The A-Rod Problem

Published: August 5, 2013 New York Times
I started writing a column for The Times about a decade ago, and I endured a tough first few months. That was, in part, because, like anybody starting a new job, I wasn’t sure I could pull it off.
So, especially in the first few months, I had a self-preoccupied question on my mind: How am I doing? There was no noncrazy-making answer to that question. I was always looking for some ultimate validation, which, of course, can never come. But, after a little while, I settled into a routine and my focus shifted from my own performance to the actual subjects I was writing about. This shift from performance to subject may not have made the columns any better, but it sure did improve my psychic equilibrium.
That period was a lesson in the perils of self-preoccupation.
I think of this because of the news on Monday about Alex Rodriguez’s suspension from baseball through the 2014 season. Judging from the outside, the rest of us are pikers of self-preoccupation next to A-Rod. When you see him standing on deck or running off the field at the end of an inning, you see a man who seems to be manufacturing his own persona, disingenuously crafting a series of behaviors designed to look right.
When he gives a press conference, he doesn’t look like a man giving a press conference. He looks like a man giving a performance of giving a press conference. Even his off-the-field life — dating Madonna, partaking in soft-core kabbalah, dragging along his publicists and entourage — leaves the impression that he is always observing himself, and measuring to see if he lives up to the image of a superstar.
Rodriguez was a baseball prodigy from his earliest years. He batted an insane .505 his senior year in high school and had up to 100 scouts at every game. When he was drafted first over all by the Seattle Mariners, he hired the superagent Scott Boras, who damaged whatever chances Rodriguez had of become a normal human being.
Boras turned him into a corporate entity. In her book “A-Rod,” Selena Roberts reported that, in the middle of his first contract negotiations, Boras had Rodriguez read a statement accusing the Mariners of being “low class.” In other words, he was told to attack his first organization in order to squeeze a few dollars out of them. From the beginning, Rodriguez’s preoccupation was not with team, it was with self.
Rodriguez then retained a guru named Jim Fannin, who further isolated him from his teammates and who molded him according to a self-conscious, prefab self-help formula.
By the time Rodriguez became a free agent, he was the marketing facade of A-Rod Inc. When negotiating with the Mets, Rodriguez’s handlers asked for the use of a private jet, a special hotel suite when on the road and a personal marketing staff. By the time he reached the Texas Rangers, according to Roberts, a clubhouse attendant was required to put a dab of toothpaste on his toothbrush after every game.
Of course, this sort of egomaniacal behavior alienated him from his teammates, isolating him in the zone of his own self-concern. He was always the most talented player on the field but never a leader. He developed a reputation for caring more about personal stats than team wins.
Even when he tried to be a good teammate, that was little naturalness or spontaneity. Self-preoccupied people hit the right notes, but often so hard that they sound tinny. Self-preoccupation creates an ego that is at once overinflated, insatiable and overly sensitive. Self-preoccupation also seems to make it hard for supremely talented people like A-Rod to deal with their own talents.
One of the mysteries around Rodriguez is why the most supremely talented baseball player on the planet would risk his career to allegedly take performance-enhancing drugs?
My theory would be that self-preoccupied people have trouble seeing that their natural abilities come from outside themselves and can only be developed when directed toward something else outside themselves. Enclosed in self, they come to believe that their talents come from self, are the self. They have no outside criteria that tell them what their talents are for or when they are sufficient. Locked in a cycle of insecurity and attempted self-validation, their talents are never enough, and they end up devouring what they have been given.

As Rodriguez’s former manager, Joe Torre, once wrote, the really good hitter has to “concern himself with getting the job done, instead of how it looks. ... There’s a certain free-fall you have to go through when you commit yourself without a guarantee that it’s always gong to be good. ... Allow yourself to be embarrassed. Allow yourself to be vulnerable.”

At every step along the way, Rodriguez chased self-maximization, which ended up leading to his self-destruction.

...learners. Keeping up with technology and the latest trends will help teachers keep their students attention in learning. One tool that I like to use a lot and will use when I start teaching is the Cuisenaire rods. Cuisenaire rods are rods that come in ten different sizes and come in different colors including: white, red, green, purple, yellow, dark green, black, brown, blue, and orange. You can either provide them for all the students or you can have one set and let the children make their own, that way they can use them at home. Cuisenaire rods give the children a range of opportunity to learn in math in a hands -on approach, weather the subject be fractions, measurements, or multiplication. One way that you can teach your students using the Cuisenaire rods are when teaching fractions. Fractions are always tough for most students to understand and having this tool will give them different ways of learning fractions. For example most sixth graders know about fractions, so the first part of the lesson could be a review to get the students attention and see how much they know. Then you would want to let the students get used to the rods, and figure out what each color equals. You also want them to understand part and whole and then you can get into comparing all the rods. The students...

