...The Dave Matthews Band When I think of The Dave Matthews Band, I also think of their jazzy pop rock music that has helped them become a musical sensation. The band consists of jazz and classical musicians and of course, Dave Matthews. Their music and songs are very unique and have not been heard before the band came about. They have touched millions of people’s hearts, especially mine. The fact that they sing about real situations and real issues that are going on the world today is what makes them my favorite band. Whether I am happy, sad, or mad, The Dave Matthews Band’s album “Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King” always lifts my spirits and puts me in a better mood; their songs are inspirational. One of the songs that touch me the most is called “Funny the Way It Is”. This song is about the good and bad things going on in the world. The point being made is that even though many wonderful things are happening, bad things are occurring at the exact same time. “Funny the way it is, if you think about it/ One kid walks 10 miles to school, another's dropping out/ Funny the way it is, not right or wrong/ On a soldier's last breath, his baby's being born/ Funny the way it is, not right or wrong/ Somebody's broken heart become your favorite song/ Funny the way it is, if you think about it/ One kid walks 10 miles to school, another's dropping out” Not only does it discuss the fine times and poor times in life, but also how people take the privileges they have for granted. While kids...

...years of schooling I have always had the worst exsperience. I was teased all my years of elementry, middle school I was ignored, high school I was the "GEEK" who wore her mothers and sisters clothing. It seems like I have never had a break. I was never able to concentrate on school because I was just always worried about what everyone was saying about me. I was in and out of school, skipping class, hiding in bathrooms just to ignore the akward step of walking into a classroom. I never had anyone to talk to about these things, so I just kept everything inside of me. My mother "then", was not focused on us. She didnt wake us up in the mornings, she didnt get us ready for school, she wouldnt take us to school if we missed the bus. My second oldest sister did all of those things. If we missed the bus I remember having to run across the highway, and this is elementry and middle school days, to catch the bus before it went around the turn around. I never had someone forcing me to go to school or help me through my troubled years. I had to learn to coop on my own and get through things on my own. By the time I got into highschool i just didnt care anymore, I started hanging out with the wrong people doing things that I shouldnt have been doing having to switch schools countless times all eventually led me to just dropping out of high school. By this time, I was 18 and I was forced to live with my boyfriend and his family because of my mother kicking me out right when I turned 18. Previouslly...

...“Even if I hadn’t got the acid in my eyes-on my face (by accident: Rose-Ann had meant to ht Harry to be hurt by the acid- hit me, but Harry, who was, as I said, unexpected). Even if I hadn’t got the acid in my eyes, I’d never have seen my father again” (1). In the novel Sleena was mentioning how she got blind by accident. She sees what her mother had done to be a accident. Her tone towards this isn’t too upset as to be expected . I thought her tone would be more upset that she is upset because it is pretty hard when you’re mother had caused it. I think this shows how strong she is since she is past that matter. “I was excited, so happy. For the first time in my life of eighteen years, someone had talked, laughed, helped me. I was trembling for happiness” (26). In the novel Sleena was at the park where she met a man named Gordon. They began to chat and got comfortable in each other’s company. He left to get themselves both some food and Sleena was in thinking about how happy she is. Sleena’s voice is expressing how happy she is that she got to meet Gordon. I think it was very interesting how happy she got just because he began speaking to her. “No one, not even Mr.Faber had ever, I’m sured cared whether I drank at all, let alone what I cared to drink. It was fabulous. I would stuck my nail into my hand it hurt I was not dreaming”...

...Why I am Thankful What being thankful means to me is to see everything as a gift from God. I see my very life as a gift from God, and I am so thankful just because he lets me wake up every day. I think it is important to be humble, and remember all of the people that helped me get to where I am, whether it's my parents, my siblings, my close friends or even God. Being thankful is being able to not focus on the hardships of life, and instead acknowledging everything in my life that has made it better. I am thankful to God and my family, and my friends, and even my teachers for helping me improve my life. Being thankful to me is appreciating everything God has given me. ...Who Am I? My name is xxxxxxxxx and I am a woman originally born in the city of xxxxxx, xxxxx. I came to the United States at age five and I recently became xxx years old on my birthday, this past xxxx x, xxxx. As a woman of Hispanic origin, I am very rich in Latin and Central American Indian culture. I grew up with my mom and aunts speaking a derivative of Pig Latin. I have a Spanish style of cooking and mostly all my plates are xxxxxx dishes. I may have grown up in the states all my life, but I’m almost 100% rooted in Spanish customs. As a person, I identify myself as a child of God. Spiritually, I am always seeking knowledge and wisdom since I believe it comes from God. My faith is deeply rooted in my confession, that I am a spirit who will one day return to my maker. Holding such a belief has its advantages. For example, I generally do not abide by society’s norm of what I should be, or my role in life. I also believe that if I’m still here, there’s work to be done. I love to explore Biblical concepts and beliefs. As a mother I am an attentive soul. I’m always looking out for my children and their personal interest. I like to give them their space, but yet hold them accountable. I tend to be conservative with my children and do not try to push them beyond their limits. To me, being who we are and doing what we do, just as we choose whether to build a relationship with God, is a very personal matter. While most people do not like my parenting style, I think it’s worked...

