The Moon is down, a novel sponsored by the OSS and written by John Steinbeck, and for which he received a medal of honor, was published by Viking Press in March 1942. The story details a military occupation of a small town in Northern Europe by the army of an unnamed nation at war with England and Russia (much like the occupation of Norway by the Germans during World War II).
Taken by surprise, a small coastal town is overrun by the invading army with little resistance. The town is important because it has a large coal mine. Colonel Lanser, the head of the invading battalion, along with his staff establishes his HQ in the house of Mayor Orden, the democratically elected and much-liked mayor of the town. As the reality of occupation sinks in and the weather turns bleak, with the snows beginning earlier than usual, the "simple, peaceful people" of the town are angry and confused. Colonel Lanser, a veteran of many wars, tries to operate under a veil of civility and law, but in his heart he knows that "there are no peaceful people" amongst those whose freedom has been taken away by force. The veil is soon torn apart when Alexander Morden, an erstwhile alderman and "a free man," is ordered to work in the mine. He strikes out at Captain Loft with a pick axe, but Captain Bentick steps into its path and dies of it. After a summary trial, Morden is executed by a firing squad. This incident catalyzes the people of the town and they settle into "a slow, silent, waiting revenge." Sections of the railroad get damaged regularly, the machinery breaks down often, and the dynamo of the electricity generators gets short circuited. Whenever a soldier relaxes his guard, drinks or goes out with a woman, he gets killed. Mayor Orden stands by his people, and tries to explain to Col. Lanser that his goal - "to break man’s spirit permanently" - is impossible. The cold weather and the constant fear weighs heavy on the occupying force, many of whom wish the war to end so that they can return home. They realize the futility of the war and that "the flies have conquered the flypaper." The resistance asks England for explosives so that they can intensify their efforts. The allied planes drop small parachutes with dynamite sticks & chocolates all around the town. In a state of panic, the army takes the Mayor and his friend Dr. Winter, the town doctor and historian, hostage and lets it be known that any action from resistance will lead to their execution. Mayor Orden knows that nothing can stop his people and that his death is imminent. He tells his wife that while he can be killed, the idea of Mayor (and freedom and democracy) is beyond the reach of any army. Before his execution, Mayor Orden reminds Dr. Winter of the dialogues of Socrates in the Apology, a part he played in the high school play, and tells him to make sure that the debt is repaid to the army so that the resistance is continued.
Personally I didn’t like the book, but I think it is generally liked, so if you are the fan of world of war I really suggest you take a look at it.

The Moon Is Down Theme

...The main characters of Steinbeck’s Cannery Row and The Moon is Down experience diverse ordeals but display that “down and out” people may still possess admirable qualities. In the novel Cannery Row, Mack and the boys, a group of creative unemployed men in Montery try to reward Doc for his contributions to the community. This considerate idea backfires even though the main objective intended to be thankfulness. The invaders in The Moon is Down were also placed under a false impression, while the citizen’s hard work helped withdraw the Nazis. The collaboration of the town similarly expresses how Mack and the boys worked eventually to attain their goal. The characters’ forthrightness, use of cooperation, and false impressions reveals their commendable sensibility at heart. A forthright approach allowed the townspeople to obtain resistance against the Nazis, and for Mack and the boys to have a willingness to do something nice for Doc. The townspeople felt greatly afflicted while being conquered by the Nazis, leaving the choice of fleeing or rebeling. Much of the town had decided to rebel following “role models” such as Alex Morden who killed an officer, believing he should finish a task no matter the consequence. Mack and the boys realize that Doc, the town’s popular scientist, has done much to help the community. This neighborly attitude promotes Mack and the boys to throw a party for Doc. For both of the goals to succeed, the characters must work together. ...

Resistance In John Steinbeck's The Moon Is Down

...The strongest of steel is forged in the hottest of fires. This is a famous quote which teaches that the harder the challenge, the stronger one can become. In The Moon is Down, written by John Steinbeck, the situation is horrible. People are being killed every day and hope is the only thing worth living for. Hope, is being brought by resistance. Peaceful town citizens have turned into killers in order to save their town and avenge their loved one's deaths. In the town, resistance is primarily done in two ways. Through sabotage, or through passing information . People began to blow up vital equipment belonging to the invaders, and started passing information around that the invaders wanted to keep contained. Therefore, through these forms of resistance,...

