilation of essays on Organizational behavior. The essays vary in their length and scope but they are all essential. Those essays entitled Reflections are based on the writer’s evaluations of material learned during the particular period. The essays were written as assignments to meet the requirements of the course: Organizational Behavior, at the University of the People. The University of the People is a new initiative on the global scene. It is the first tuition free University in the world, yet it has high quality education. It has various levels of assignments. Some of the questions require shorter answers, whereas the others require longer ones. Organizational Behavior is one of the courses at University of the People, in the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. The inadequacies in the answers must be attributed to the writer and not to the institution. This publication has nothing to do with the requirements of the university. It is my personal interest to preserve my assignments and that these may assist other learners. Any comments must be sent to the writer at the email: mchapeyama@gmail.com Diversity Program Most modern organizations have knowledge on how to tap on diversity to get a competitive business advantage. Managing of diversity is now put alongside issues such as corporate social responsibility and ethics as an appeal...

Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught but also for helping teammates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement. WHY USE IT? Documented results include improved academic achievement, improved behavior and attendance, increased self-confidence and motivation, and increased liking of school and classmates. Cooperative learning is also relatively easy to implement and is inexpensive. HOW DOES IT WORK? Here are some typical strategies that can be used with any subject, in almost any grade, and without a special curriculum: Group Investigations are structured to emphasize higher-order thinking skills such as analysis and evaluation. Students work to produce a group project, which they may have a hand in selecting. STAD (Student Teams-Achievement Divisions) is used in grades 2-12. Students with varying academic abilities are assigned to 4- or 5-member teams in order to study what has been initially taught by the teacher and to help each reach his or her highest level of achievement. Students are then tested individually. Teams earn certificates or other recognition based on the degree...