...Why am I Here? The decision to further my education was made long before I completed high school; however, at the time I did not have the resources at my disposal to achieve my life goals. In conversations I had with individuals that I surrounded myself with I realized that furthering my education should be a top priority. The decision was made to join the armed services which had a huge impact on my life. Not only did the rigors of military life provide me with the discipline that I would need to succeed, but it would eventually avail a litany of resources thereby enabling me to pursue select long and short-term goals such as purchasing property and building a home. Over the years I’ve been motivated by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and by living vicariously through family, friends, and their college experience(s). Along comes the Great Recession; a period in our history that continues to impact every hard working American and the global society. The unfortunate events leading up to the recession and the subsequent implosion of the economy, if you will, forced me to seriously ponder my future. Why now? “Why not?” would be the easiest way to answer that question, but the more obvious answer is the fulfillment of my goals. You see I never gave up on them I just chose another route. I envision a better quality of life following successful completion of my degree program that will not only affect me but family and friends. I presume that more opportunities will present themselves...

...attending College? Ever since I have been attending college all I hear is all my professors ask, why we are attending college? I have thought about it really well. At first I was attending college to please my parents. Then I had a baby and as she is growing and time passes by I see that economically everything is going up. In reality I know why I am attending college. I am in college to improve my economic status, be an example for my children, and to achieve my life goal of being a petroleum engineer. As I was growing up, I seen my parents struggle in paying bills. At times we would have our light cut off and be running extension wires from our neighbor home to ours in order to manage, until we had the money for the bill. I also recall asking for things and my mother saying, Sorry sweaty we don’t have enough or we can’t afford it. Now that I am a father myself, I don’t want my children to feel the burden I felt just because my parents weren’t financially stable. Don’t get me wrong I had a wonderful child hood but there were moments that I wish I could have a certain object. I just would like to provide for my children and still have a little extra in my pocket just in case of any financial instability or purpose. The second reason I am attending college is to be a great example for my children. Neither my father nor mother attended College or graduated for High school. So far I am the only one who has graduated from high school and I want to be able to graduate from...

...appeals to me is like asking whether or not I want the recipe to the food I really like. Yes, the food still tastes good without knowing the details, but it makes it even more delicious when I know them, and I can understand why it tastes the way it does. The formalist approach to literary analysis gives you more insight to understanding the piece of literature as a whole. Similarly, when you eat something, such as a slice of pizza, you are eating many parts of a whole. Dough, cheese, marinara, and pepperonis are examples of these parts. Relatedly, these components of the literature could be things like historical context, author, and/or symbolism. Biting into that mouthwatering pizza would not be the same without all of those ingredients. It is better to understand where all the tastes are coming from. Knowing why the author writes the way he or she does or knowing how the setting affects the characters’ values can really make a difference in your ability to comprehend and break down all of the little details. It is these things that make reading more enjoyable, more so than just reading what is in front of me. With the reader response method, I can get much more meaning out of literature and sometimes even more meaning out of life. The formalist approach does not appeal to me because I do not just want to see something at face value. In short, the pizza would not taste the same without all of the different flavors, so why would I not find the recipe and figure out what makes...

...Volunteering has always held a special place in heart, for as long as I could remember. Helping others is a key aspect of my life and in my freshman year I realized it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. During my freshman year, I joined an organization that focused on bringing to light the negative effects of human trafficking to young girls and helping them overcome bullying. The goal was to help the girls be confident and know their worth. We gave presentations at local junior high schools and would get in groups and listen to the girls talk about their struggles. I volunteered in other places throughout the rest of my high school career, but mentoring younger girls was still on my heart. Entering my senior year of high...

You see while I was in high school my mother moved me around so much that I eventually attended three different high schools and dropped out during my last semester. I had moved around so much that I didn't really fit in having started a new school the last semester of senior year. Why didn't I tough it out? ...In this essay, I argue that popular culture strongly portrays and greatly determines a person’s experiences with friendship. In recent years, the popularity of social media platforms, such as Facebook, have risen portraying a new form of communication for friends and strangers alike. To say that the growing age of social media has impacted popular culture would be an understatement. Traditionally, friendships have been formed off of face-to-face interaction, and with the steady rise of social networking, those types of connections seem to be few and far between. In the article, Why I Am Not a Friend, Mariam Thalos expressed her concerns on the topic saying that “…social networking might make a wide range of face-to-face interactions obsolete,...

The second reason was that I wanted to get a better education more that high school. If I am the boss of the company, I won’t hire the people who just have high school diploma. My final reason is that I wanted to have college experience. I was glad that I can enter the college, so why I don’t take it and enjoy the real college’s life.
