The Quiet Man - A good stick, to beat the lovely lady.
Director John Ford, while mainly considered a director of Westerns, with the lead often being portrayed by his favorite actor and good friend, John Wayne. Ford directed or produced over 100 movies during his 59 year career, winning Best Director 4 times, including one for his favorite and most personal film, "The Quiet Man." It took Ford nearly 15 years to turn a short story by Maurice Walsh called "Green Rushes" into the movie "The Quiet Man." In 1933 "Green Rushes", was published in The Saturday Evening Post. Ford bought the rights 3 years later. However studios were reluctant to invest money in the movie. In 1945 John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara …show more content…
While John Wayne isn't as macho in this as in his past films, and he doesn't really stretch his acting abilities here. He is an effective counter to the fiery Maureen O'Hara. Despite playing Sean Thornton, John Wayne is still John Wayne. Though seldom considered an amazing actor, John Wayne was always a star. Just by walking on stage, the audience is drawn to him. Over John Wayne's 5 decade career he was nominated 3 times, and won one Oscar for Best Actor.
The "Quiet Man" is a great romantic comedy where an Irish American arrives in Ireland. Sean "Trooper" Thornton (John Wayne), an ex-boxer from Pittsburg, plans to settle down in Innisfree, where he was born. On the way to the village of Innisfree with Michaeleen Oge Flynn (Barry Fitzerald), Sean spies a beautiful scarlet haired woman tending her flock. He takes an interest in this unknown woman, and when he happens to see her at church the next day, he introduces himself to her. This is where we meet Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), a redhead with a fiery temper to …show more content…
But he finds himself in an argument with Will "Red" Danaher (Victor McLaglen), a Suitor and neighbor of the Widow Tillane and brother to Mary Kate. Mrs. Tillane, has heard of Will's bragging at the local pub and is angered by his presumptuous attitude, so she sells the land to Thornton. When Sean arrives at the cottage, he is surprised to find Mary Kate there, cleaning it to make up for her brothers behavior. Thornton easily slides into life at Innisfree, earning a glowing reputation as a peace loving and quiet man. Will Danaher, however, does not let go of a grudge. When Thornton attempts to arrange a courtship with Danaher's sister, Mary Kate, the fun begins. Thornton quickly learns that Ireland's charm includes some rules of courtship he considers old fashioned. He needs the consent of Will Danaher to marry Mary Kate, because their father is deceased. Sean and the local matchmaker/chaperone, Michaleen Flynn, visit formally to ask Will Danaher for permission to court Mary Kate. Danaher of course refuses and orders them out of his house. Mary Kate and Sean are devastated. Sean is at a loss for all these archaic social rules, and he takes out his anger on his horse, by taking off on wild country rides. Thornton's new friends Reverend Playfair (Arthur Shields), Flynn, and Father Lonergan (Ward Bond) craft a scheme to get Danaher to consenting to their marriage. They

What Makes Serial Killers Kill

...been many serial killers. There are many throughout the country and even many that have killed in West Virginia. Many psychologists have tried to study serial killers and answer why serial killers kill and also if serial killers suffer from some type of psychological disorder. Doing my research I find that this is a task that is very hard to do. It is difficult to determine possibly because many serial killers turn out to be the people who you would least likely suspect. In this paper I will take a look as to whether serial killers may suffer from psychopathy. I will also attempt to focus on one particular serial killer – Dennis Rader – BTK. Psychology Of A Killer Many psychologists believe that psychological disorders are the only reason for the killings while other psychologists believe that the reason is the environment that they are raised in and/or are currently in. Seeking help when a person is young, if sadistic or animal cruelty behavior is caught early by their caregiver, can reduce the factors of becoming a serial killer. There also may be factors with nature and nurture and how that may have affected them in the creation of a future serial killer. According to my research, the most successful serial killers are people who blend into society who possibly could be a neighbor or a trusted friend. The psychology of a kill and the method of the kill may be a factor also. Psychopathy is not only about the bad things that people do, but have their own set of personality...