Strength of Materials

...the resisting area or σ = Force / Area. It is the expression of force per unit area to structural members that are subjected to external forces and/or induced forces. Stress is the lead to accurately describe and predict the elastic deformation of a body. Simple stress can be classified as normal stress, shear stress, and bearing stress. Normal stress develops when a force is applied perpendicular to the cross-sectional area of the material. If the force is going to pull the material, the stress is said to be tensile stress and compressive stress develops when the material is being compressed by two opposing forces. Shear stress is developed if the applied force is parallel to the resisting area. Example is the bolt that holds the tension rod in its anchor. Another condition of shearing is when we twist a bar along its longitudinal axis. This type of shearing is called torsion and covered in Chapter 3. Another type of simple stress is the bearing stress, it is the contact pressure between two bodies. Suspension bridges are good example of structures that carry these stresses. The weight of the vehicle is carried by the bridge deck and passes the force to the stringers (vertical cables), which in turn, supported by the main suspension cables. The suspension cables then transferred the force into bridge towers. Normal Stress Stress Stress is the expression of force applied to a unit area of surface. It is measured in psi (English unit) or in MPa (SI unit). Another unit of stress...

Alternative Energy

...emissions. The majority of electrical generation comes from conventional, fossil fuel run, power plants, with nuclear power being the leading alternative. But neither source is renewable or sustainable, furthermore, nuclear energy is beset with many problems. Alternative energy refers to energy sources which are not based on the burning of fossil fuels or the splitting of atoms. There are numerous reasons for supporting alternative energy development: lower air and water pollution, reduce land disruption through mining and drilling, reduce solid and hazardous waste production and greenhouse gas emission. Only renewable energy options offer long-term hope for sustainability. Several alternative energy options already exist, such as wind, solar, wave and geothermal. I believe that we have the technology today, to power the world sustainably. Presently, nuclear energy is responsible for approximately 16 percent of the world’s electricity; in the U.S. it is the second leading source of energy next to coal. Nuclear energy is often looked at as a cleaner alternative to burning fossil fuels due to the low amounts of greenhouse gases emitted by the power plants. But the use of nuclear technology is full of security and waste-disposal problems. Despite high security standards, it is technically impossible to build a plant with 100 percent security. The consequences of an accident, like that of a meltdown, would be absolutely devastating on mankind and nature. A meltdown occurs in a...

Negotiation Process

...Overview Rod Zemanek, the principal negotiator, designer and Project Manager of an Australian chemical engineering consultancy, (Predict Pty Ltd) has a warning for those wanting to do business in China: “Many Chinese see it as their patriotic duty to shoot down foreigners, so you can be like a clay pigeon at target practice.” Despite this, Rod Zemanek has been successful in China and is responsible for the design of many of the country’s modern breweries. He was invited to submit a proposal for a huge Guangdong brewery by Dr. Pasteur Lai, the son of a former Chinese minister of health and now an Australian citizen. Lai had many connections deep within the Chinese government, had done his homework on Rod Zemanek, and was able to report to the Chinese that Rod Zemanek was the premier brewery designer and builder in Australia. The Scene Rod Zemanek was initially cynical. “We get a lot of ‘tire kickers’ in this business—people who aren’t serious about a project but just want to test the waters,” he explained. Rod Zemanek sent the Chinese a questionnaire, asking for information about specifications, resources, brewery capacity, products they planned to produce, budget, and business plans. The response he received convinced him to head to China to discuss a potential deal to build Guangdong province’s largest brewery—a $20 million project. But, having heard from others about their China experiences, he decided to pitch only for the business in which his company had special technology...

