Although Octavie an Edmond did not want to be separated they were. Edmond was sent to serve at the Civil war. Octavie gave Edmond a locket that meant a lot to her, it had belonged to her parents. When the locket was returned to Octavie I really thought Edmond was dead specially when in the story it says about her wearing a black dress and” beneath the folds of her bodice nestled the old locket it had returned to her sanctified in her eyes; made precious as material things sometimes are being forever identified with a significant moment of one’s existence”.

I truly believed Edmond was dead until the Priest ask “ Do you think that on a day like this, miracles might happen? When the whole earth is vibrant with life, does it not seems to you Octavie, that heaven might for once relent and give us back the dead?” It was at that moment I felt Edmond was alive. …show more content…

...“The Locket,” is a short story about a young couple that is separated during the Civil War. It also depicts the journey of Octavia’s precise locket after she gave it to Edmond prior to leaving for the conflict. It was not a surprise to find out that Edmond was still alive, but that the locket found its way back to Octavie. There were many clues and ideas that built up as I read the story. The locket held the attention of a fellow soldier while Edmond was buttoning his shirt and reading a letter from home. While lounging on the hillside the soldier kept asking Edmund what the gold thing was around his neck. Then Edmond replied it was a good luck charm and “he wouldn’t have survived the year and a half without it.” It was obvious that it was important to Edmond and the other soldier wanted it for himself....