Religous Poetry Research Paper

...Religious Poetry Research Paper Abstract King David was the author of Psalms 23: 1-6, and was revered throughout the bible as a great man that had great leadership qualities, and was admired by God. God himself referred to David as a man after his own heart. Throughout the Bible, there was only one man that held the heart of God; and that man was David. God described David as being a, “man after God’s own heart,” and gave the reason why He felt this way about David. “I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do” (Acts 13: 22, Life Application Study Bible). The poetic words of Psalms 23 was written by King David, illustrating God as our Shepherd who provides, leads, protects, and comforts. The Essence of Darwin

...Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, in Shrewsbury, England and died at the Down House in Kent on April 19, 1882. He was born to Robert and Susannah Darwin. Robert was a successful physician whose father, Erasmus Darwin, had also been a physician but had made his name as a poet of the natural world. Susannah Wedgwood came from a family of potters; her father, Josiah Wedgwood, had made a small fortune making high-quality pottery. Both sides of Darwin's family were liberal in their politics and indifferent in their religion. Darwin spent his childhood playing at The Mount, the Darwin home and estate in Shrewsbury. He was schooled at home by his sister Caroline until he was eight years old and Susannah died. He then spent a year at a day school and transferred to a boarding school, the Shrewsbury School, only a mile away from The Mount. There he studied, getting acceptable but unremarkable grades, until age sixteen, when his father sent him to the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. Darwin focused on collecting, hunting, and naturalizing instead of medicine. It was there that he first learned to study and collect beetles. The marine biologist Robert Grant took him under his wing. After two years, it was obvious that Darwin would not become a doctor, so with the help of his father Darwin transferred to the University of Cambridge to study for the clergy of the Anglican Church. There he became friends with the older botanist John Henslow. Soon after graduating...

Personality Reflection Paper

...Personality Reflection Paper Lisa Rutherford PSY 250 March 26, 2013 Harry Lowe Personality Reflection Paper I would define personalities as the different characteristics that make up and define every one as individuals. It is a composition of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors unique to every person. Some people have very interesting personalities, outgoing, happy go lucky, ready to get up and start their day. Then there are others which are just plain nonsocial, and do not want anything to do with others, just want to be quiet and to themselves. I am a very outgoing, bubbly, ready to enjoy life. I enjoy talking to people and will strike up a conversation just about anywhere, the Laundromat, the grocery or the gas station. Many people have told me I would be a great waitress because I have a bubbly personality. A friend of mine is very spiritual and has told me he has seen my spirit. It is very free and I am a good person inside. Good thing because I feel that way all the time. The unconscious part of my personality, yes, I see myself doing things as my parents have done or said with my own children. Expecting high goals from them, such as grades, and how they treat others. My personality does change with the environment around me. I notice that if everyone is quiet or laid back then I tend to do the same. This drives me crazy sometimes as I am a go getter and want to always go, go, and go. Before moving to Texas three weeks ago, I had a problem with neuroticism. I...

Immigrant Interview

...I chose to interview a female, in her thirties, that is from Ghana. She is married with two children and works in the mental health field doing research for the Veterans Association. The interview took place in an office setting and it was just the two of us present. The thing that I feel went well in the interview was that it felt more like a natural conversation than a formal interview. The atmosphere was quiet and we both seemed comfortable talking with each other. I cannot think of anything that went wrong during the interview and I feel power was distributed equally between myself and the person I chose to interview. Going into the interview I do not feel I had any preconceived notions about the person I chose to interview or her culture....

Friends and the Realities of an Adult Social Life

...the possible exception of Rachel during her waitressing years, the characters are rarely shown to work. Ross is the most unrealistically portrayed of them all: as a palaeontologist who also is a professor at New York University, and being a father sharing custody with an ex-wife it is difficult to understand how he has the time to socialize as much as the show depicts him too. “Friends” provides an unrealistic portrayal of how active Ross Geller’s social life is in comparison to his work and family commitments during the late 20th and early 21st century. Friends shows that most adults will frequently be able to engage in sexual intercourse regularly and with many different partners in the span of a few years. While Ross is typically the quiet, bookish friend of the show, and is certainly less crazed for sex than Joey, over the course of ten seasons the viewer sees Ross’ three divorces and development of several sexual relationships with new women more often than what many other adults are experiencing outside of television. In season 4, he meets Emily Waltham and runs off to a bed and breakfast in Vermont for a...

