...The book I'm writing this book report on is "The Last Rite" by Lisa Desrochers, published by Tom Doherty Associates, LLC, and is the last book in the "Personal Demons" Series. It is a fiction book that includes some of the main characters from "Original Sin": Luc, Frannie, and Gabe. Also this book report will probably be only five paragraphs as I'm trying to remember everything that happened, because the book was due back to the library. This book begins with all of the main characters in a car, on their way to an unidentified place. But before I continue, I should tell want happened at the end of the previous book. To sum it up, Lili tried to attack Frannie but Luc told her to go and came back injured. It never said what had happened to him or Lili, so that's a thing. Then Gabe came along and got them into a car and took off....

...Evaluation Rough Draft 2 August 2012 Last Rites for Indian Dead”, Evaluation Susan Harjo in her essay titled, “Last Rites for Indian Dead”, argues that it is wrong to remove the remains of Native Americans for medicinal, archeological, or fortune hunting purposes. Native American peoples should no longer be considered the property of all Americans. She decries the desecration, plunder, and exploitation of Native American grave-sites and holy sites. Her quest is to see national legislation passed to protect the burial remains of Native Americans. Her argument remains viable and quite compelling. Every human kind deserves reverential treatment. Despite the fact I am not a Native American, I can sympathize with the feelings of dishonor, desecration, and decadency someone must feel upon learning that their relatives have been exhumed without family awareness nor blessing. I would dread and hate the thought of having my own family grave tampered with whether for research or medical purposes. The only time I could compromise this thought is if authorities are requiring evidence to solve a crime. Grave sites and cemeteries ought to be preserved as places of peace and tranquility in honor of the deceased. How horrible it would be to visit my parent’s graveside only to discover they had been dug up? It is not right for anyone to look for wealth by tampering with the remains of the dead. Harjo calls research on her peoples’ relics into question by citing a well-known doctor...

...lysis Topic Proposal by Mr. K.Harjo, Susan Shown. "Last Rites for Indian Dead." in Kennedy, X.J., et.al., eds. The Bedford Guide for College Writers. Boston: Bedford., 2002.Harjo's piece was originally published prior to the creation of Congress' N.A.G.P.R.A. legislation (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act), signed into law under the first Bush Administration in 1991. Harjo's central argument is that Native American peoples should no longer be considered the commodified property of all Americans. She decries the desecration and exploitation of Native American gravesites and holy sites. For far too long, Harjo argues, Native American people have been seen as nothing more than a people ripe for exploitation and plunder, especially since relics and bones can fetch hefty prices at museums or amongst collectors of such rare items. Harjo's intended audience is a lay one; she assumes that most people have been very uninformed and passive about her topic; as such, she makes concerted efforts to inform and persuade her audience that the desecration and exploitation of her people must stop.Ultimately, while Harjo's essay does a very good job of establishing an ethical and emotional warrant so as to support her initial claim, I contend that she fails to completely convince me as to why studying Indian relics and skulls on the part of scientists is a useless endeavor. She raises up a point about the futility of such ethnographic / scientific studies on the bones, but does...

...I'm going to compare and contrast "The Medicine Bag" to the "Apache Girls Rite of Passage." I'm going talk about similarities and differences. The between the book and video was tradition. The are both Native American. Because Martian grandpa came from their tribe and then Dachina is the White Mountain. The rite of passage is one of the last similarities of the Medicine Bag and The Apache Girl's Rite of Passage. The rite passage is where they went to an infant to adult. The difference in the Medicine Bag. The Medicine Bag was in 1st person narration. How I could tell it was in 1st person because Martian was telling the story and no one else. Martian family only does it instead of the whole tribe. This story was emotion rite/conflict...

