...“I Can’t Help The Way I Feel” by John Isaacs The exhibition I chose is called “Medicine Now” which is being exhibited in Wellcome Collection. The exhibition is mainly demonstrating views of various artists and scientists about current common topics like obesity, genetics and how they describe the defects uniquely either with scientific explanations using video installations or creating huge objects and relating them to more abstract terms such as emotions and feelings. I think the most interesting piece in the entire exhibition was the one John Isaacs did, “I Can’t Help The Way I Feel”. The object is made from wax, polystyrene, steel and expanding foam, which are all covered in oil painting. The shape is to be considered as a human body with no head and arms but a fat giant torso, fat belly parts, and some parts that I can’t name which are coming out of the body in huge proportions. The size of the structure is enormous so that is the first thing you notice when you enter the room. The basic thing that comes up to mind is that this object is about obesity, and it is also referring to malaria. There are some defected skin areas on the back of the structure and also on the legs. If the object was just about obesity and malaria, I think it would be too obvious. But as I expected, the idea of all the sagging parts reflects also an abstract meaning. Isaacs wanted to describe how life sometimes feels so overwhelming. I think, he wanted to show what is also going on inside our...

...in some way. By making others feel excluded we boost our own egos making us feel as if we are the better group. Othering is a way in which we believe that our beliefs, our race and our life are better than another groups. We base this decision on one fact alone and that is the fact that they are different in some way from what we believe to be normal. In the poem The White House by Claude McKay it clearly tells us of the hatred he feels from the world around him because of the color of his skin. The line “Oh, I must keep my heart inviolate against the potent poison of your hate.” (McKay, n.d., line 13 and 14) This line tells us that he feels all this hate is coming from the people around him and that he views the world as being against him. It is very clear from this poem that McKay believes very strongly against the exclusion of Africa Americans and their rights. After reading the poem you get a sense of how very strongly he believed in equal rights for all. The line “But I posses the courage and the grace to bear my anger proudly and unbent.” (McKay, n.d. , line 3 and 4) I feel that this demonstrates his strength to preserver despite what he is going through and how angry he may be. In the line “Your door is shut against my tightened face.” (McKay, n.d., Line 1) you can feel his sense of not feeling as if he belongs. He feels as if he is an outsider looking in and observing. You can feel his desire and need to belong but that he is being shut out. I believe this way he has...

... A workplace should be a neutral environment where everyone feels welcome and comfortable to perform their job. However not all workplaces can be this simple and put together. Indie Software represents numerous workplaces that deal with this situation everyday. Whether you’re a new employee that is bringing something new or unknown to the majority or you’re an existing employee that is now surrounded by a new belief or value from a new employee it can be difficult in either situation but it really does not have to be and in this report we will learn how. Indie Software’s existing employees may be feeling uncomfortable because they have become so use to the same faces, the same beliefs, values, cultures and personalities. When someone becomes too comfortable and bit of change can be unsettling whether it is meant to be or not. The existing employees may feel uncomfortable because they’re not familiar with the way the new employees may act, speak or behave. Not everyone is educated enough to know that sexual orientation is a personal matter and every human being regardless of what they do behind closed doors should be treated the same, but unfortunately in this “not so perfect” world some people still get nervous or uncomfortable when faced with someone who is different from themselves. So Indies existing employees feel uneasy, uncertain and highly uncomfortable with the new employees. Some employees may feel nervous as they don’t want to be disrespectful or...

...able to connect biologically to them. I believe that forcing and expecting our children to strictly be with what they were born to be, just like society is so used to seeing gender identity, and they choose to act the opposite gender can be very damaging in many ways. The connection parents have with their children is one of the most important things while the child is growing up mainly focusing in their early years, and to know that as a parent you have the power to force your children to be what is expected of them isn’t the way to go. In this essay, I will be talking and giving a couple stories on how the discrimination of parents against their children’s gender identity can be damaging to them and in general about acceptance from parents about one’s gender roles. Children are technically still developing until they have reached their twenties, so with that being said I believe that gender roles are affected mainly by families. The children are not the ones to blame for what gender they choose to be. Remember children are still developing, most children get into gender identity as they grow up and get to know themselves. For example, a girl going through the stages of puberty might realize even though she was born with feminine body parts she may feel like a boy, and a boy going through puberty might also feel like a girl even though he was born with masculine body parts. This is where parents have a big influence on gender roles. I have a nephew who is ten years old, whom...