Resistance In John Steinbeck's The Moon Is Down

...Woodrow Wilson, a former president of the United States, once pronounced, “The history of liberty is a history of resistance”. Resistance can have a positive outcome if executed correctly. In John Steinbeck’s novel The Moon is Down, he communicates that although resistance is acceptable when a group of individuals is being treated unfairly, resistance must be conducted in a way that does not bring the situation to a more extreme level of violence in order to result in an effective change. When an individual or a group resists by disobeying a hierarchy, because their morals are not being respected, the result is an unimpactful one. Annie, the Mayor’s cook, “doesn’t like the soldiers on the back porch” (Steinbeck 17), so she is disobedient and vicious towards the people who have wrongfully invaded her hometown. The only result of Annie’s rage towards the raiders was “[One invader] scalded, and one man bitten” (18). Annie receives a...

...Nicholas Law Humanities Paper Moon: The Connected Meaning In The Song “It’s only A Paper Moon” there are a few quotes and connections to the character’s lives from the movie “Paper Moon”. The lyrics in the song help depict how the Protagonist Addie changes the life of Moses Pray and how inseparable they become after a short period of time. In the following essay I will also explain what the “Paper moon” symbolizes to the characters metaphorically and realistically. In the movie “Paper Moon” a young girl by the name of Addie is left all alone in a world unknown to her. She is forced into the care of a man name Moses Pray also known as a “con man” and he is guilt tripped into transporting Addie to her aunt halfway across the country. Throughout this long trip Moses and Addie become very fond of one another, and at times even act as a married couple would, bickering and fighting over small trivial things such as money and cigarettes. Although over this trip Addie and Moses Con many people to raise their funds for the expense of the trip and many other things. Through all of the conning they did the quote “But it wouldn’t be make believe if you believed in me” really stands out in a literal and metaphoric sense. In the literal look on the situation the people they con don’t believe it is “make believe” due to the process they use when they con, an example would be taking advantage of the loss of a loved one to sell bibles. The family of the deceased then takes the bait and...

Physics and Space Travel

...as The Brick Moon by Edward Everett Hale illustrate how little was actually known about outer space, and the physical and practical limitations humans must overcome to escape Earth’s gravity. The Brick Moon is a science fiction short story written in the 1800s and it is one of the first known writings to describe the construction and launch of not only an artificial satellite, but also a space station (Wikipedia, 2011). The story The Brick Moon outlines some of the building blocks for modern day space technology and travel but the approach used in the book is impractical for real world application. The Brick Moon is written from the perspective of one of the main characters and recounts how he and his friends planned, funded, constructed, and eventually launched a satellite or manmade “moon” into space. The purpose of the Brick Moon was to act as a navigational aid for ships at sea. The idea was based around the North Star, which sailors used as a guide to determine their latitudinal location; the inventors wanted to launch the Brick Moon to orbit along the Prime Meridian so that sailors could just as easily gauge their longitudinal location (Hale, 1869). The characters even go so far as to consider the possibility of launching multiple moons to form a ring like Saturn’s around the Earth, but rather than running horizontally it would run vertically. Multiple moons would ensure that at any given time and at any given place on Earth at least one of the moons would be visible...

Moon Landing Research Paper

...Introduction There are many significant factors which lead to the moon landing. These are some of the important dates and the missions in the space history; first successful orbital launch was of the Soviet unmanned Sputnik 1; mission on 4 October 1957. The satellite is believed to have orbited Earth at a height of about 160 miles; Yuri Gagarin was the first human to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961. On July 22nd 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon and Buzz Aldrin the second. Dr Wernher von Braun Dr Wernher von Braun was a German rocket engineer and designer and an aerospace. He was the designer of the famous but destructive V2 rockets. The Soviet Army was about 200 miles from his office in 1945 when von Braun assembled his planning staff and asked them to decide how and to who should surrender. Afraid of the well-known Soviet cruelty to prisoners of war, von Braun and his keen staff decided to try to surrender to the Americans. Kammler (a high ranked officer) had ordered relocation of von Braun's team to central Germany; however, a conflicting order from an army chief ordered them to join the army and...

