In on ‘’ the nNew gGreatest gGeneration, Wwhy Mmillennials Will Ssave Uus Aall’’ published in tTime Mmagazine by Joel Stein,. Joel Stein claims that millennials, the so called the new generation, are narcissistic, overconfident, entitled and lazy. Joel’s entitlements consists of studies to reinforce his arguments-.Joel examines three different reasons why our new generation is the way it is. First he mentions that is the internet and the social media he says being famous is the most important thing within millennials. Joel claims that apps such as Instagram and Facebook are making teenagers more and more self-obsessed and narcissistic. Second, he mentions that millennials are becoming less social and the internet is the villain “they are interacting all day but almost entirely through a screen ” Even though Joel’s statements consist of constant debasement within teenagers and young adults, Joel says what really surprised him is the positivism ‘’ here’s something even all the psychologists who fret over their narcissism studies agree about: millennials are nice. They have none of that David Letterman irony and Gen X ennui. "The positivism has surprised me . Joel’s conclusion is that he believes in the generationchildren.
I agree with Joel that millennials are progressive and positive, but however what he is saying about how millennials are lazy and fame-obsessed isn’t something I agree with. Being famous doesn’t necessarily mean you’re lazy or arrogant. You can still be humble and help the society in many different ways.
Kids today are as technologically connected as anyone on the world has ever been. They are passionate with communicating with their friends, so with the modern technologically it isn’t that hard. They have access to social medias like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and they are able to chat with their friends all over the world. Social networking has more than negative effects. I usually use Facebook to plan outings with my friends since it’s much easier to log into Facebook and just message your friends if I’m already on the computer. There are some minor negative effects that have taken place from social media interaction. However, the practicality of immediate communication that the sites have offered us has been a huge advance in technology. Not only have they allowed us nonstop contact with our associates and family, they allow us to form events with the click of a button and easy access to add all of our friends to join rather than using a postage system of writing letters to each and every friend you need to get in contact with.
In the text Joel continues the his thesis by saying that millennials are fame-obsessed and being famous is the number one concern within millennials ‘’They are fame-obsessed: three times as many middle school girls want to grow up to be a personal assistant to a famous person as want to be a Senator’’, but according to a new survey by an organization called the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) , health care companies are the most popular choices within millennials . This is a high qualified survey by Washington post with 1 million subscribers and one of the biggest daily newspapers in the United States. The survey says that 52% said ‘’ Being a good parent is one of the most important things in their lives, while 1% said ‘’ Becoming famous is one of the most important things in their lives .
This same unreasonable and irrational method of grouping and of drawing conclusions based on a single shared factor is practiced by the masses — with exceptions of course. We can all agree that judging people based on their race is wrong; we would unquestionably agree that an entire age group cannot be judged as a whole -– According to Neil Howe and William Strauss in their latest book called Millennials Rising they say millennials are good for the society ‘’ Millennials aren’t stupid, they are more know ledged than we would ever know, Eight in ten teenagers thinks being ‘’smart’’ is cool- He says . Millennials Rising is a book explaining how teenagers and young adults feel about being labeled as narcissistic and lazy.
To conclude I would like to add that what Joel is leaving out is that millennials are teenagers and young adults who are still figuring out what they want in their life and at the same time figuring out who they are. I bet that a lot of adults where really insecure in their teenage years. And judging and labeling them is not going to make them feel better. Millennials is an age group same as black is an ethnicity group. That means not each person is perfect, not everyone is going to be a lawyer or a journalist; it’s up to that person to decide themselves. I think millennials are a good cause for our society , seeing that health care companies are among the popular choices within that age group is just a new step to improving our society and helping those in need.
The sources I found were numerous, ranging from very poor to excellent. It took some hard work and dedication to receive the certain information required for the assignment. As a second alternative, I actively looked through my notes as well as the questions to see whether or not there was anything else that mattered in the grand scheme of things. There were certain factors that were easier to accomplish, like basic knowledge, individual thinking and so forth. To sum up, I found this assignment benefited me greatly for future subjects, for not only did I get to take part in an age group I’m in , I also learned some things that were unaware prior to receiving this assignment.
