Essays and the Work Environment
Frustration was the perspective that I found in the “Jobbed” and “McDonald’s – We Do it all for you” essays. Each essay had at least one character that dealt with some degree of frustration. It was enough to affect their decision making. Andrew Griffin from the “Jobbed” essay was accused of stealing ball bearings. He quotes “Worked nine years for the man and he still don’t trust me.” Andrew packed his tools and left. Trust was his frustration. He could have stolen half the warehouse out the backdoor. He never went beyond his 30 minute lunch break. Jason Pratt and June Sanders is frustrated with the treatment they received working for McDonald’s. Jason is a retired griddle man. June worked on the fries. Jason’s frustration came from having no creativity on the job. He is treated as a machine. The beeps and bells from the griddle told him what to do. He is known as a legend with the other outlets in the area. Jason is the fastest griddle man around. On his last day, Jason took out the trash. Instead of coming back, he got into a car with his friends and drove off. He never came back. “I WOULD NEVER GO BACK TO McDONALD’S,” said Jason. June’s frustration is her schedule and unpaid training. June is a college student staying with family. She worked one day at McDonald’s. Her schedule was from 4p.m. to 10p.m.She was pleased with this schedule. June is paid for her first day of work. She received no pay for watching the orientation training films. The manager later changed her schedule from 4p.m.to 1a.m. After talking to her family, June did not go back to work. June said “I knew it wasn’t a job for me. But I probably would have tried to last it out – at least more than a day – if it wasn’t for the hours.”

Fiction and the Work Environment

...Fiction and the Work Environment Paper When reading a short story, poem, or even novel the author often attempts to provide the audience with some type of personal connection to a variety of components to the reading. An author may select very personable, hardworking, and unselfish characters to allow the audience to connect in some way with the main or subordinate characters; or the author may elect to provide a common type of setting to provide the readers an additional way to connect to the literature. Mona Simpson’s short story entitled “Coins” (Scheckner & Boyes 2008) is a story which provides many opportunities for the reader to make some type of personal connection by providing a story of an untraditional family setting. Simpson’s story provided a few important lessons that people need to keep in mind as they go about their daily lives. The short story sheds light to what should be important in a person’s life; what should be a priority, the lessons taught to children through hard work and love. After reading Simpson’s “Coins” I was face to face with the lessons that the story presented, forcing me to take a look at my priorities and family, thus allowing me a moment to reflect on what I truly cherish in my life, which is the love for my family and the importance of teaching my children the qualities of hard work in order to appreciate all that we have. The story of Lola, the housekeeper/nanny, was one that I was easy to make personal connections to and provided...

Hostile Work Environment

...Hostile Work Environment It’s about the Discrimination Not “The Sex” Dale Vineyard March 15, 2013 Organizational Behavior Article Review Keith Buelow Hostile work environment, from a historical prospective, has derived from a sexual harassment paradigm and theory of discrimination has tended to be viewed as linked to sexual conduct. The passage of Title VII of the Civil rights act has brought a struggle for courts to establish the framework to conceptualize and recognize the claims of sex discrimination. Hostile work environment has been rooted from the assumption that sexual harassment derives from desire or dominance. Title VII interprets hostile work environment as the presence of overt sexual conduct to demonstrate that an individual’s working conditions have been discriminatorily altered so as to create a hostile environment. These events have brought a broad contextual paradigm, which reflects a greater willingness by the courts to view the evidence offered in support of hostile work environments, without disaggregating evidence into artificially-constructed categories of sexual and non-sexual conduct. A broader contextual approach has brought an arising exclusive approach to hostile work environment, and as result of exposing an individual to severe or pervasive conduct of a sexual nature. This gives the courts an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which discrimination because...

Motivation in the Work Environment

...desire or need, rewards from achieved goals, and expectations on oneself or others (Business Dictionary.com). Different things motivate me in the workplace. Three of the biggest motivations that drive me include the need to help support my family financially, the challenges it gives me to better myself, and the rewards and benefits that result from doing a great job. Some days, only one of the factors motivates me, while on other days, it is a mixture of the factors. With the current economy and cost of living here in Hawaii, I feel the need more than ever to contribute to my family’s income. By being able to hold job that offers good benefits and security, I am able to appreciate my job, which in turn motivates me to work hard and produce quality work. Bainbridge’s definition of extrinsic motivation shows that this can be considered as an extrinsic type of motivation since the motivation comes from the outside and the rewards include good benefits and a paycheck (Bainbridge, Extrinsic Motivation). It can also be considered an intrinsic motivation because certain aspects of the job I do are very enjoyable. For example, when I am closing out a project, I get pleasure out of solving the problems that caused accounting errors within that project. My job also provides me with many different challenges. These challenges motivate me to either do better or to learn something new. These motivations come from inside and are considered internal motivators, or intrinsic motivation...

