We live in a place where we see lots of different background and cultures that shape the way we think as individuals and do art and design as individuals as well. I think that the African voice can help the people of Africa see what it means to be African even though we have those different backgrounds and cultures. The real challenge is finding out what the African voice is and what it means to Africans throughout and as an artist and designer to tackle these challenges with art and design in a way that makes sense to me and the other around.
Africa is a place that is normally generalized from the other places around the world as being poor, corrupt and full of poverty. Even though some of that is true due to the obvious problems in Africa the African voice can change this generalization of thinking with art and design that is diverse much like Africa.
Africa is a place with a huge amount of diversity and I think that diversity is the key to understanding and finding out what the African voice is and what the African voice can do for the better of this great continent and the people who have something to say about it through art and design.
Diversity, it means understanding that each individual is unique, and

Hip-Hop Culture Has Recreated New Cool Things for Young Consumer

...INTRODUCTION Culture of Hip-hop was born in 1970 and it keeps developing until today. Hip-hop basically has four kinds of forms which are DJing, Rapping, Graffiti, Break-dancing, and Beatboxing. However why music, in this case is Rapping, can build great influence to the listeners. Music is form of cultural expression that does not necessary experience race and other identity relationships. This aspect appeals to youth experiences because racial identities do not mean only simply one thing for them. Since identities of race are combination of multiple identities, such as national context, class, and even gender. This turns up in Hip-hop music which focuses on mixed identities to find local’s expression. Hip-hop music is no longer seen only as song to listen but has become a lifestyle to youth in modern era. They feel this music can represent them who are struggling to find meaning and identities in their society which most of them do, regardless of they are White, Black, Asian, etc. However, other kinds of Hip-hop culture like graffiti art and break dancing also have same influence like Hip-hop music. This condition makes business players who are outside of Hip-hop industry find opportunity to contract famous and successful Hip-hop music artist to commercialize their products. These companies use the mindset that has been built by the artist and indirectly put that image in the commodities which appeal to young consumers. The thesis of this paper is how Hip-hop cultures...

...Cool In my 39 years I have heard a lot of people talk or express what they think is cool (electronics, technology, music, movies, cars, and ECT.). However I have never once heard anyone talk about the coolest thing in the world which I will share with you further in this essay. Yes I find all these things to be cool but they are material things and meaningless in my opinion when it comes to what’s really cool which is motherhood. I feel that motherhood is cool because it’s so amazing how a woman could love you unconditionally no matter what you’ve done right or wrong. Motherhood is the most special and coolest thing that this world could ever have due to the fact that she will hold you in her bosom and kick your ass all at the same time while giving you all her love and strength. I’ve found that we have lost site on what is really cool because of the material things that we indulge in on a daily bases. Cool is motherhood for her love, support, tears, and fear the ass kicking’s and the understanding of our rights and wrongs in life. Motherhood is cool for the things that she teaches us past, present and the future to come. Cool is when your mother looks at you and you see the tears in her eyes because of the struggles she went through to provide a life for you that was better than her own. Material things are cool. However we need to stop and think hard about the things in our lives that are really cool, motherhood because without her we are nothing. Let’s embrace her for...

However, when taking a step back, it is possible that I never learned how to truly dress myself, and that all this time I have just thought I did. Cool argues that the majority of people go through life like this, with the illusion that they know how to dress themselves, when in reality, they don’t now the first thing about getting dressed. Cool Is Cool

...Cool is Cool To be cool or not to be cool… That is actually the issue, which almost all teenagers live by. Cool means pretty much the same as being “in” or to be popular. Some People Thinks it is cool smoking, other people thinks skateboarding is cool. But what is cool? Is it the way you act? The way you dress? The way you talks? There are a lot of opinions about that subject, what do you think is cool? The companies do a lot to make you think that their products are cool. They pay celebrities to wear their products and make commercials. It’s different what people do to look cool, some people read fashion magazines other peoples dress like their idols and the celebrities got stylists to dress them. The most people buy the popular brands and dress like celebrities or just using special words or slang in their sentences. Some walks on a special way or have a distinct style. Cause being cool is not just the way you dress, it is also your attitude and the way you act. But being cool is different from age to age. When you are a little child it’s about having the newest toy car or Barbie-doll. As a teenager it’s about wearing the right brands, having the newest cell phone and things like that. And when you grow up it’s about having the biggest car, eating on the right restaurants and having biggest house. All the companies that makes clothes today are doing a lot to get the people think it’s they’re product that is in right now, they make commercial and thinks like that, they...

