The Myth behind the Overwhelmed Popularity of Social Networking Sites
Social networking sites (abbreviated as SNSs) have drawn a huge attention from the public, with their rapid growth in the past decade; browsing these sites have subconsciously become part of our daily routine and their equal powers to the mainstream media in feeding information and defining values is also well observed and fearsome. Perhaps the advanced technology in telecommunication such as prevailing of smart phones and broadband internet do serve as a primary element for their prosperity; however, if they were the only reasons for this phenomenon, the influences of the social networking sites wouldn’t have been so penetrating and attracting to all age groups that even created addictions to some users. Hence the underlying causes are more convoluted and worthy to analyze, and this paper is going to exam all the possible aspects behind the triumph of SNSs and explore the possible psychological linkages to mankind that are account for such frenzy. The fundamental reason for their massive attractiveness is that these websites provide their services at zero cost to the users and user friendly. Obviously cost has always been a big barrier that shuns away the interests and especially in the capitalism dominant countries like United States. When people are so obligated to pay for everything out of their own pockets, the term “free to use” does draw lots of attention and topple the traditional there-is-no-free-lunch values. Unlike other conventional sites that require memberships to access such as Netflix, SNSs provide platforms that are absolutely hassle-free and with no hidden fees. Users are charged only if they seek for premium services or extra features from the sites. Moreover, these sites are easy to get hands on, by just completing some simple steps with details instructions for each
