...will always reveal itself in the darkness and that’s exactly what happened when one of the prisoners was released and pushed out into the world. He came back and told his friends what reality was like; he found his friends to be disenchanted by their own notions and could not make sense of it all. Descartes wrote that all that he knew from childhood was all falsehood conviction and no real honesty no substantial entity to grasp onto. He was lost until the light that indicates candor had shown him the way; Descartes found out that his own senses misled him to dishonesty so in concordance he only believes what he sees. Neo however has many misconceptions being trapped in his own mirage cave like matrix of a world; trying to make sense of what is real and what is not. In the matrix no one ever experienced pain or any other physical ailments because how can you run off of a building and not die? How can you get shot at a million times in one scene and not die? For Neo, the predominate factor was that he had accepted the false sense of the matrix’s flawed computer generated ignorance along with the false sense of reality and security. All of that is an illusion of the mirage for Neo. What Neo, Descartes, and Plato had in common was searching for truth, searching for something that they can call their own. Most of us live in ignorance is bliss state of mind because we are afraid of what the reality of the world has to offer....

...Portfolio Task 1: English Essay The Matrix and Chapter 28 of the Restaurant at the End of the Universe are two examples of conflicting texts that demonstrate opposing ways of viewing the world around us. The Matrix follows the views of an empiricist, set in a mental prison where people rely on their senses to an extent where they are completely oblivious to what is real. Chapter 28 of the Restaurant at the End of the Universe however focuses on a rationalist view through the character the Ruler of the Universe emphasising his day-to-day lifestyle and how he responds to what he conceives to be real. Although these texts present conflicting views upon the world, they are similar in the way they represent their ideas, and it is through these similarities that rationalism and empiricism maintain a conflicting existence. In the Matrix the director intentionally depicts Neo as being the embodiment of empiricism. The directors use of imagery through sombre lighting and choice of plain character costumes, lacking in brightness, colour and their ability to stand out portrays the world Neo is living in and by extension how he views it. This is also present in Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ at the beginning of chapter one where Alice feels bored and drowsy whilst sitting at the river-bank with her elder sister. In one scene Morpheus directly references Carroll by offering Neo the chance to discover what is real. “… You take the blue pill the story ends, you wake...

...According to David (2011) “the competitive profile matrix (CPM) identifies a firm’s major competitors and its particular strengths and weaknesses in relation to a sample firm’s strategic position” (p. 81). The CPM I completed above of McDonald’s and its competitors, Burger King Holdings and Yum! Brands, Inc., shows McDonald’s in a stronger strategic position than its competitors. In May of 2009, looking at financials, McDonald’s had a strong lead over its immediate competitors in the food service industry by having a market cap of $59.8 billion. In comparison, Yum! Brands had a market cap of $16.3 billion and Burger King Holdings had a market cap of $2.46 billion. Some of the reasons McDonald’s is successful and has high market share is due to its strong brand name recognition, a strong customer loyalty base, and its global expansion. Additionally, McDonald’s budgets quite a bit of money for advertising and has a fairly robust management program. McDonald’s is also well known for its Ronald McDonald charities. Burger King Corporation is ranked as the second largest burger chain in the world but ranks third in the food service industry. Yum! Brands, Inc. is the most similar in size to McDonald’s. It is ranked as the second largest company in the fast food service industry in the world. As good as McDonald’s looks in the competitive profile matrix, there are areas in which McDonald’s can improve. One of those areas is their public image. Some of the issues that have caused McDonald’s...

...Comparing and Contrasting Auto and Health Insurance FP/101 Version 5 Comparing and Contrasting Auto and Health Insurance If you own a vehicle, you are required by law to purchase at least minimum liability insurance coverage and most states compulsory automobile insurance laws, which you must have to register your car. And all states have financial responsibility laws that require drivers who have been involved in traffic accidents have proof of insurance or the means to pay a claim. In some states even if you only possess a license but you do not actually own or drive a car, you still must have auto insurance. Automobile insurance protects you and your vehicle as well as other individuals on the road from accidents caused by texting, eating, and other numerous distractions involved while driving. It covers property and bodily injuries caused in a car wreck. Health Insurance offers protection against illness or emergencies and usually covers most routine medical exams; it can be purchased through your employer or individually. You must pay not only insurance premiums, but usually a co pay is required when visiting the doctor or purchasing your prescription medicines. These can range between twenty five or more dollars for the office visit and just a few dollars for the medicine, depending on your plan. Also a yearly deductible sometimes must be met before coverage takes full effect. Some health insurance is provided by the government, such as Medicaid for the low...