The file photo shows workers busy at Bangladesh Steel Re-rolling Mills that produces high-grade steel. Shakhawat Hossain The country’s steel industry has been getting continuous investment boom due to steady demands. Steel manufacturers see no major negative impact on their industry as they believe the country’s economy will keep its impressive growth despite the global financial recession. They said the country with nearly six per cent growth in the last three years provides enough clues to consume higher production of mild steel rod to be generated by the big players with their proposed new investments. ‘The rod industry will not face major problem due to growing investment in the sector,’ said Bangladesh Steel Re-rolling Mills chairman Ali Hossain Akbar Ali. ‘Chance is slim even for the small players to become sick as the growing consumption rate of steel will remain in the coming years despite global financial recession,’ he told New Age. BSRM, producer of high-grade steel, makes up more than 25 per cent of the total demand. It is now on trial production in its newly installed 3,00,000-tonne plant, set up at a cost of over Tk 3.5 billion. It has also unveiled plans to invest another Tk 500 crore to raise its capacity to around one million tonnes within the next five years....

Q2) Consider the problem of finding a path in the grid shown below from the position s to the position g. A piece can move on the grid horizontally and vertically, one square at a time. No step may be made into a forbidden shaded area. 1. On the grid, number the nodes in the order in which they are removed from the frontier in a depth-first search from s to g, given that the order of the operators you will test is: up, left, right, then down. Assume there is a cycle check. 2. Number the nodes in order in which they are taken off the frontier for an A* search for the same graph. Manhattan distance should be used as the heuristic function. The Manhattan distance between two points is the distance in the x-direction plus the distance in the y-direction. It corresponds to the distance traveled along city streets arranged in a grid. For example, the Manhattan distance between g and s is 4. What is the path that is found? 3. Based on this experience, discuss which of the two algorithms is best suited for this problem. 4. Suppose that the graph extended infinitely in all directions. That is, there is no boundary, but s, g, and the forbidden area are in the same relative positions to each other. Which method would no longer find a path? Which would be...

Montessori Mathematics

...“Dr Maria Montessori took this idea that the human has a mathematical mind from a French philosopher Pascal and developed a revolutionary math learning material for children as young as 3 years old. Her mathematical materials allow the children to begin their mathematical journey from a concrete concept to abstract idea”. With reference to the above statement please discuss how these children utilize their mathematical mind as part of their natural progression, to reason, to calculate and estimate with these Montessori mathematical materials in conjunction with their aims and presentations? The child doesn’t learn mathematics only through Montessori, but he learns it from the day he was born or even before that. It is a known fact that an embryo can hear its mother. When a mother says ‘the baby kicked me 4 times’, the baby can understand this in her womb. After the baby is born people often tell him what day he was born or how many siblings he has, etc. The child’s day-to-day life and environment is connected with math. The child is born into a mathematic world where he has to adapt to it. The child needs math to sort and group objects within their environment. When the child enters the Montessori environment, he can already count without knowing the real meaning of the numbers (rote-counting). He counts with understanding of numbers and gradually learns arithmetic’s, geometry and algebra in the Montessori classroom. ‘The Mathematical Mind’ refers to the unique tendencies...

Steel Industries of Bangladesh

...STEEL INDUSTRIES OF BANGLADESH REPORT ON FOCUS The report “Bangladesh on its way of becoming self sufficient in rod production, export is also a possibility” by Shuvankar karmakar, that was analyzed here, was published in the Daily Prothom Alo, on 17th November, 2012. BACKGROUND Bangladesh Steel industry is emerging as one of the major industrial sectors of the country. It consists of small up to the largest scale of steel melting and re-rolling factories across the country that mostly produce deformed bar rod of different grade (40, 60, 500), angel, channel and coil for the construction industry. Though the history of Steel Industry is not older one but it can make a glorious future. Before 1971 Bangladesh did not have any steel mill and even after the liberation there were only a few steel factories in the country. In 1990s the actual development began in this sector through a revolution. During that period the building constructing agencies or developer companies came forward to build modern infrastructure. Then with the increasing demand, new investors started investing in steel or rod production. In 2012 we have almost 400 mills across the country including Dhaka, Chittagong. Although most of them are manual steel plants, 30 mills among them are automated. Many steel producing companies have gained reputation as a brand. Among them, BSRM, KSRM, Anwar Steel, AK steel, Rahim steel, Abul khayer Group are worth mentioning. Today the highest steel producing company is...

