Mystery, suspense, and surprise, three words describing the novel and movie of The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. There have been books better than movies, movies better than books, but The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin is definitely better as a book. What’s strange is that in the movie, it follows the phrase “it’s not what you have, it’s what you don’t have that counts (Raskin, p.43)” than the book. In the movie, lots of characters also disappeared, changed partners, and changed rolls. This proves that The Westing Game book and movie have many similarities and differences. What’s similar about the book and movie is that T.R. Wexler (Turtle Wexler) was the winner of the vast Westing fortune. Also at his “death”, Sandy gave Turtle a clue that helped her win the game. As well as that, Turtle did the same exact bet that led to the discovery of Sam Westings body. Even though there are a lot of similarities, there are still differences. The Westing Game also has lots of differences. Like how Grace calls Turtle the Other Child(book) instead of being nice(movie). Also Angela is the bomber(but Turtle takes the blame) in the book but in the movie, Sandy paid an unknown person to use a party popper to spook the heirs at Judge Ford’s party. As well as that, the movie puts Angela as someone engaged to Edgar Plum while in the book she is engaged to Denton Deere. This proves why The Westing Game book and movie are different from each other. The Westing Game has many similarities and differences that GLMS students have explored. A similarity is that Turtle Wexler was the one to find Sam Westings forth identity. They are also different because Angela’s only role in the movie is engaged while in the book she was the bomber.
