Title In “The Scarlet Ibis” and “My Brother’s Keeper” there are many common themes between both stories. Among them is responsibility, which is seen in similar yet different ways. Both Jamie and Brother were responsible for their siblings, but that responsibility sometimes began to feel like a burden. In “The Scarlet Ibis”, Brother was responsible for his younger brother, Doodle. At a very young age he was to take care of Doodle and take him wherever he went. Being that Doodle was born with some health conditions, he was unable to do many things, including walk. Meaning that Brother had to be extra responsible and help him out as much as possible. As Doodle grew up and gained strength little by little, there was more he wanted to do so their father came up with a solution to his immobility, as Brother tells the reader, “Daddy built him a go-cart and I had to pull him around...but then he started crying to be taken out into the yard and it ended up by my having to lug him wherever I went...Mama would call from wherever she was, ‘Take Doodle with you’...He was a burden in many ways” (Hurst 171). …show more content…
Furthermore, like Brother in “The Scarlet Ibis”, Jamie had to deal with his brother and was responsible for helping him and fixing his mistakes. The only difference being that Ted was Jamie’s older brother and a full grown adult. Ted made a lot of mistakes and always turned to Jamie to fix them and help him get out of those situations. Jamie loved his brother so he was always there to assist in any way possible. That love and sense of responsibility, however, could end up jeopardizing his future and endangering his values.
