Before formulating an opinion whether or not tenure is still necessary, it is important to evaluate the pros and cons of having tenure. Some benefits of tenure protect academic freedom, provide job security, and provide institutions with experienced professors. With those concepts in mind, the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the Association of American College and Universities (AAC&U) have agreed on a policy that defines professor’s academic freedom rights and privileges. Undergraduate enrollment is increasing with every passing year and there will be a need for professors for instruction. Some tenure critics say that tenured professors do not keep themselves abreast of trends with higher education affecting the quality …show more content…
Non-tenured professors have been known to censor themselves to insure that their actions do not reflect them in a negative way. Fear of being terminated indirectly because of one’s actions still exists within the academe. Carl Nelson (2009) states at an institution, were all the faculty are non-tenured, the president told all faculty members that they would be terminated if any of them spoke to the press regarding the controversy going on at that institution. If this faculty had tenure, then the institution’s president would not have had the power to instill that fear within the …show more content…
Tenured professors are well established professors within their department. They are highly knowledgeable and experienced teachers who have built a rapport through their years of service to the academe whereas non-tenured professors have yet to reach such accomplishments. When one has spent years cultivating the minds of undergraduates that experience assist in the reputation of the institution. Consider if one were to have heart surgery, one’s chose was between a cardiologist who has been practicing medicine for 20 years and one who just finished their residency. The argument presented in “Will the Web Kill Colleges?” discusses the changing of traditional colleges over online colleges by using the internet as the main source of contact and interaction. A few points are made in the article that stands out.