...theories as to why some behave one way and others another. One theory is that a person’s environment defines who they are; another theory is that a person can inherit certain traits, either way in the end all of the different theories contribute to who we are. There are different ways to which we can learn behaviors, like operant conditioning and classical conditioning. Operant conditioning is when a person has an experience that may have had an effect on them and they are reminded of that experience anytime that they are around something similar, this creates a behavior. Then there is classical conditioning which is a behavior that is installed in a person maybe from their childhood, like for instance a parent installing success, this is also a learned behavior. I will be interviewing a lady named Elizabeth who is close to my age, she is of the same gender, race, and comes from a similar background as me. I will interview her so that I can compare and contrast both of our answers, to see if we have the same similarities or if we are very different. I am a Caucasian, 28 year old female and she is a Caucasian, 25 year old female. I chose Elizabeth because she grew up somewhat like me, except she had a Father I did not. Elizabeth’s Mother left the home when she was 12 years old and she began to rebel quite a bit. My Mother was not there for me, so when I was a teenager I also rebelled. So we went through a lot of the same situations. When I got older I got married and had a family...

...but the world as a whole. Whether it’s the gap between the rich and the poor, or the world’s hunger, we as a human beings face dilemmas in our lives on a daily basis. I for one, being an African American man with children feel there’s some dilemmas that I face that are specific to my being an African American man. The one that I would say I find very challenging to deal with is the overall problem we have with the police brutality occurrences that continue to happen and plague this country. In this paper, I will discuss why the problem is challenging and why it’s creating ethical dilemmas for not only me, but for a lot of individuals that feel the way I feel. Police brutality has been an issue that has been around for as long as I have been on this earth. I myself have experienced some form of harassment from the police but never in the capacity that we have been witness to in recent years. Because of the explosion of smartphones and social media, police brutality has been brought to the forefront of what I feel is one of the most important ethical dilemmas that we face today, particularly in the African American community. Do we as a people say enough is enough, and fight back, or do we continue to stay the course and hope things change for the better? Now for myself, this is a difficult question to answer. I for one am tired of all of the brutality, but what really makes it worse is the fact that the occurrences are caught on camera and seem to be deliberate and excessive...

...Two Important People In My Life. I am an agnostic. This means that I have and open, undecided mind when it comes to religion. Two of the most important people in my life, my boyfriend, and my best friend, have very differing views. One, my boyfriend Lance, is an atheist. The other, my best friend Neal, is a Christian. While I am very much open to other ideas concerning spirituality, they are both very much decided. Both came to their decisions on their beliefs in a similar manner. Both were looking for answers. Lance says that, “I favor science over miracles.” With him it is what he can see, hear and feel that he believes in. Neal on the other hand “was looking for a way to be a better person, and [Christianity] just made sense.” They have both had positive experiences from their respective beliefs. Lance feels that with no “God” that he has responsibility and control over his life. Neal is proud of the work that he has done with and through his church. Being a former Sunday school teacher and volunteering with various community programs gave him a sense of giving back to other people. Though Lance feels that there are no negative drawbacks to his atheism, Neal feels there are some in being a Christian. He feels that, “There are a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings around Christians. Everyone seems to think we are judgmental, and uptight, but I am neither.” I believe him about this because Neal, along with Lance, feels that the people closest to them respect...

...being truthful with them, and accepting their individuality and idiosyncrasies. Respect can be shown through behavior and it can also be felt. We can act in ways which are considered respectful, yet we can also feel respect for someone and feel respected by someone. Because it is possible to act in ways that do not reflect how we really feel, the feeling of respect is more important than the behavior without the feeling. When the feeling is there, the behavior will naturally follow. | | Why It is Important Going back in time, respect played an important role in survival. If we think of a small tribe wandering in the desert we can imagine that a person not respected by anyone could be left behind and die. Such a person was considered to have no worth, no importance, no value to the group. This, I believe is the foundation of our psychological need to feel respected. Nowadays it seems much more possible to survive without being respected. Someone could, for example, inherit a large sum of money, have many servants and employees and have salesmen constantly calling on him and catering to him, yet not be respected in the least. Someone could also make a lot of money through having a particular talent which is valued, such as being able to dunk a basketball yet not really be respected, perhaps because of the way he treats others. Still, there is a value to respect which money can't buy. Though someone's life might not depend on it, there are times, many times in fact...