My group, management, had the second highest rating at a 2.78 and I felt that we were fairly critical of the different strengths and weaknesses for the company. The groups that pertained to a more financial aspect like finance and accounting seemed to have lower scores, which were not as far above the average for utilization of resources internally. This seems interesting because many companies use resources outside their company to assist them in correcting financial problems. Also, there were a few strengths and weaknesses that every group mentioned in their matrix and they were: Steve Jobs leaving and then returning(W), large increase in inventory(W), products are globalized(S). It was interesting to see that Steve Jobs leaving and then returning was on everyone groups list because with out him these last few years Apple Inc. would probably not be where it is at today. The only downside to this is that there seems to be this great dependency on one person in...

...Procrastination – An essay on If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler written by Italo Calvino Perhaps this sentence would suit as the closing one. Well at least I have to consider it. Finally, ideas are starting to evolve now that I have sat myself down with my cup of coffee; Calvino thought drinking coffee was adequate for reading and writing, so I drink it while I do just that, read or write. The amount of procrastination this essay has received is not even measurable through the metric system; such large amounts are we talking about, well that is how my mind put it. I think the deadline was the 21st of December and today it’s the 14th of March, the accurate word for this instance would be insane. An understanding for how evil my procrastinating self can become has been stated. Let’s google procrastination, did you get the same hit as I did? “Procrastination refers to the act of replacing high-priority actions with tasks of lower priority” I could not possibly agree more. “To beat procrastination you have to win the performing-race against your procrastinating self”, well let’s start beating this procrastinating dude then, to begin with, what should I write about? Maybe I can use this procrastination situation in my essay, after all the first six pages in If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino are all about procrastination. Or should I write about how the novel is structured with every second chapter being a separate story and how that is entwined with the duality...

...ESSAY Matrix Plato Descartes Essay James Brothers Phil 201 ESSAY In this essay I will look at the similarities and differences between the movie, The Matrix, an excerpt from Plato and an excerpt from Descartes. It will be seen that there are many similarities surrounding the prisoner in the Plato excerpt and the Character of Neo in The Matrix. A bit less similarities follows with the excerpt of Descartes however there are some. Let us begin. The prisoner relates to Neo from matrix as the prisoner and Neo both have only one reality about life. The prisoner and Neo have perceived one reality there whole life and don’t know any different and why would they. They similarly are both taken out of current perceived reality and thrown in to a completely different one. This changes everything for them. As Neo is given a choice of a red or blue pill, the red pill will take him out of his current state and the blue keep him in it. When he is confronted for an opportunity for a completely different reality, to find out the truth you could say. One might say who wouldn’t choose that. If someone says I can show you that your reality if not real and show you the truth who would not want to know. The Prisoner’s reality is as Socrates states, “Then in every way such prisoners would deem reality to be nothing else than the shadows of the artificial objects.” 1 Relating this to neo he lives in a world like ours but he feels or something...

...Huntsville Project Organizational Structure Essay James M. Reska Keller-PM 586 – Project Management August 19, 2012 Huntsville Project Organizational Structure Essay The success of an organization relies primarily on its organizational structure. There are three basic organizational structures; of course, there exists organizational structures that combine pieces of these three. It is my belief that no two organizations are perfectly identical. Each one requires fine tuning specifically tailored to the needs of that company. The matrix structure is used primarily for “project driven” companies, especially construction companies it combines both functional and pure project structures, each team member has two bosses; the project manager and the functional manager. The SEITZ Corporation has chosen to invest in the construction of a new plant in the next fiscal year believing that this investment is the best way to achieve the strategic goals outlined in their Project Charter. Therefore, the most feasible way for them to achieve success in this endeavor is to establish their construction/investment project as a matrix organization. Within a matrix organization there are certain ground rules that must be adhered to; participants must spend full time on projects, there must exist vertical and horizontal channels in place for making...