Article Response: the Cool Hunt

...The Cool Hunt Youth culture is inter-reliant on the media and marketers. Previously, fashion trends were established by “the big couture houses”, whereupon consumers would try to emulate these styles, but over the past few decades, trends are now determined by consumers and then tracked by the designers. (The Cool Hunt). Using "coolhunters" allows a company to better accommodate its customers by providing more customized merchandise. It obviously is not a perfect tool to establish current trends, but it assists marketers in better understanding its consumers. By distinguishing specific regional, cultural, and age- and gender- related differences that develop the various needs, wants, demands, and desires of different target markets, companies are given the opportunity to provide what it is that these groups are seeking; providing guidelines for what to expect. “Coolhunting is not about the articulation of a coherent philosophy of cool. It’s just a collection of spontaneous observations and predictions that differ from one moment to the next and from one coolhunter to the next.” (The Cool Hunt). Businesses often produce merchandise that has the potential to excel, but because of insufficient research, this merchandise gets directed towards the wrong market. An example of this, given from The Cool Hunt, involves a representative for Reebok. The company’s DMX RXT model was unsuccessful in its originally placed women's department, but after consulting with male consumers, it...

The Merchants of Cool

...The Merchants of Cool 1. The “mook” is just a media construction that takes all of the wicked things in adolescent male teenagers and makes the “mook” attitude. A perfect example of a mook is all the people on the show “Jackass” they are all model mooks. A “midriff” however is a media construction that is taken from the sexual interest that all teenagers have. It is an attitude that girls take on where they think that all boys want are great bodies so they get one just to satisfy them. An example of a midriff is Britney Spears. She uses her body to sexually manipulate men and bring her into the limelight and ascend her career. These stereotypes are chosen to be labeled upon the teenagers today because there are some aspects in both of these stereotype’s that are true and they are easily taken and labeled onto them. 2. The shows “Dawson’s Creek” and “Beverley Hills, 90210” were popular but I don’t think they were popular because they were a reflection of teen life. I feel like they were popular because it was the life that many teenagers want to have. They want to have fun every day and do crazy things with hardly any consequence. Teenagers now aren’t as active as they are portrayed in the TV shows. They would much rather stay home and watch what is going on in other peoples fun lives then try and do the same thing as they see on TV. These TV shows are not a mirror to my live because I am not as interested in the thing that they are doing and that is the same for lots of...

Riverwalk Research Paper

...MARYSVILLE SHORELINE I was looking at the twenty acre site it was like a ghost town. What should go there I thought to myself. In my opinion I think a Dave and Busters, Great Wolf Lodge, a riverwalk and a drive in movie theater should go on the site. It would be cool to have a river walk. I think it would be cool because some people like to walk along the water. River walks are cool because people can walk along the river. You can also go fishing. The riverwalk would go along the the river and you would be able to go on the old dock where boats used to come and fuel up. The riverwalk would go along the whole edge of the site.Another thing I would put there is a Dave and Busters. Dave...

Rap Culture in Comparison to the Tone of Hughes and Brooks

...Rap Culture in Comparison to the Tone of Hughes and Brooks Today it is hard to get into a car and turn on the radio without hearing a song about money, sex, or fame. Modern day rap culture tries to force those three things on our population through their music and lyrics. They have changed many people’s perception of the perfect life through their tone, music, and lyrics. Many poems help express and can relate to the tone of the modern day rap culture. The tone in the poems, “Red Silk Stockings” by Langston Hughes, and “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks, can be tied to the tone in rap culture and express many modern American values. Rap culture in the twenty first century has exponentially grown and in turn has influenced daily American live. Today, everyone is exposed to this new rap culture that is developing everywhere. Rap culture started in about the 1970’s in New York City (Sullivan). In those days rap was about everyday life and race but has greatly change since then. Rap songs these days are all about sex, money, drugs, women, cars, and practically any material thing. Many songs talk about how rich the rappers are and the extravagant ways they live. Most songs in rap culture have poor grammar and language. These songs are crude and talk about women only as sex. The view points of modern day rappers are extremely clouded because of what they talk about and how they live. The tone of the Hughes and Brooks poems help to show the tone and expression of modern day rap culture...

The functionalist approach argues that the explanation for popular culture is our obsession with “mass entertainment” in terms of their social uses or their function in generating solidarity among individuals within large and anonymous communities. It also emphasizes how the symbols, rituals, and practices surrounding its production and consumption can bring people together as a social adhesive by generating a shared sense of social solidarity and reinforces the collective conscience.