...Patricia Neu HRM-531 Human Capital Management Performance and Career Management The following will develop a performance and career management programs for the employees that I have selected for my team. I will plan work and set expectations, monitor the performance of my team, reward good performance, and rate the performance of my team in a systematic way. (www.opm.gov) I also feel it is important for my team to individually take ownership of their own career paths with direction and guidance from the company as to what is expected of them. I feel that performance management should be a continual, throughout the year process, not something that is touched on in a once a year meeting with the employee. That way, the company, the team, and the individual know where they stand, what needs to be improved, and what they are excelling at periodic intervals. Feedback will be given to the employee in the form of a narrative essay on a quarterly basis. A narrative essay is defined as, “…in writing, the rater describes an employee’s strengths, weaknesses, and potential.” (Cascio, Chapter 9) I feel that the narrative essay is the simplest, most effective way to deliver feedback. I will also be utilizing the behavioral checklist. I will make a list for all employees so that it is uniform and either I or another manager will easily be able to rate a declarative statement. This will be given to the employee at their individual quarterly meeting. To improve employee performance,...

...Football In Soicety – How does football make you feel? Football makes me feel like I am on top off the world. Everything about this beautiful game gives me a good feeling. If it’s playing the game or even if it’s watching the game. Playing the game is what I have always loved doing because I love the sport so much. From being a young boy kicking a ball around the playing fields too now playing in competive matches weeks in and weeks out. When I am playing the game I get a real buzz from it. Their is no better feeling in the world whenever you score a goal in a match. From the moment the ball leaves your feet and travels into the net. It could complete your day and make you feel so happy. Playing football always gives you something too look forward too. You always want too no when the next match is our when the next training session is. This gives you a good feel off exictment. The best way I enjoy football is having a kick about with your mates in a soical area. As we did in class last Monday whenever the whole class traveled to Bedford Park too have a kick about. Wakening up in the morning knowing you had a kick about with a bunch off lads instead off having to go to a lecture brightens up your morning, this makes you feel good. During the game when you are playing you have a huge smile on your face and its all about having so much fun. It makes you feel great. However, football can also make you feel angry and can be upsetting. Playing a competive game off football at the...

...SOC 202 February 5, 2014 Body Image In today’s society there are many different ways to exemplify one’s sexiness and even ways to hide it. Much of the time, the media portrays a woman as being sexy by wearing tight clothing or even no clothes and having an in-shape body with tan skin. The media, and most of society, also judge a woman’s attractiveness based on how skinny she is. When I began thinking about what society considers sexy in a woman, I realized how much “sexy” has changed over the years. It was very interesting to see the vast changes in what was considered a sexy look for a woman. As I looked at my body in the mirror, I only noticed a small amount of my body that I personally found to be sexy. My eyes are sexy because of their different color; green and yellow. My eyes are green and have a yellow sunburst around the pupil, which a lot of people do not have, so other people tend to comment on how pretty my eyes are which makes me feel attractive. Also, I feel that my long eyelashes further enhance the attractiveness of my eyes. When I smile I have dimples that appear on my face that I tend to find attractive. Throughout my life people have made nice comments about my dimples so this is one reason that I think they are sexy. I also have what society calls an “hour glass figure” that I find sexy on myself because I wouldn’t like to have a body that was just straight and had no curves to it. Every woman has a different body and different parts of the body...

... As I started reading this book, to be completely honest I wasn’t sure what to expect. I am not all that big on politics but I do know how I feel about what our government is trying to do and to be honest I am not a fan. I feel if we would just stop using as of this political party nonsensical thinking we would get so much more. Well in the book “The Liberty Amendments” written by Mark Levin he states how he feels about what is going on and it seems like him and I have a lot of the same views. Throughout this report I will list some examples of what I am talking about and compare them to how I feel about them. In the early parts of the book he mentions of manipulative Congress can be with all of the bills, laws, and benefits the try to pass “under the radar” I agree with him on most of that, they do try and pass a lot of bills through Congress but I don’t think they are under the radar. Everyone has access to pretty much anything the government tries to pass the problem is they do not even try to put them in terms we can understand. They put it in all technical terms that I’m not even sure they know what it means. I feel as if the Congress should have to try and put anything they try to pass in laments terms. In the upcoming pages of this paper I will explain to you some of the amendments of the constitution known as the Liberty Amendments that will hopefully help our country in its time of need during what is known as a convention process. I will let you know if I agree...
