What personality qualities do you think characters/people must have to allow them to adapt, change, evolve and grow as individuals?

Nick’s father has firm beliefs. He believes in God and whatever that God said in the bible is true. He believes the world is flat and the day his young boy came and told him the world is round, he gave him a thrashing. He is not adaptable to the changing times. His son Nick was brilliant and went ahead to be a scientist but his father wanted him to stay at home and take care of their land.
Nicks father to be able to adapt and grow should first be tolerant and understanding. He should be open minded and instead of defending his stand, seek to understand where his son
