The Use of Propaganda in‘Animal Farm’

What is the meaning of propaganda? It means information that is spread widely to help some people or movements. In‘Animal Farm’,propaganda is a useful way for Napoleon and his partners to control animal’s thinking and achieve their aim. In my opinion, there are several types of propaganda in this book.

The first type of propaganda is using words, especially speeches and slogans. In chapter 1, old major’s original speech reinforces animal’s desire. ‘Only get rid of Man, and the produce of our labor would be our own. Almost overnight we could become rich and free.’(Pg. 28) After the speech, the song he sings which called ‘beasts of England’ is so strongly positive that all animals are excited. ‘They were so delighted with the song that they sang it right through five times in succession, and might have continued singing it all night if they had not been interrupted.’(Pg. 34) He identities human as enemy and propose the animals to against human. Almost all animals believe their life will be better and they will own rights. Napoleon also uses slogan to control the sheep. At first, the slogan is ‘Four legs good, two legs bad’, which is simple and easy to remember, so the sheep repeat the slogan all day and night. This kind of slogan seems to show the animals’ rights and help them make their dream come true; however, the slogan is meaningless and at the end of the book, pigs even alter the slogan to ‘Four legs good, two legs better!’. Animals’ thoughts are also followed to be changed. Besides,a powerful slogan which is "Napoleon is always right!" has a positive effect on the leaders’ control.

Moreover, Napoleon trains puppies and he uses these puppies to be his own army and police. ‘At this there was a terrible baying sound outside, and nine enormous dogs wearing brass-studded collars came bounding into the barn.They dashed straight for Snowball, who only sprang from