...Apache Girl, presented two different rites of passages. Even though they are two different rituals, they have some similarities. In “The Medicine Bag”, Grandpa traveled a long way to see Martin just to pass on the medicine bag tradition before he dies. During the Lakota rite of passage, the oldest male in the family will receive the medicine bag. In The Apache Girl, Dachina went through a long ritual to become a strong woman, and get her woman name, which was Morning Star Feather. During the Lakota rite of passage, the oldest male in the family will receive the medicine bag. First, the person who currently has he medicine bag will travel to the person they are passing it to. After arriving, he must give the bag to the oldest male child in he family. Lastly, the child must remove two things from the bag and replace them. After the bag is the child’s, he must never open it until its time to pass it on again. During the Apache rite of passage, thirteen-year-old girls will participate in the ritual that will transform them into strong women. Their family members will create medicine for them, and make sure they get enough sleep and enough to eat before the ritual. The ritual begins with the rising of the morning star. Before joining the girls, Dachina...

...Final Rites of Passage Sharon Teets ANT101 Instructor Bojakowski March 15, 2015 The different phases of human development and the events to mark those phases are referred to as rites of passage. There are many rites of passage during a human life leading up to the final rite of passage, which is death. Funeral and death rites are used to mark the passing of a loved one and to help the living cope with and understand the departure of that loved one. These rituals are very different from one culture and society to the next. In the United States, funerals and death rites are usually one day affairs with no further rites practiced. In Japan, funeral rites are much more ritualized and not only deal with death, they also deal with life after death. The lack of funeral and death rites in contemporary Western society can lead to disenfranchised grief as they may be insufficient in helping people cope with the loss of a loved one. Japanese culture marks aging with milestone birthdays that are celebrated to map the progression of aging to the final destination of death. In this paper I will be examining funeral and death rites and if they adequately help with the grieving process and the acceptance of death. I will be examining the funeral and death rites in the United States from an etic perspective and contrasting this examination with an emic perspective of the same rituals as they are practiced in Japan, to show that my cultures rituals are lacking in the tools to deal...

...Rites of Passage: The Making of an Adult Coleen Adams ANT 101 Professor Cohen October 14, 2013 Throughout the world, every culture has introduced their own versions of the “Rites of Passage”. The coming of age when you pass from being a child into adulthood. Some rites are as simple as a dance or the painting of faces, while others are as extreme as forceful circumcision and sleeping with other men’s wives. Regardless of the circumstances, it’s never easy becoming a grown-up. As a part of the Western Culture, we seldom observe, have knowledge of or understand the uniqueness of participating in a Rite of Passage. We are exposed to the “American” versions of the Bar Mitzvah, Quinceanera’s and the Vision Quest of the American Indian, while not acknowledging our own that we take for granted daily. Whether its following in our parents or siblings footsteps, getting a driver’s license or receiving a family heirloom passed down from generation to generation. Some people believe that you don’t become an adult until your parents pass away. In actuality, all are forms of a Rite of Passage. While researching this particular topic in the Ashford Library, there were wonderful examples of what the Rites of Passage has endured throughout the centuries. Coupling this with information from the local library, one can cross reference articles, journals, books and government databases (which regretfully are not functioning because of the government shutdown) in depth. By cross...

...Vietnamese beliefs and rituals of the death is one of the most interesting topics. Death is a part of life that everyone has to accept. We all have to die. “Death and grief are normal life events, all culture have developed ways to cope with death in a respectful manner” (Carteret). Vietnam is a small country, but it has numerous traditions concerning death rites. Different parts of Vietnam have separated death beliefs and rituals. Vietnamese honor and respect their ancestors and the deceased people so they strictly pay attention to funerals and worships. To them, funeral is a big ritual in a life cycle. Every region and religion has its own definition and how the funeral should be. Funeral usually includes many processes which is made and dedicated from those who are living to the person who has died. In Vietnam, when a person is about to die and his/her family may predict, the first judgment is asking whether that person wants to weary anything; these last few words are called the will. After that, the family washes and cleans his/her body and put some nice clothes on him/her. Sometimes, when an old person is in his/her last few years of life, like my grandmother, she tells her eldest son to find a tailor and make her a white silk set of clothes, so she can wear it in her funeral. It is considered a will from the person, and everybody should respect that. Back in the old day,...