Social Workers Anonymous Team Analysis

...Social Workers Anonymous Team (SWAT) is a group that consisted of 7 members. We were different in many ways and laughed when it was acknowledged how different we are. I remember addressing the subject and saying, “wow that is so cool how different we are and we can still relate to one another and work together.” There were two Hispanic women, two individuals in their 30’s, a holistic woman who believed in all natural remedies, a woman who stands so strong for black power, an athletic girl, a mom, and a very quiet girl, and one man who laughed at some of the conversations he was stuck in. I like to believe that were a heterogeneous group because we all had very different personalities and different problems. “Jung and Sosik (1999) summarized...

Will identify each theory and also describe them in this paper. Also with each theory will explain how drug use and abuse. Talk about how each theory may have a support a strong relationship between drug use and crime. Will talk about two different articles that an individual was charged with a crime while under the influence of illicit substances. Psychological Theory Psychological theory focus primarily on the nature of individual experiences which might make one more susceptible to drug use and/or addiction. Based on the notion that addiction is a manifestation of a unique type of personality. More commonly, psychologists have pointed to an addictive personality. Recently, psychologists identify “personality characteristics” that tend to be associated with drug addiction. Jerome Jaffe suggested 3 personality features characteristic of marijuana users: Non-conventionality, open to new experiences, and lower rates of conventional achievement value. Basically, the psychological theory explains that drug use and abuse begins because of the unconscious motivations within all of us. We are not aware of these motivations, not even when they manifest themselves. So, there are unconscious conflicts and motivations that reside within us as well as our reactions to early events in our lives...

Unlike more common children he would build tall houses of cards and he hated playing soldier. (www.aip.org/history/einstein) At the age of twelve he was fascinated by a geometry book. At the age of fifteen in 1895 Albert quit high school disgusted by rote learning and martinet teachers, and followed his family to Italy where they moved their failing electro technical business. After half a year of wandering and loafing, he attended a congenial Swiss school. The next year he entered the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. Google May Just Be Making Us Stupid

...ENGL 1101/ F October 7, 2014 Google May Just Be Making Us Stupid The ability to perform research in just about every aspect of society. Thanks to modern technology a great deal of this research is readily available and right at our fingertips. In the world today many people have begun to rely on google as a primary means of finding this information. Because of this, it is thought that google may be “Making Us Stupid”. The article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid” by Nicholas Carr provides a quite reasonable argument to support this idea. “My mind isn’t going-so far as I can tell-but it’s changing. I’m not thinking the way I used to think.” (24), is a statement made by car concerning the effects of the internet on his own brain. This is to imply that due to abundant use of the internet for research purposes, it had started to have subtle effects on his thought process. The area he most noticed this change was in his ability to focus when reading. This was attributed the fact that as a writer, he used the internet quite frequently and abundantly for research. Before the internet came to be his saving grace, he would have had to rely on the archaic relics known as books and other forms of media to perform his research. Just due to the nature of this beast, it sometimes required hours of grueling page turning, which in addition to expanding one’s mind can also cause paper cuts. According to Carr, He is not the only one suffering with this dilemma. There...

...LEVEL 5 LEADERSHIP THE TRIUMPH OF HUMILITY AND FIERCE RESOLVE What catapults a company from merely good to truly great? A five-year research good to truly great? A five-year research project searched for the answer to that question, and its discoveries ought to change the way we think about leadership. The most powerfully transformative executives possess a paradoxical mixture pf personal humility and professional will. They are timid and ferocious. shy and fearless. They are rare -- and unstoppable. In 1971, a seemingly ordinary man named Darwin E. Smith was named chief executive of Kimberly-Clark, a stodgy old paper company whose stock had fallen 36% behind the general market during the previous 20 years. Smith, the company's mild-mannered in-house lawyer, wasn't so sure the board had made the right choice -- a feeling that was reinforced when a Kimberly-Clark director pulled him aside and reminded him that he lacked some of the qualifications for the position. But CEO he was, and CEO he remained for 20 years. What a 20 years it was. In that period, Smith created a stunning transformation at Kimberly-Clark, turning it into the leading consumer paper products company in the world. Under his stewardship, the company beat its rivals Scott Paper and Procter & Gamble. And in doing so, Kimberly-Clark generated cumulative stock returns that were 4.1 times greater than those of the general market, outperforming venerable companies such as Hewlett-Packard, 3M, Coca-Cola,...