The Pressures of Work Environments

...Shana V. Mitchell Bus-309 Business Ethics Professor Garry Williams Mid-Term Report 3 November 2011 1. Describe how typical the attitudes that Sheehy reports appear to be in work environments you have experienced. -I have worked in many different types of environments and have experienced many different attitudes of my fellow co-workers. There are some who are messy, just talk about others for no reason; there were others who were mean with nasty attitudes very unpleasant and rude to customers. Being lazy was a very big issue because no one wanted to work together and help out, they only were to do just what they had to do and nothing more, but they would want to steal time by staying longer hours but doing nothing, and they would also steal supplies from the daycare to use at their homes. Sheehy’s co-workers were trying to get rid of their customers as fast as possible. 2. Explain the implications of the work ethic Sheehy describes for the future of American Business. -Because of the lack of respect and work ethics, employees will become unappreciative and unreliable, because they don’t care. Exploitation will occur when the employer start to give the employee long hours, and less pay which will cause the employees to rebel and not care about the importance of doing their job responsibly. 3. Explain whether it is more reasonable to expect workers, especially in a capitalist society, to be more devoted to their jobs, more concerned...

Collaboration Tools in Work Environment

...What collaboration tools have you used in your work environment or personal life? How have these information systems benefited you? At work I rely on email through Microsoft Outlook.  I prefer email above all other communication at work because I am able to go back and review and reference an email at any given time.  I know that there are instances where miscommunication can occur because the receiver is not able to "hear" the tone of the message nor can they "see" any body language that goes along with the message.  That being said, when at work, I keep my emails extremely professional, straight to the point.  I also will re-read my emails prior to sending that way I can ensure that my message will be received in the manner that I intended it to be understood.  After the phone conversation, I will then send the recipient an email just to briefly go over what had been discussed and agreed upon during the phone conversation. A few times a month our company will also use Skype to talk to our factory management team overseas.  This helps on several different levels.  This helps when we feel that email will not be able to convey the message as appropriately as a verbal contact would.  Having employees overseas that speak and write English as their second language, it is very easy to have miscommunication.  Speaking over Skype not only cuts the miscommunication down, but it also is a free service and neither party will have to pay in order to use....

Wireless Technology in a Work Environment

...Wireless Technologies and Networks in a Work Environment Edoardo Castillo BIS 221 February 5, 2015 Bill Fennell Wireless technologies and the use of networks have become a great part of our professional lives. We use networks to communicate and share ideas in a professional environment without having to be face-to-face with one another. Some of the advantages wireless technology has given us are mobility, flexibility, increased productivity, and reduced cost of manpower and material. These are just some of the advantages that wireless technology offers us, but we need to keep in mind that there are risks to this technology (Nascio.org, 2004). Although wireless technology has some significant benefits, it also has some disadvantages. Protecting confidential information within a company continues to be a concern for businesses all around the world. Another concern is the strength of a network and its ability to work at its full potential in broad range areas. Implementing a wireless technology like Wi-Fi will increase the productivity of any company or corporation. Wi-Fi will decrease the cost of materials and wires needed to link all of the workstations to a central network. Placing secure Wi-Fi points in and around offices for employees can significantly improve productivity within a period of work time. Rowe Results Oriented Work Environment

...Oriented Work Environment Introduction It’s a common belief that flexibility in the workplace is necessary this day in age. Implementing flexibility in the work environment is a difficult thing to do. This author says it very clear, “Making flexibility the “New Normal” in the American workplace is no simple task” (Seitel, 2009). However, everything is easier when an employee has support behind them and has the same belief as they do. Many statistics show that lack of flexibility is a proven issue that takes place within the entire organization. It will take everyone from senior leadership down to the department supervisors to acknowledge the issue and to be on board with the commitment to fix it. That is why utilizing ROWE in a corporation that values their employees is a positive step forward with enhancing employee morale. Management successfully supervising this program will outshine those that either are against the concept or have not learned fully what it is about or what it can do for an organization. What is ROWE? ROWE stands for Results Oriented Work Environment. “ROWE is a corporate-level organizational change aimed at altering the temporal structure of work, seeking to dismantle the clocks and calendars dictating when and where work is done, and the engrained cultural beliefs and practices around work time and face time as indicators of work commitment, productivity, and quality” (Moen, Kelly and Hill 2011). ROWE is not about where the employee works or how many...

Wireless Technologies and Networks in the Work Environment

...Wireless Technologies and Networks in the Work Environment Tablets, smartphones and laptops have given workers more flexibility in how they work and learn. Contributing to that flexibility is the ability to access the Web with these devices via wireless networks. No longer do people need to be in the same room – or even in the same country to collaborate and tackle a project. Answers to questions can be given instantly via a mobile call, conference, email or text message. The need for travel is reduced, and collaborators are accessible for longer periods throughout the day. In fact, the IAAP poll also showed that 86 percent of surveyed execs think that workers will be more accessible for collaboration in the future even while on vacation (International Association of Administrative Professionals: Office of The Future 2020 Computer: Smartphones Enabling Mobile Collaboration). Wireless communication has also made it much easier for Information Technology departments to install and maintain hardware in large organizations. Previously, connecting PCs, printers and other devices to the company network required running lengths of cable throughout the facility, often requiring access to sub-floor or ceiling spaces -- and a single bad wire could trigger hours of work trying to find the defect. Wireless networking is much easier to configure, simply requiring configured repeaters placed to extend the signal throughout the office. Wireless networks are also easy to access, as long...