Research Paper

...HIGH JUMP When holding the Olympics on the moon, there are a number of different factors that must be considered. The major one is the fact that the gravity on the moon is one sixth that on Earth. Therefore in the high jump event the results on the moon will be better than the results on Earth. The reasoning behind this is because the acceleration down due to gravity will be less on the moon. On the moon the acceleration is 1.6 m/s2 and the acceleration on the Earth is 9.8 m/s2. A smaller acceleration in the opposing direction of which the jumper is trying to maximize her jump will be beneficial to her results. This is due to the decrease in the pull downwards on the moon compared to the pull downwards on Earth. Since we know the displacement (how high she jumped) on Earth is 2.06 meters, the initial velocity on both the Earth and the moon is 0 m/s2, and the acceleration on Earth is 9.8 m/s2 and on the moon its 1.6 m/s2,, we can determine the velocity on Earth. This value for the velocity will be the same on both the Earth and the moon therefore we have enough information to determine the displacement on the moon. The Olympic record for the women’s high jump on the Earth is 2.06 meters and the Olympic record for the women’s high jump on the moon would be 12.6175 meters. WEIGHTLIFTING When the Olympics are held on the moon and the weightlifting event takes place, the results on the moon will be better than the results on the Earth. This is due to the fact that even though...

Argumentative Essay On Space Race

...July 20,1969 America won The Space Race as we were the first human or as we know of living beings on the Moon. Although we have proof of Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were, in fact on the moon, there are some people who choose to believe and deny that this ever occurred. Their reasons mostly include that the flag was waving in the non-existing breeze. Also, there are no stars in the pictures. Lastly, they believe that the moon landing itself was recorded either deep in Hollywood 0r in Area 51. In the pictures, you see of the lunar module you see there are no stars in the sky. You would assume that in space, of all places there would be tons and tons of stars. Well, Michael Rundle wrote on HuffPost, “The lunar modules skin is by far the brightest thing in the pictures which means the crew had to have a low aperture setting on their cameras. Aperture is the setting on how much light is coming in the camera, the stars are not bright enough to be captured by the camera lens. This statement proves that there shouldn’t be pictures of stars on the moon unless that is the only thing in the picture. A statement like this proves that deniers are incorrect in their assumptions....

The Moon Landing

...The Moon Landing On the day of July 20, 1969 the United States of America accomplished a colossal feat that astonished the world. After years of trial and error the United States of America was able to beat all odds and all other countries in putting a man on the Earth’s moon, two men to be exact. Neil Alden Armstrong, the first man to lay his feet on the moon’s surface and Edwin Eugene “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. who shortly followed became symbols of America’s self-proclaimed superiority. The controversy of this topic lies in many questions. What events took place that led up to the moon landing? Who was involved? How and why did we put a man on the moon and be the first? History itself can give us these answers but there is also one question that seems to still have people talking to this day and that is, did it really even happen or could it possibly be the United States of America’s greatest hoax? The Cold War began approximately in 1945 at the end of World War II. The United States, Great Britain and some other allied counties decided they wanted to contain communism in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R) and China. Although the United States of America and these communist enemies did not get in any physical battles during this war there was definitely a lot of unspoken threats and the flexing of muscles between the two super powers, the United States of America and the Soviet Union. One of the two biggest contests or “races” between the two countries began when...

On the Moon - Acct 3340

..."Sex on the Moon: The Amazing Story Behind the Most Audacious Heist in History" by Ben Mezrich tells the true story of a young man named Thad Roberts who masterminded the first crime ever to take place in NASA. Thad Roberts, a fellow in a prestigious NASA program had an idea—a romantic, albeit crazy, idea. He wanted to give his girlfriend the moon. Literally Thad convinced his girlfriend and another female accomplice, both NASA interns, to break into an impregnable laboratory at NASA's headquarters—past security checkpoints, an electronically-locked door with cipher security codes and camera-lined hallways—and help him steal the most precious objects in the world:the moon rocks. Mezrich has pored over thousands of pages of court records, FBI transcripts, and NASA documents, and has interviewed most of the participants in the crime to reconstruct the madcap story of genius, love, and duplicity all centered around an Ocean’s Eleven style heist that reads like a Hollywood thrill-ride. Mezrich uses his trademark narrative non-fiction style to tell the story, which basically means it reads like fiction. While his stories are extensively researched and are factual (though perhaps biased in some cases), the books are written in such a way that they are very engaging and easy to read. Sex on the Moon went by much more quickly than an average work of non-fiction; it was fascinating and the pages flew by. Thad Roberts is portrayed as a lost and wandering soul who finally found...