Epistobabble Warfare

...INTRODUCTION The article “Marketing: philosophy of science and “epistobabble warfare” is a commentary by the author Michel Rod published as a qualitative research in an International Journal, Vol. 12 Iss. 2, pp. 120- 129. Throughout the article Rod articulated his viewpoints on the variety of philosophies involved in legitimizing the science of marketing research and sought to establish his own perspective of what he actually believes marketing research should accomplish. This was stated in his thesis statement that: “Rather than argue one particular perspective, it is this paper’s central thesis that no one philosophical perspective does or should have a monopoly on what makes a useful contribution to our understanding of marketing phenomena. “ Consequently, what Rod proposes is that rather than trying to establish an allegiance to any one particular philosophy one should be free to research, understand and articulate all the questions and results that can ‘contribute meaningful information to the study of marketing phenomena’. In other words, whilst Rod understands that a philosophy might be needed to establish foundations of ontology and epistemology to determine the methodology (POEM): - * Type of questions or problem one attempts to answer in their research * The manner in which these questions should be posed…. * The best methodological approach to shed some light on the particular question(s) being posed or the phenomenon of interest being investigated...

Solar Panel Enhancement System

...------------------------------------------------- University of Ottawa School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) ELG 4913 Final Report Project Title: Solar Panel Enhancement System Executive Summary The project is to enhance the functionality of the solar panels. Our project is divided onto three main parts. Snow and dust can prevent the solar panels to receive direct sun light. This can decrease the amount of power received. First part is preventing high voltage by detecting high very high temperature and humidity. Second part is cleaning project that clean what’s blocking the light from the panel by reading power measurement. The last part is detecting damage by reading the power measurement coming from the panel and the battery. Home photovoltaic system must be cleaned regularly to achieve maximum efficiency. To achieve this, surface of the solar panels must be free from dust, sand, snow, and more. Dirty solar panels lower power generation efficiencies and the solution for this is to design and create a brush that can be activated to clean unwanted substance from the panel. Case Study Bill

...Case Study “Bill” Matthew Harmon Victor Valley College Many people are diagnosed every year with depression. Some that be in denial that they suffer from depression. In this present case study we have a client named Bill who is a 14-year-old white male. Bill has very poor attendance in school, and his physical appearance is very modest. While examining Bills characteristics and troubles I have found that his primary problem is that he suffers from some form of depression. Based upon Bills symptoms it is hypothesized that he suffers from Major Depressive Disorder. This disorder that bill suffers from causes you to be in a bad mood, not getting any pleasure from activities, and having no interest in anything that he does. Symptoms include sleeping and eating disorders, not being about to think or concentrate. It also can cause problems making decisions, and often thinking about suicide. These symptoms can be caused by biological factors, which are genetic, chemical, neurological and physiological factors that may affect or put Bill at risk for developing a mood disorder such as depression or in this case major depressive disorder. Bill’s parents both suffered from depression in which was perhaps genetically passed down to Bill due to genetic factors. Bill was molested by a stranger at six years old, this may have increased his willingness to participate in sodomy with his older brother and caused him to be sexual activity at an early age. He willingly had sodomy because...

Persuasive Essay Nuclear

...Technology has come a long way. It has brought the world to a new era, an era trusting electricity to power the nations that stretch across the globe. However, this hunger for energy has brought on problems as well. Our reliance on fossil fuels has led us to the issue of air pollution, which harms both the environment and our own personal health. Digging for these limited resources has become dangerous, to the point where accidents such as cave-ins drop down upon those mining for fuel. Lung disease from simply mining coal is responsible for the suffering of many diminished lives. Yet there is a solution, a solution that has already been implemented by modern countries, although on a small scale. Through the use of safe and nearly sustainable nuclear energy that can last hundreds of years, thousands of lives can be saved from the hazards of fossil fuels. The history of nuclear energy is relatively new. Though uranium was first discovered in 1789 by Martin Klaproth, it was not until the late 1930’s and early 40’s before experimentation with nuclear energy began. It was around this time that nuclear fission was discovered; to put into simple terms, nuclear fission is the process of splitting an atom’s nucleus, which results in the...

...plutonium, or thorium and placing them in the reactor, which start a chain reaction that can produce vast amounts of energy. Uranium is the element primarily used in reactors. The fission of a one atom can produce 10 million times the amount of energy that an atom can produce that is burned from coal. Uranium is an abundant element which is easily found and extracted. It often has to undergo a relatively cheap refining process, however, as the isotopes are found mixed in nature. Nuclear fission is also relatively clean, as there is no excess CO2 produced, as there is in the burning of coal and petroleum. It does, however, have is pollutants. The filtering rods used have to be changed every two years and the old rods disposed of. Because the rods are highly radioactive, their disposal must be dealt with meticulously. Currently most of the rods are shipped to yucca mountain . Despite the benefits of nuclear fission, the quest still continues for an even better...