...PHI 105 Types of Communication Matrix When communicating your critical thinking about a concept, you choose how to present it to your audience. To explore this further, we will look at three ways to communicate: informative, explanatory, and persuasive statements. A quality persuasive essay includes a mixture of informative, explanatory, and persuasive statements because to persuade someone you must: Inform people about the topic Explain your argument, and Convince your audience of your point of view. Complete the following matrix by: Choosing a concept (different from the topic of your persuasive essay) and writing it first as an informative statement, second as an explanatory statement, and third as a persuasive statement. An example has been provided for you in the Matrix. Provide examples from your persuasive essay of one informative statement, one explanatory statement, and one persuasive statement (all areas in green should be complete before submitting). Concept Informative Explanatory Persuasive Baseball (Example) Baseball is a sport. In baseball, infielders should creep toward the batter during the pitch because it is easier to react when in motion. Quality pitchers are more important than power hitters, because keeping runs off the board could give the pitcher’s team more opportunity win. ...Personality Theories Matrix THEORY Psychoanalytic Neo-Freudian Trait Biological Humanistic Behavioral/ Social Cognitive Personality “Self: id, ego, superego, thanatos; defense mechanisms.” Personlaity structureis made up of 3 major systems: the id, the ego and the superego. Each has its own function properties, components, operating principles, and mechanisms, the systems interact so closely with one another that it is difficult to disentangle their effects and state their relative contribution to man’s behavior. Id is the part of the personality system with which a person is born, it is inherited and that is present at birth. It is comprised of urges and desires plus the effects and fixations of early childhood experiences. All memories are kept here. All of the power for the operation of the other two systems and is in close touch with the bodily processes from which it derives its energy. It represents the inner world of subjective experience and has no knowledge of objective reality. Operates on the unconscious level of the human mind. Avoiding pain and obtaining pleasure, the Id has its command two processes the reflex action and the primary process. This form of memory image is called wish fulfillment and is the only reality that the Id knows. “I want.” Ego come into existence because the individual needs some type of conscious...

...Essay 3) Use an extended example to discuss how ‘the sector matrix’ framework is useful for analysing demand and supply linkages in an industry. The end of the 20th century has experienced rapid changes in the way of trading, due to the expansion of capitalism. The Oxford dictionary defines capitalism as “an economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state”. Due to high competition, firms have desperately been trying to reduce costs of production in order to maximise profits. Published in “Competitive Advantage” in 1985, Porter’s value chain is a great example to show how much importance firms gave to the supply side of the market in this period. Porter described the value chain as “a set of products and services linked together in a sequence of value adding economic activities”. In other words, it analyses the stages in which a product is created from raw material until it’s finished, each stage adding value to the product. Gereffi’s ‘Global Commodity chains’ uses the old strategy chains and links them with their political and geographical context, adding a spatial and territorial dimension to the demand and supply in a market.________________________________________ In 1998 in their article “Breaking the Chains? A sector Matrix for Motoring”, Julie Froud, Colin Haslam, Sukhdev Johal and Karel Williams tackled the settled chain concepts by showing its limits regarding complex industries...

It is in the measurement of such outcomes, corresponding to the evaluation and synthesis levels of the Bloom’s (1956) taxonomy that the essay questions serve their most useful purpose. One of the difficulties of grading essays is represented by the perceived subjectivity of the grading process. Many researchers claim that the subjective nature of essay assessment leads to variation in grades awarded by different human assessors, which is perceived by students as a great source of unfairness. This issue may be faced through the adoption of automated assessment tools for essays. A system for automated assessment would at least be consistent in the way it scores essays, and enormous cost and time savings could be achieved if the system can be shown to grade essays within the range of those awarded by human assessors. This paper presents an overview of current approaches to...
